Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

I decided to drive through the town square tonight to see if there were any good Stops there. There were no less than 25-30 there, and tons of them were lured. I felt like I was at a convention, there were so many people out and about playing this game.

I've actually never seen anything like this before.

Walked around and what not for over an hour and didn't catch shit while using the incense. Bs.

Yeah... I walked around for an hour or two and caught diddly, but now at my house, sitting, not moving, I plop down an incense and I am catching stuff like mad.

iPhone?

After 9 hours of continuous testing GAF I can confirm the iPhone app for at least performance on my 6s+.....is complete utter shit.

Freezing every two Pokemon, terrible loading on the signs, it's fucking borked for the iPhone.

I went and grabbed my one plus 3......again testing another 6 hours straight riding around on my bike. NOT ONE crash......no issues. I'm so mad that the brand new iPhone I have is basically worthless to me because it's absolutely fucking terrible for Pokemon.

Yes, iPhone 6+. I have the same experience as you do.

This tweet appeared on my twitter feed about how Eeveelutions are NOT Random

Thought I'd leave this here in case it wasn't known yet.

I have one poke stop near (which isnt that near) and then a couple more someways down the road, and still find all sorts of stuff. Being near a stop has nothing to do with spawn rates. Was probably server problems if you couldnt find anything.

I've brought incense twice because of the fact that I live in the suburbs. There's a Gym but it's far enough that I have to walk a bit to get there and there are no pokestops. So I was getting kind of bleh about things, and then an eevee, which has never appeared in my area just happened to show up in my room. They were my favorite as a kid so I was embarrassingly just a bit happy to have one at all. The are water types all over the other side of town, despite there being no bodies of water there so maybe the type is randomized or spread out in a specific way so that living on a lake doesn't automatically mean you're only ever catching magikarps (of which I only have one. I'd like more)

I have no idea how gyms work at all but I suspect they'll be changing them soon anyway, considering the fact that nobody seems to know how the hell gyms work.

Can you see any on your map when you load the app? If so, that's still doing better than a whooole lot of people who catch a couple of rattata's in their backyard and then have to drive to the mall to play.

So I read somewhere that being by a body of water will give you a chance to catch water type Pokemon... Is this true? I ask because I walked around a local fishing pond for like 30 mins and only saw the usual Pidgeys, Ratatas, and 1 Pikachu.

Man, trying to find an Abra or a Clefairy and out of nowhere and not in my Nearby box is a Graveler.

I caught it, but I didn't catch a Geodude yet. For some reason, that's just not right.

I'm just chilling in my home with no huge mass of water around (except for my pool) and apparently a Kingler is nearby. It's either the game is messing with me or its just random.

I'm really tempted to see if I can get this Voltorb I found into an Electrode and hope it learns explosion or self-destruct or something.

Gonna bomb every gym just for kicks and giggles.

Imagine how popular an actual well made mmo Pokemon game would be. In a sense this is a AR mmo lite(very lite) Pokemon game.

I want a mmo Pokemon game.

Huh? Gyms are incredibly easy to understand given how overly simplified they are in this game. What don't you understand?

Apparently Ingress had a system where you could suggest locations for things.
That system, suggesting nodes in Ingress, is ultimately what decided the position of stops and gyms in this game.

In some ways, you can consider Ingress a lengthy test case and data aggregation experiment for future projects... like this one. Something like 50% of the Ingress points in their exact positions are ported over to Pogo. I dunno if they are going to introduce it in this one or not.

There's also something to be said for places that honestly, just don't have anything you'd make a notable landmark. I know that sounds harsh, but I mean, imagine you just go hiking in a forest, there's no notable individual markers, and right now that 100% means no pokestops.

Even in Ingress, you couldn't just choose "This arrangement of roots on the ground at this longitude and latitude" it had to be something easily identifiable by other players. In Niantic's perfect version of the game, things that change in real life- by me, there are a couple mall signs/sculptures that are pokestops that are no longer actually there- would also cease to exist in the game. These things will never be perfect, but it's what they're going for with the augmented reality concept.

yeah 100% agreed, I cannot think of anything I would compare this to.
Where'd you catch it? I've been thinking about driving to the city's power plant to see if there's any electric types as I haven't seen me other than a joleteon.
caught him with the sweet power of my legs from a 10km egg.

So how do you get rare Pokemon or those with higher CP? Do I need to level up or go to a different location? I'm currently halfway through level 4, and while I'm not really playing much, I feel like its a pretty slow process. Especially given data caps.

Best wishes.

Okay, more of an Android question, but I want to use my Google Play Rewards from my main account - which is also the one I log in with - but when I go to get coins it brings up my other Google account to check out. Any idea how to fix it?

Just level up.

Later on you'll get razz berries and stronger pokeballs that can catch higher dudes. Just keep leveling. Combo lucky egg + incense + lure near a park to powerlevel. Evolve your army of pidgey and rattata while your lucky egg is active and feel the sweet XP rolling in. Try to get an egg or two to hatch during this too.

The only Water types I've caught (Psyduck and Magikarp) have been near bodies of water, so there might be some truth to it.

I'm trying to find out about eggs but for general catching, yes, your level has a lot to do with it. After I got level 5-6 I finally started catching stuff with CP over 100. I'm stuck on level 7 right now but I think you start getting less common Pokémon at level 10 as well (or at least they appear more often).

Visit Pokestops often. If you get a 10 km egg, put it in the incubator. A couple runs or one biking trip later, you'll likely have a rare high CP Pokemon.

I'm level 7 and my highest CP Pokemon by far is my Lapras I hatched from a 10 km egg and powered up.

I still don't understand the gyms. There was a friendly gym near me, so I went to go help defend it. It was prestige level two and already had two defenders. I fought there a little bit and won my first battle, but lost the next few. I didn't leave a pokemon behind to defend because I don't think I was given the option? Did me fighting and losing help that gym? I feel like by winning the first battle I weakened the defending pokemon and made it easier to defeat for another team. I'm confused.

I think there's two options when it's your own team, either reinforce or fight. You chose fight. I could be wrong.

I live in a suburban area, so things are really spread out where I am too. I reeaallllly want to suggest this location as a pokestop or gym.

I'd call it... Route 12

The only water types I've caught have been near bodies of water, but not exceptionally close. I caught a Horsea and Squirtle in my neighborhood, which is like 0.5 - 1 mile(s) from a River, and a Krabby and Kingler about half a mile from a lake. But I can't say for certain what is considered "near".

Just cracked open my first egg...
...and it was a Magikarp.

But then I caught a Kingler and a Fearow so it turned out okay in the end.

This game is straight-up magical and will probably be the first time I throw money at microtransactions.

It's not random, but it's also not impossible to catch pokemon in situations outside of the areas in which they actually are most common.

You can see a bunch of research beta testers did on the spawns in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4PDm_TIqvs they just compiled data from 300 players throughout the country about what spawned there. But their data also showed that for most pokemon they seemed to have a ~5% chance of spawning anywhere (if they spawned at all).

That video has a bunch of interesting stuff including this preliminary guess at the distribution by possible "terrain types"

Their data may not hold true in every location on Earth and there was probably limited stuff from the beta. But I can tell you that:

1) The canal by my apartment spawns lots of water types and lots and lots of Magikarp. I see them multiple times a day taking up 2 or 3 of my nearby slots, and if I go out and run along the canal they always end up being in it or along the grass edge of it. It's possible they may spawn further inland than the actual water and I don't catch those (every so often one gets away and disappears before I get close) but they always seem to actually be there.
2) I definitely live in a coastal region and I absolutely have seen the most Pokemon from the 3rd category, except I'd say tons of Weedles and Spearows. I actually have not encountered a single Pokemon from the top category at all, except Ponyta, who came from a 5k egg. edit: And Growlithe and Mankey, also each from 5k eggs, forgot I just got them when I got home (WOO)

Most people aren't going to watch the video or care though, and probably shouldn't. I think just going places and seeing what pops up while you're there is fun, even if we do kind of get it down to an "exact science" one day

Some friends and I went to a park that has a lot of PokeStops around it tonight.. I set a couple lures myself and then the rest started lighting up with lures and more and more people started showing up - I think over twenty in total, all playing Pokemon Go.

The craziest part: this is in Canada where the game hasn't been officially released yet.

My night out at the bars became a Pokemon Go fiesta. I saw people all over the city playing this game. At the bar and on the walk there, groups of 5-15 people huddling and laughing. This game is a cultural phenomenon overnight. Not sure I've seen anything like it.

There is no benefit to living in rural areas, or going for a hike to hunt for pokemon in the actual woods. Pokemon only spawn where there is a lot of cell phone activity, or 'XM' in Ingress.

Why not make a whole bunch of nature Pokemon be more likely to spawn the farther they are from cell phone activity? You find them when you go for a hike in the woods. Or for that matter, add some Pokemon that spawn if they are a good distance from a lot of gyms and pokespots (ie, more common in rural areas).

So does this keep going if you leave the appup but turn off your screen on Android? I turned on battery saver mode and see it dims if you turn your phone upside down, but in my pocket my screen will still shut off

It seems Pokemon just has that ability. Remember twitch plays Pokemon? That was crazy popular. Everyone I knew even if they weren't into twitch(some didn't even really understand what twitch was) or Pokemon heard of it.
