Sorry, not finished. Will try to finish later...
MLB 14: The Show
Platforms: PS4 (previously released for PS3, PSV)
Format: Digital and retail
Crossbuy: Haha. No, not bloodly likely.
Price: Estimated at $59.99
This is the latest annual update to Sony's marquee American baseball simulation. Compared to the PS3 and PSV versions, the PS4 version boasts improved graphical fidelity, pay-to-play online, and a later release date. A quick check of review aggregator Metacritic shows that this year's PS3 version has been less well-received than the versions from the previous two years. Because Take-Two's 2K Sports division no longer produces a competitor (i.e. MLB 2K), I believe this is the only baseball simulation available this year.
Sportsfriends
Platforms: PS4, PS3
Format: Digital only
Crossbuy: Yes, with caveat. See [1].
Price: $14.99
This is a collection of wacky sports games, and I use that term sports loosely. While I haven't played it, the trailers have a fun vibe to them, as if someone finally brought over some nutty Wii-style minigames to the PlayStation world. The developer is Die Gute Fabrik, whose game Where Is My Heart? should be played by everyone. Sportsfriends has a retro-style pixel style to the graphics, as if they came straight out of the era just after the Atari 2600 (simple, bright) but before the NES (messier, duller). Looks like it can use PS Move controller, so keep that in mind too. Oh, and it grew out of a Kickstarter campaign, which you can check out
here. (That page includes links to websites for each of these games with more details.)
Stick it to the Man
Platforms: PS4 (previously released for PS3, PSV)
Format: Digital
Crossbuy: No. See [2].
Price: Estimated at $12.99 (same as PS3)
As if it weren't bad enough to live in a 2D world of hand-drawn art, Ray wakes up one day to find he now has a spaghetti arm sticking out of his head with which he can manipulate the things around him. Well, ok, maybe that's not so bad as new superpowers go, but it will likely diminish your chances with the ladies. Except that you can now read other people's minds! That's good too, right? Yeah, but then you are framed for a crime you didn't commit and have to use these new powers to get yourself out of that sticky situation. The PS3 version has five stars out of 66 ratings on the PS Store, so that seems like a decent recommendation. It's also going for $12.99 on the PS3 and PSV.
Titan Attacks!
Platforms: PS4, PS3, PSV
Format: Digital
Crossbuy: Hell yeah.
Price: Estimated at $9.99 (same as PC on Steam)
Do you remember Revenge of the Titans, that great tower defense game from Puppy Games with the shaded pixelart style and awesome chiptunes soundtrack based on classical music? Well, fine, screw you. It was a fun game. And they've now taken that same style and applied it to what appears to be a riff on the Space Invaders shooter style. Uh -- maybe you're too young for that. Gorf? Galaxian? Galaga? Galaga '88? Raiden? Fine, bad stuff comes down from the top of the screen and tries to get to you at the bottom. Shoot to live. Same idea here, but with modern accoutrements like stereo sound and HD-rendered fat pixels.
Bound by Flame
Platforms: PS3, PS4
Format: Digital on 6 May 2014, then retail on 9 May 2014
Crossbuy: Hell no.
Price: Estimated PS4 is $49.99, PS3 is $39.99
This is a new action RPG set in a fantasy world where something bad is happening and only you can set it right. The gameplay roughly looks like what I remember of the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance games, and that would be delightful because those were
awesome. I haven't been following this game's development, but maybe someone else can chime in with ideas.
Borderlands 2
Platforms: PSV (previously released on PS3)
Format: Confusing. See [3].
Crossbuy: Hell no. But does have cross-save with PS3.
Price: Estimated at $39.99
So, like many of you, I bought Borderlands 2 digitally when it came out on the PS3. Fun fun fun! Then I got sucked into other games, and forgot about it. Bad bad bad. Then they announced this for the PSV, with cross-save! Fun fun fun again! So, I'll likely go back to loot-hunting and leveling up my character while shooting my way through lots of steampunk-ish lands. This game is free with a lifetime membership to the NRA. See [4].
Broken Sword 5: The Serpent's Curse
Platforms: PSV
Format: Digital only
Crossbuy: N/A
Price: Estimated at $19.99 but possibly as high as $24.99
The fifth game in the point-and-click mystery/adventure series, starring normal-guy George and sassy gal Nico. This is yet another Kickstarted game, which originally came out on other platforms, and it even came out in EU-land already. You can find several of the previous games in the series on other platforms (like iOS and Android) for a couple of dollars, so you can see if you would be interested in this.
Football Manager Classic 2014
Platforms: PSV
Format: Digital only
Crossbuy: N/A
Price: ...............
[1] "As a special treat, if you purchase Sportsfriends on PS3 you will also be entitled to download the PS4 version for free."
[2] "The game will not be Cross-Buy with the other versions, but this will be reflected in the pricing," a representative from Ripstone told Eurogamer. "We'll be releasing pricing & promotional discount details closer to launch."
[3] Only available with special PSV hardware bundles this week. Then full release next week. At least, I think that's what happening.
[4] Not really, but what a missed opportunity.
