Just tried a few alpha effects with semi transparent stuff, but unfortunately it just sets it opaque if >50% opacity and fully transparent for <50%. Perhaps that was expecting too much though!

EDIT: Just tried transparent start screen, this makes me think that allowing transparent backgrounds was actually an accident on Sony's part, I hope they don't remove it...

EDIT2Also, I love the way that transparent backgrounds turn into silhouettes when you swipe to a different page!)

Nice to see you are able to change the wallpaper at the launch of the system. I remember when I bought my launch PSP there was no way to change the wallpaper to your own image, but eventually it was possible with custom firmware, then later on Sony implemented it.

Still debating if a Vita is worth it just for the new Lumines. I was playing the first one on my PSP today and it is looking a little dated. Funny, because I remember being so blown away with the PSP screen and Lumines a few years ago. I think the screen on my Galaxy S spoiled me a bit. Maybe I can find one to try in store.

Some observations:

PNG transparency seems to be 1-bit - on or off - so you can't do partial transparency and you won't get nice smooth edges on things.

If you want to trip balls, set a transparent PNG as your home screen and then unlock your Vita. CRAZY STUFF HAPPENS.

PNGs don't seem to be recompressed like JPGs do. So if you want full quality backgrounds, use PNGs.

It's too bad the image goes black when you transition from one transparent background to another. If you go from a transparent image to a screen with no image it fades correctly. Hopefully this gets fixed down the road.
