The announcement trailer is bringing back a flood of nostalgia from the infamous Killzone 2 trailer to the Metal Gear Solid 2 reveal. I'm literally pumped and haven't been this excited over anything in a while.

Taking the day off from work just for this Playstation Meeting.

I wonder what the OS would look like. I know it won't be XMB but I do hope it'll be as simple as that minus the ticker and the unnecessary shortcuts for apps you don't have installed like cough Amazon Instant Video.

if the os immediately was there the instant that gif ends, then yeah that startup would be amazing

i think, rather, it would stay at the PS logo for a while while loading, or go to a second black screen

PS4 startup screen.

Yeah it's a quickie.

With PS1 sound kicking in..

Don't forget that Kaz Hirai isn't the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment anymore, Andrew House is.
So he won't be the host, just like Stringer wasn't the host of Playstation conferences in the past :D
Still of course PS4 is a very important product for the whole company and Kaz is still strictly linked to the gaming side of it, so he will be there making his speech about PS4, probably talking and introducing the biggest innovations that it brings.

Screw innovations.

Give me pure power.

No bullshit like copying Nintendo's WiiU or making Move one of its features.

Just a system that can deliver ridiculously great looking games without going into the PC price range.

Right, as long as they look good, who cares about trivial stuff as gameplay, innovation etc?

No. The MoveShock will be glorious and you will enjoy it.

This will kill them.

Gimicks wasnt Sony's expertise anyway.

Look how well these this things got supported by both devs and gamers:

Sixaxis
PS Eye
Move
Vita's Front and Back touch, front and rear cameras.

And look how the PS1 and 2 did without them. Except for Eye ofcourse.

Gimmicks aren't innovation.

X-Box Live was innovation. That was a good thing to force the other console manufacturers into online. Shoulders buttons were an innovation. Rumble was an innovation.

Many innovations are what have transformed this industry into the things you like today, more often than not. More innovations, therefore, are needed to continue its evolution.

Do you have any idea how much shit Sony has in R&D and patented? The problem with Sony is that they don't pull triggers on innovations they've come up with till someone else has proven there's a market for them. Being conservative is not a good thing for this company. Microsoft will kill a conservative company that takes them on directly.

You're right. The PS1 and PS2 weren't innovative at all. Nice list of failures, BTW. I'm sure the reason devs are avoiding the Vita is the inclusion of front and back touch panels.

Why hasnt' SONY Santa Monica formed a full second game development team by now. They are creators of the biggest SCE property in God of War. Where is their B team creating something new. I know they have assistance production duties with other developers, but still.

I'm pretty sure they have.

Motion controls are innovation, the Wii's was just too inaccurate for it to have been of much real use.

Sony Santa Monica is expanding. They have a second team working on something else that's not God of War: Ascension.

Ummm...I remember playing quite a few PS2 games online.

So do you think they might show the actual hardware or just talk about their philosophy when it comes to next gen and have people wait until E3 for the hardware and games?

I think it will be a full, all weapons out, presentation. They will show the prototype of the actual console, they will announce the general specs but not going too deeply into the details also because a few things are not final and for competitive reasons (just like they did with the Vita/NGP). There will be first party gameplay demos showcasing key new features in the controller, they will announce new features and integrated services for the Playstation Network. Probably we'll know about their plans about Gaikai. Third parties will be about tech demos (UE4, Agnis Philosophy, Fox Engine running MGS5), promising their support showing a few trailers and then cu to E3. They will announce a release this year but no price.

This is pretty much what I expect :p

I don't want to get too excited, but I can't really think of anything else it would be. I'm actively trying to think of other things just to keep my hopes subdued.

That being said, this may be a great move by sony. Why wait till later in the year. If you are going to show your new console, do it on your own time. Build your own hype. Slam e3 with games on your new console, and remind people why playstation was the place to go to for games. Interesting aggressive approach by sony (if this is in fact about their new console). Sony going after it

Uh, you think that I think that Live or shoulder buttons aren't innovations? Motion control remains a gimmick. I put more value in OR than I do in Move.

The beginning of that trailer would be an epic startup screen. imagine if that sound was a low frequency effect so every time you turn it on its like a thump in the chest. LFE startup ftw.

Yes, PS2 online was exactly the same as Live. I forget.

And what I'm saying is that people consistently use the term 'gimmick' for things that they don't like and 'innovation' for things that they do, but neglect that for every 'gimmick' they experience, someone else experiences an 'innovation.' That is, not everything on a console needs to be based entirely on you, nor should it be. Nor should people discount 'innovations' when those things may positively impact their own experiences, even if they cannot currently think of an innovation they want or need at the moment.

Sony revealing first tells me a couple of things:

- The specs for both consoles are pretty much locked-in.
- Sony is very confident on how the Orbis will match-up against Durango.
- Sony is determined not to make the same mistake in letting MS go first, both in reveal and launch. They intend to start this generation on the offensive.

I like this shit. More competitive.
