just got a taurus. is it rare?
I agree. It would be nice to see if there was some lures going on downtown without having to waste gas and see.I think my biggest gripe with this game so far is on the map, I want to zoom out.
Like, REALLY zoom out.
See my entire city and check where the hot spots are at. I am fortunate for the few spots at my place of work, but mostly in a rural area with no sidewalks, so pokestops are few and far between and most of them are churches that can't be walked to (and 1 fire station), so would be nice to see where else I could go to stock up.
There is no benefit to living in rural areas, or going for a hike to hunt for pokemon in the actual woods. It looks Pokemon only spawn where there is a lot of cell phone activity, or 'XM' in Ingress.
Why not make a whole bunch of nature Pokemon be more likely to spawn the farther they are from cell phone activity? You find them when you go for a hike in the woods. Or for that matter, add some Pokemon that spawn if they are a good distance from a lot of gyms and pokespots (ie, more common in rural areas).
I feel like I need to move somewhere else that's more active or something. Some friends and I went to a park that has a lot of PokeStops around it tonight.. I set a couple lures myself and then the rest started lighting up with lures and more and more people started showing up - I think over twenty in total, all playing Pokemon Go.
The craziest part: this is in Canada where the game hasn't been officially released yet.

It's not random, but it's also not impossible to catch pokemon in situations outside of the areas in which they actually are most common.
You can see a bunch of research beta testers did on the spawns in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4PDm_TIqvs they just compiled data from 300 players throughout the country about what spawned there. But their data also showed that for most pokemon they seemed to have a ~5% chance of spawning anywhere (if they spawned at all).
That video has a bunch of interesting stuff including this preliminary guess at the distribution by possible "terrain types"
Their data may not hold true in every location on Earth and there was probably limited stuff from the beta.
never seen one.just got a taurus. is it rare?
I find myself having better luck at night with rare Pokemon.
Fml, there is an ivysaur that is 3 footstep away from me, but I have to babysit my niece.
Ditto, evening or later at least
Fml, there is an ivysaur that is 3 footstep away from me, but I have to babysit my niece.
This is exactly what they should do. The fact that the screen needs to be on and doesn't even count steps makes it pretty bad for rural and some suburban areas.
Stroller?Fml, there is an ivysaur that is 3 footstep away from me, but I have to babysit my niece.
Well, hang on, Los Angeles is 15 miles from the ocean. One of their conclusions was that there were both regional similarities between climate areas as well as local area terrain.I live close to the desert city, Los Angeles and I live far, far away from the ocean.
I mean I've got a Paras too and I got a Staryu in the parking lot of a hockey stadium.According to the picture, I've encountered Rhyhorn and Ekans in the Desert category but these pokemon have appeared in my Nearby box (Growlithe, Cubone, and Chansey). I caught a Paras, which I found in my home and is nowhere near a forest of any kind.
There might be some merit to certain Pokemon appearing often in certain locations but so far that info as you said isn't concrete. I believe the developers don't want certain Pokemon restricted to certain types of land so I'll just continue the notion that the Pokemon encounters are random.
got kicked out of an outdoor mall just now ahaha...there were a few people there.
Lures do work.
Hmm... To go out in the dark or not...I find myself having better luck at night with rare Pokemon.
Incense does not really seem worth it at the moment. So I used incense and only one Pokémon (Zubat) ever appeared. What gives?
It's uncommonI got a Starmie today in a supermarket -- is it normal to get already evolved pokemon?
Hmm... To go out in the dark or not...
What CP?Just caught a super high level Seadra at the club. I'm the coolest guy here.

as far as "random," in the colloquial sense, I mean you can use incense and catch all kinds of shit, clearly that isn't region or terrain based, but for other stuff, there's a big difference between "random" and "you can only ever catch eevee in deciduous forests." Obviously, to get a real read on this, we need data from ideally millions of evenly distributed players, but we don't have that![]()
Hmm okay. At least I didn't pay for it.Incense does not really seem worth it at the moment.
Yeah that's what I thoughtServers were probably screwing up.
501!What CP?
I live east of LA, West Covina to be exact and its about 35 miles to the ocean. Which is like a 40 minute drive if there's no traffic (ha haaa)
So there's no concrete proof then. Then I'm not really sure what you're trying to say here.

It worked for me earlier just chilling at home. I caught about 5 pokemon. If you've been reading this thread, you'll see that I've been one of the biggest haters of incense. But last night I caught 2 starter Pokemon with them. I don't know what to think anymore.
I got mine at olive gardenWhere'd you catch it? I've been thinking about driving to the city's power plant to see if there's any electric types as I haven't seen me other than a joleteon.
It kind of blows my mind they didn't do this, or that it wasn't exposed in testing.
Here goes:Can someone help me understand the whole Gym thing?
So, I had my Pokemon placed at a level three gym. Mine was the weakest one, and it seems like someone came and killed it. The gym appears to have leveled down to level 2 in the process, so I couldn't just place my Pokemon back in there. I want my 'mon there for the bonus so I decided to fight even though it was my color gym. I killed the first Pokemon of two with ease, and then died to the second one. I had no option to switch another Pokemon in, and after I lost, the first Pokemon that I killed was still placed there. ???. So I killed it again and died to the second one again, and it was still there.
How does this all work? What does "training" mean for the training medal? I only have seen options to place my Pokemon or fight the gym.
Also, do you have to clear the whole Gym with one Pokemon? If so, wtf?
The whole collection and level up thing is addicting but I can't help but think the battling part of Pokemon has been all but completely ignored.
Edit: it seems like training must mean fighting Pokemon at your own color gym, and that you actually can't dethrone them if it's your own color. I guess I should have kept training until the gym went back to level 3? And if I had done the same thing at a different color gym it would have actually dethroned the Pokemon I killed?
