I'm pretty sure it's supposed to keep you signed in. When I first downloaded before the servers died, I could close the app completely and reopen without having to log in again. After the servers got massacred, I have had to log in every time, even when I just minimize the app... my rule of thumb to stay positive about this app is to blame all of my misgivings on the servers.

I have no idea how to play this.
I have gone to several places today and have not found a single Pokemon other than the one I got when the game started.
I've visited some of the stops and gotten balls, but I want Pokemon.
What is the small bar on the bottom right? I click it and it says Nearby I can click on some, but o have no idea what it does.

When I've gone out in a group, we usually saw the same Pokemon at the same time. Sometimes it would disappear on people though.
I ran into some people last night actually. It was like 11PM in a park, and we happened to see another group of people walking around with their phones. We made some small talk and gave tips on where we found certain Pokemon, It was pretty cool.

And the servers work after I'm minutes away from home. Fantastic. At least I hatched an Abra and got an incubator from a Pokestop so I can work off some of these eggs.
GPS issues are persisting, couldn't even tap the pokestop this time due to teleporting constantly out of range...
How are your encounters? I'm close to an isolated pokestop and I only encountered Pokemon around it. There was some rustling grass even when not being able to see the stop on the map any more, but no encounters at all. I'm hoping it's a one time fluke or a result of not being officially released yet, because it would be piss boring if you can't encounter pokemon while out and about less "cultured" neighborhoods.
Google, I couldn't see the option for choosing any other account. It is even using my main google, would have prefered to set it to my alternate but I guess it went with what it found without asking what I thought about the matter.

That sounds awesome even if it works sometimes. I'm away from university right now, but I can only imagine how cool it is meeting new like-minded people.
That worked but now I can't catch Charmander lol. This looks like it can be pretty fun after these server issues are dealt with.
Click on the white icon on the lower right on the screen to see which Pokemon are nearby. They will have footstep icons beside them to denote how far they are from you (with three being the farthest) and then start hunting! You can tap on a specific Pokemon to have it displayed in the lower right so you can see if you start moving away from it.
Nope. I'm hoping that changes once the game is released here in Canada.
I am actively avoiding the guy who is fighting me and taking the same gym in the parking lot I work at. I'm spoofing my location so I don't have to go over there and he is visibly frustrated that I keep taking the gym back. I saw him outside looking around after I took it but he can't seem to find me... this is way more fun than meeting new people.

I think they can either pop randomly, or you can seek the nearby ones by checking the bottom right box. The less footprints there are, the closer you are to it.
I'm in the same boat with my PTC account, I can login fine with my google account but my PTC account is just dead in the water and has been for most of the day.

6 Pokeballs left (For some reason sometimes when I throw up it goes way to the side)... It's 21:45 and I'm too tired to go out to a pokestop about 15 minutes down the road for 3 pokeballs.

I found a wild Squirtle at work, I didn't think that'd happen... and an Eevee/Shellder earlier as well.
Ah yeah I may have just skimmed posts haha. I guess I'll see in a few minutes when I catch my bus if it still registers movement for egg hatching.

I finally got back on but there are no Pokémon anywhere close to my office, even imaginary creatures avoid this joyless place.

Yup. Literally just happened to me. Couldn't sign in with Trainer ID so I went to Google and had to make a new character again.

unless youre force-closing the app and retrying constantly through the day, then I would say its due to their server issues, nothing with your phone.

I just had a gym taken by a red team member right as I was trying to claim it for the blue team!
Some yellow team person had taken it yesterday, and I was one of the first people at my office so I beat his Pokemon and claimed the spot. When the servers came back on during my lunch break, I noticed that the gym was now unclaimed. I walked over there and noticed another guy holding up his phone walking in a similar direction. We both stopped to look at our phones about 40-50 feet from each other. As I was selecting a Pokemon, the gym was claimed!
Niantic has been pretty serious about banning people for location spoofing in Ingress. If you're just moving 50 yards to a nearby lot, it might pass detection, but if you value your progress, it would be wise to stop (or just start a new account now in case you've already been flagged for a ban wave).
You should really wait for the servers to stabilize. No need to make a new account.
