Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

Finally got a chance to really play. Walked around UT's campus with my wife for over an hour after work. We caught a bunch of Pokemon and interacted with a ton of people playing. This game is truly quite cool.
 
from starting to play yesterday...ive walked 7 and 10 miles when i average 3


im actually kinda disappointed with the pokemon variety - i thought pokemon would be a lot more specific to regions... i've seen so many different pokemon near me. water, grass, pyschic, normal, flying, poisn, dragon, fire, fighting, fairy

I think the only ones i havent come across actually are electric ( though i got a pikachu in an egg and jolteon from evee), ghost, and ground
 
A question about gyms, although I'm still ways off in level, since almost 100% off the time I was out of a building since I installed the servers were down.

Can you capture a gym from a team mate? Do you you get the stuff from gym control if you're not the person there but from the same team?

So in short, should you try to go for the team that controls no gyms to try and cap them to get more stuff, or go with one of the teams in the area?

Also can gym owners change the guarding pokemon to a stronger one? Or are they making it that happen with the cap-recap cycle?
 
So far I've only found first evolution Pokemon. I'm really trying to find me a Gengar but I'll probably have to find a bunch of Ghastlys first and evolve one huh?

A friendly gym can be trained to increase prestige! If there is a slot for more Pokemon, you can also add one of your Pokemon like you would add to an empty gym! If you look at the top of the gym, under the name, there should be a Crown for the highest CP Pokemon and some dots next to the crown. If any of those dots are blank/empty, then you can add a Pokemon! If not, that means they’re full, but you can train a gym to a higher prestige level so that it can hold more Pokemon!

You can only train at friendly gyms to increase their prestige level! You get to choose ONE Pokemon to fight all the Pokemon at the friendly gym. You can definitely choose to stomp that gym with a Pokemon with a MUCH higher CP, but you wont gain much in Prestige.

The real trick is to take a lower CP Pokemon and defeat as many Pokemon as you can! Even if the Pokemon is only one CP lower, it qualifies for full prestige benefits (i think it’s 500 per Pokemon you defeat of a higher CP) while a much higher CP Pokemon will only net like 100 prestige or less.

If you have a pokemon in a Gym for your team, you get the daily bonus rewards as if you were the leader.

You can't change out a pokemon at your own gym, probably for the reason you guessed, it will stay there until defeated by someone and then returned to you.
 
Went for a short walk and only encountered one Ponyta which I seemingly caught.... Then the server went down and I lost it.

But the fun for me was walking around looking and seeing the gyms around me that I can't interact with yet and seeing which Pokemon are on top and what color.

I see three blues and one yellow..... May have to go red when I'm level 5.

Caught six running through the state park some miles from home and would have easily caught more if I wanted. I'm guessing certain locations just have more. That or the distance is less noticeable.

Also, I fucking suck at throwing Pokeballs.
 
Team Blue for life! It was hilarious to see 5 to 6 people at work get up from their desks to try and track down a pokemon near the office.

Oh okay, so with the slots increasing so more people can get rewards I assume, it's going to be a 1 poke per user thing? Eg. John can't put 2 pokes on the gym.

Also is the gym leader purely determined by who "caught it" or would it change if a "secondary" pokemon is more powerful?
 
Wow, looks like Yellow team is finally waking up in my neighborhood. Was beginning to think they didn't exist.
Welp, time to head out and retake the gyms. :p
 
Have enough to finally evolve my first pokemon. ratatat. One has body slam for 50 the other has hyper fang for 35. They are both 50 CP with no special size or weight. What to do?

Correct, 1 pokemon per user per gym.

The gym leader (i.e. the one who has the crown insignia in the top left corner of the gym screen) is whoever has the strongest pokemon occupying a gym.
 
I'm just gonna resume playing when I get back to Manhattan. Wasted a lot of incense in Queens with nothing to show for it :(

Also took 20 damn balls to catch a Zubat. The throws were too short every time >_<

I'm making bank in Astoria. Got a Jigglypuff at Neptune Diner and a bunch of Tangela, Poliwags and Spearows on the way home.
 
Can someone explain what selecting the Pokemon does nearby? For instance if there is a centipede and pidgey and I select the pidgey, am I more likely to get that pidgey? How does it work?

You become gym leader if you leave a more powerful one. The original person doesn't lose out on any rewards though.

Its just there for an easier way to keep track of how close your desired Pokemon is.

Ahhhh no way. I might just hop on an Uber and head there to catch some Pokemon, and maybe get some food lol.

I cant believe I'm really, seriously considering Ubering somewhere for Pokemon. This stupid game is arrrrrrrrr so addictive.

If you're hunting something in particular, it keeps that one on your screen so you can watch the footprints real-time. It's just so you don't have to go keep checking the nearby screen.
 
I'm very curious to see if this game has any staying power at all or if it'll be a short fad that people tire of. I haven't been able to play yet because the game isn't available in my country, but I did play Ingress a while back, and I found that game to be pretty uninteresting. Obviously the Pokemon license adds a lot, but there is still the same core concept of location based gameplay.

If they continue to roll out things to do and other gens of Pokemon the app should be fine. Expand on Gyms and Stops, maybe even come up with some new locations like a PokeCenter or Safaris, etc.

Don't think I've ever been more excited to see a fucking Zubat, since I was like 7 years old playing Pokemon Blue. Shit honestly is a pretty novel experience hahaha. But the constant freezing is pissing me off too much. Think I'll wait for stuff to become more stable, because it's pretty frustrating.
