Playstation Portal reviews

GoldenEye98

posts news as their odd job
Just get a Steam Deck on the cheap for a little extra.

"Little extra" ignores the fact of having to spend on multiple game libraries...

If you are mainly invested in the PS ecosystem in terms of games you don't have to double dip with this.

More power to those of you who purchase this thing, but this shit is just Sony being Sony. They just love to half ass some shit (hardware or supportwise) and then later blame it on the market. This will be the first hardware flop and i fear PSVR2 may not be too far behind.

IMO they were probably better of making a BackBone style Dual Sense that was compatible with a variety of cellphones and tablets and that could also snap together like a Switch controller and be used directly with PS5. Remote play is what, 90% software anyway, just about any hardware can be used.

But unfortunately, Sony cant really get there shit together when it comes to the various departments/subsidiaries or whatever working together. Fuckers have too many things that dont work together seemlessly...and not all shit needs to be branded Playstation to do so.

Everything can revolve around Playstation, without being labeled Playstation. Their TV and audio components at the bare minimum should work flawlessly with Playstation.
At least if this thing flops as so many market analysts here are predicting this portal doesnt take extra support and wont just up and be abandoned

For those of us looking forward to this it seems to really fit the niche we are looking for

A complete waste of resources.
Is it? this will be the same team who worked on other PlayStation hardware, it's good they are still working on things or should they just work on more DualSense colours or something? This wont have cost a lot in R&D and they will be making a profit on every single one sold so resources well spent in my opinion.

I am talking about the materials required to build such a useless device. Being hacked will be the only redemption for this thing down the road.

Also, one of the benefits of a streaming only device, unlike Vita/PSP, even if they do drop support it will still work, it doesnt rely on developers making games specifically for it and the chances are it will work on PS6 unless that has vastly different controllers.

Anyone downplaying this device clearly doesn't have kids who hog the television with Spongebob.

And sure, remote play on a phone, but I need my phone, the interface is clunky, syncing and unsyncing controllers is so bad that you may as well buy a controller just for remote, and at that point, you're already in for a penny, so.

I'll probably get this.

People forget that this thing can do remoteplay which is present since the PS3 era on PS consoles. It will always work in the future and Sony is able to add direct cloud streaming from the device itself in the future.

They don't have to make specific games for this device.

Nice, he talks about no input lag, just a drop of about an fps but doesn’t affect gameplay at all. Better than any remote play he’s used.

The major downside imo is the charging is at the bottom instead of the top. Sony needs to stop that shit.

Can’t wait to get mine on Wednesday

What is with all these comments “it doesn’t do this, it doesn’t do that”

If you actually read what Sony said it will do, it does all those things.

As others have said, this is a Dads dream device with kids hogging the TV and you having to sit on your phone and bitch about products you’ll never like on GAF. Now I can actually play games and not listen to the whiny bitches on here 😂

That 'may' be because they could have a dock in the works?

But yes, he talks about actual use case scenarios, all sounds good to me and its from a Gaming channel. I think personally what I dont like about the first batch of reviews is they are mainly from 'tech' channels rather than actual gaming channels, I mean, they may say exactly the same, but I prefer to hear from people that would actually use this rather than someone like 'Adam Savage's Tested'.

I don't understand who the market for this is.

A Switch is the perfect remote console, you can play it anywhere, i.e. the whole point of a remote console.

For this product, you have to have another console (PS5), turned on and be on the same network as it................... wtf?

Who is buying this? Someone who wants to play while someone else watches TV?

Yeah, someone who wants to play while someone watches TV. Someone wants to play while their kids are going to sleep. Someone wants to play but their wife has her girlfriends over for drinks.

Is it that hard to imagine people lead different lives?

You ever been in a situation where your gf is watching one of her soaps or temptation Island or some nonsense and you rather feel like playing a videogame?

Or when your kids are watching Paw Patrol?
Girlfriend? Kids? What mysterious concepts are these?

Joking aside, i get it from that point of view, however if this is it's only USP it doesn't seem like enough to me to warrent the price.

Not something for me, but i do want it to do well, but seems like an extremely small market device. However, Sony likely sees something i dont.

Main positive from it is that Sony cant really drop the ball on ongoing support for it as it requires very little support other than software updates that are likely tied in with the remote play app or server side of things.

Edit: didnt mean to basically reiterate what you said, but seems we are in line, lol

The more I read about this device, the more it perplexes me. What does airplane mode service on a tablet whose sole purpose is to stay connected to a PS5 to be operational.
Because it is a WiFi capable device that will keep looking for networks when disconnected from one and, because of that, can interfere with other devices.

So,uh, this doesn't even come with a charging dock?

Good guy Sony lauching a separate charging dock next year.

Alright, I just have to know because I'm seeing a lot of "I can play this when my wife/kids are hogging the TV". How many of you own a single TV? No judgment, I'm genuinely asking because practically everyone I know has multiple TVs at this point.

Owners of the Logitech G Cloud can easily downplay this device.

Look at the bright side, there's already screen protectors and carrying cases available on Amazon 😁

edit : and skins/silicone covers/grips

Man, remote play is so mid to me. Probably the worst way to experience a Playstation game.

I can understand the use case, but I don't think remote play is ready for a device like this. I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed by this device on release.

No, but my Switch did.

And to be honest I like to display my devices. Needing to have this on a protective case or laying flat, meh.

Except this is like a pup pad you can only use in Paw Patrol HQ with 4 hours battery life and 200mb wifi.

I may get it.

There are many use cases, I don't even have a wife or kids and have two TVs. But, I only have one console. Instead of paying for a second ps5 and constantly syncing saves, it's an OK solution for when I'm too lazy to change rooms. It's nice to play games in bed once in a while.

Yeah, it’s strange. I have kids and my PlayStation Portal is a 42 inch LG OLED installed in my office. If I really want to escape my family I can play there.

I have no idea what is going on here, but if you watch from around 9 mins onwards I think the PlayStation Portal must smell a lot?

Yea thanks for posting an honest review. It turns out it's exactly 💯 % what I thought it was and I should have mine within a couple days.

I've read through this thread mostly and now I'll probably watch the verge for entertainment purposes.

Since I'm someone who doesn't take up the main TV when the wife and kids are around this looks perfect.

I've played through entire games from start to finish using remote play with different devices successfully. After I got fiber I should say.
