It has come to my attention that a Fox News tweet posted on Twitter at 12:31pm, January 30, 2017, contains false and misleading language relating to the identity of the suspect in the Quebec mosque terror attack. I have attached a copy of the tweet for your reference.

Over the course of the day, this proved to be false information. In fact, the suspect was identified as a 27 year old French Canadian – not ‎someone of Moroccan-origin.

Sadly, this misleading information has been left to stand on the Fox News Channel’s twitter account and continued to circulate online even now.

Canada is an open, welcoming country that stands by its citizens. We are a nation of millions of immigrants and refugees, of hundreds of cultures, languages, and religions bound by one, unwavering, unshakable belief: we are stronger not in spite of our differences, but because of them.

These tweets by Fox News dishonour the memory of the six victims and their families by spreading misinformation, playing identity politics, and perpetuating fear and division within our communities.

We need to remain focused on keeping our communities safe and united instead of trying to build walls and scapegoat communities. Muslims are predominantly the greatest victims of terrorist acts around the world. To paint terrorists with a broad brush that extends to all Muslims is not just ignorant – it is irresponsible.

If we allow individuals and organizations to succeed by scaring people, we do not actually end up any safer. Fear does not make us safer. It makes us weaker. Ramping up fear and closing our borders is not a solution. It distracts from the real issues that affect people’s day to day life.

For all of these reasons, we ask that Fox News either retract or update the tweet to reflect the suspect’s actual identity.

Thank you for your anticipated cooperation. ‎

Great move. I love the reminder that Fox News' soft and insidious white supremacy is its own identity politics, and the most dangerous type of identity politics in North America.

Alt facts. Right here happening live. And all we can do is whine about it

Haha who knew alt facts would be a concept with info so readily available. But of course it is because every piece of text looks the same. Who knows what's accurate or not. And as we are seeing now, who cares. People just want information that validates their own beliefs and whatever does is automatically true

Maybe it's because there's been so much bullshit from Trump, but I feel like this story completely dropped off the international news radar once it was revealed who the shooter was.

Fuck Fox News. Fuck Sean Spicer. Fuck Donald Trump.

Mad props to Canada and their PM for this statement and his statement over the weekend about the Muslim Ban.

Fucking Fox. They are bringing their nonsense into our country. We have to do everything we can to stop this. We have to be treat it like propaganda war, because they sure do.

Of course it did!

It doesn't fit the narrative of a lot of the bigger "news" sites.

Also Fox should delete their Twitter. Among other things.

It would have been like this regardless of who is in charge.

Canada's not having your garbage, Fox. We have the Rebel and Sun for our misleading right-wing news reporters, thank you very much!

In all seriousness, I am glad they called Fox out on this. It's truly grotesque they could be so irresponsible in reporting this tragedy. Not unexpected given the network's track record when it comes to misreporting stories, but nevertheless grotesque.

"Dear Fox,

Please don't be evil."

What would the charges be? Maybe slander by the person who was interviewed who was identified as the troll? I don't think it would be easy to enforce either.

If they don't comply we ban their reporters and CEOs from the country and from having access to any Canadian press releases (if they even get them in the first place, which I doubt is the case).

We could also pull an EU and go after Twitter and Facebook themselves and force them to comply with our Hate Speech and Anti Bullying laws

That press release in OP, that is how it's done. Take some notes Mr. Muppet.

None of that character assassination bs or wild accusations that WH likes.

Looks like @FoxNews has deleted the tweet saying #QuebecCityMosqueShooting suspect was Moroccan.

That took long enough. No idea if the letter was what caused it to be removed but it appears to be gone.

Sad that it took Trudeau('s office) to make a statement to get a news agency to do their fucking jobs. Unfortunately however, the damage is done and the Alt-right will be repeating this information for years to come

The "everything is fake news" assertion really loses steam when people insist it apparently extends to all international media.

Like, I get that you could be ignorant enough to think there's a conspiracy in your own country, but are you sure they took the time to include Canada as well?
