Fantastic news! Sony was really rolling back then because they didn't underestimate anyone. People joke about Sega and the DC now, but Sony took them very seriously. That's why they announced the console a year before it was even going to launch. And there were reports that they even rushed the launch to make sure that Sega couldn't gain any momentum against them.

Was that ever confirmed? I know that it was a theory that many kicked around. But they always said that it was due to a lack of components. And there were reports that both their investors and third party developers were concerned about it. The third party devs were concerned because their games got off to a slow start due to the lack of hardware availability.

It's just my guess. I mean, PS2s being sent to Iraq could have also been a factor.

I appreciate these gifs, but let me say that the ones in which only the top part of Kaz' face is inserted in the pic with the nose and mouth of the original still there: they all look weird and bad. Only the full Kaz face should be used. My two cents.

Since marketing/advertising is one of the main things that Sony needs to improve next-gen, I was thinking of the slogans for the next PlayStation and how it will obviously depend on how they market the new console to consumers.

What are your slogan ideas if they market it as:

- a powerful games console
- a living room "nerve center" / one box you need in the living room (netflix, media, games, connecting to mobile devices, video chat, etc.)

For the second category, I was thinking of an evolution of the "It only does everything" slogan from the PS3.

Maybe Playstation: Play Everything? It denotes that the new PS is the only thing you need in the living room because it plays everything (all forms of media) and could have integration with Google TV/Play.

What do you guys think?

Live in your world. Play in ours.

Keep that slogan going on forever, it has worked very well for the PS1/PS2 era.

Exactly. They'll never do better than that. It's perfect. And it made even more sense for the PS3 than on the PS2. Mostly because Sony started developing a lot of immersive games this generation.

You and I seem to agree very closely on how Sony can land back on their feet. I like that. :)

If there's one thing I'm really hoping for, it's a return to the "What is that futuristic device?" branding and marketing. PSX and PS2 felt like high technology all the way down to their boot sounds. PS3 is a great system in many ways, but it feels more like "So premium, so elegant." compared to previous generations. The violin bootup sound especially drives this home.

I want PS4 to look and feel like the future.

I know what you mean, but how cool would it be to have the boot up be like a remixed futurey variant of the original PS1 bootup?

I agree with you one fucking hundred percent. The PS3 looked the best out of the three consoles, but it lacked that majestic feeling the PS2 had. The startup screen still gives me the chills to this day, PS1 also with the thumping bass and high pitched tones at the end.

I dreamt up an idea for a gif on my way from school today xD

Take the scene from The Mask where the Mafia boss has Dorian laying on the ground with a golf ball in his mouth, and put Ballmer's face on the boss and Mattrick's face on Dorian.

While swinging the golf club over Mattrick's face he'll say: "I thought you said they were gonna let us announce first..."

Cut to the scene where the Mask asks "Did you miss me?" And take the part where he says "I GUESS NOT!" ',:D and edit Kaz's eyes/nose in.

Cut back to Ballmer and Mattrick getting the (Xbox branded) golf ball whacked off his mouth, and then cut to the Cuban Pete maraca scene and have Kaz do the dance while the "Feb 20th" Ad fades in.
