Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

I think my biggest gripe with this game so far is on the map, I want to zoom out.

Like, REALLY zoom out.

See my entire city and check where the hot spots are at. I am fortunate for the few spots at my place of work, but mostly in a rural area with no sidewalks, so pokestops are few and far between and most of them are churches that can't be walked to (and 1 fire station), so would be nice to see where else I could go to stock up.

I agree. It would be nice to see if there was some lures going on downtown without having to waste gas and see.

There is no benefit to living in rural areas, or going for a hike to hunt for pokemon in the actual woods. It looks Pokemon only spawn where there is a lot of cell phone activity, or 'XM' in Ingress.

Why not make a whole bunch of nature Pokemon be more likely to spawn the farther they are from cell phone activity? You find them when you go for a hike in the woods. Or for that matter, add some Pokemon that spawn if they are a good distance from a lot of gyms and pokespots (ie, more common in rural areas).

This is exactly what they should do. The fact that the screen needs to be on and doesn't even count steps makes it pretty bad for rural and some suburban areas.

Some friends and I went to a park that has a lot of PokeStops around it tonight.. I set a couple lures myself and then the rest started lighting up with lures and more and more people started showing up - I think over twenty in total, all playing Pokemon Go.

The craziest part: this is in Canada where the game hasn't been officially released yet.

I feel like I need to move somewhere else that's more active or something.

There's a lot of ridiculously nice looking walking routes being posted in here, and here I am just kind of walking around aimlessly in nearby neighborhoods with 0 Pokestops in them.

They desperately need a feature for marking locations on the map to be recommended for Pokestops or gyms.

It's not random, but it's also not impossible to catch pokemon in situations outside of the areas in which they actually are most common.

You can see a bunch of research beta testers did on the spawns in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4PDm_TIqvs they just compiled data from 300 players throughout the country about what spawned there. But their data also showed that for most pokemon they seemed to have a ~5% chance of spawning anywhere (if they spawned at all).

That video has a bunch of interesting stuff including this preliminary guess at the distribution by possible "terrain types"

Their data may not hold true in every location on Earth and there was probably limited stuff from the beta.

I live close to the desert city, Los Angeles and I live far, far away from the ocean. According to the picture, I've encountered Rhyhorn and Ekans in the Desert category but these pokemon have appeared in my Nearby box (Growlithe, Cubone, and Chansey). I caught a Paras, which I found in my home and is nowhere near a forest of any kind.

There might be some merit to certain Pokemon appearing often in certain locations but so far that info as you said isn't concrete. I believe the developers don't want certain Pokemon restricted to certain types of land so I'll just continue the notion that the Pokemon encounters are random.

Gonna compile a few FAQs I've seen in a bit. There were a couple things that nobody else I met today was aware of, like the fact that you get a bunch of the starter candy for the pokemon from any egg you hatch. It's tempting to spend them all right away on the thing that popped out of the egg but sometimes holding on to them in favor of evolving stuff when you really need XP more than higher CP is beneficial.
just got a taurus. is it rare?
never seen one.

Can someone help me understand the whole Gym thing?

So, I had my Pokemon placed at a level three gym. Mine was the weakest one, and it seems like someone came and killed it. The gym appears to have leveled down to level 2 in the process, so I couldn't just place my Pokemon back in there. I want my 'mon there for the bonus so I decided to fight even though it was my color gym. I killed the first Pokemon of two with ease, and then died to the second one. I had no option to switch another Pokemon in, and after I lost, the first Pokemon that I killed was still placed there. ???. So I killed it again and died to the second one again, and it was still there.

How does this all work? What does "training" mean for the training medal? I only have seen options to place my Pokemon or fight the gym.

Also, do you have to clear the whole Gym with one Pokemon? If so, wtf?

The whole collection and level up thing is addicting but I can't help but think the battling part of Pokemon has been all but completely ignored.

Edit: it seems like training must mean fighting Pokemon at your own color gym, and that you actually can't dethrone them if it's your own color. I guess I should have kept training until the gym went back to level 3? And if I had done the same thing at a different color gym it would have actually dethroned the Pokemon I killed?

Just caught my first wild Pikachu! 😁😁

I love how Pikachu uses the anime cry instead of the 8 bit cry... I wish every Pokémon did that, really I think it would have been a great step forward for the new gen video game Pokémon franchise

I had to install a custom ROM on my Galaxy S3 as it only had Android 4.3 and there weren't anymore updates for it. Enged up getting CyanogenMod (Android version 6.0.1), and Pokemon Go works like a charm now (though I still had to install the APK manually as it still doesn't show up on the Google Play store). The only issue now is the battery life. I might have to look into investing in extra battery packs.

Well, hang on, Los Angeles is 15 miles from the ocean. One of their conclusions was that there were both regional similarities between climate areas as well as local area terrain.

I mean I've got a Paras too and I got a Staryu in the parking lot of a hockey stadium.

as far as "random," in the colloquial sense, I mean you can use incense and catch all kinds of shit, clearly that isn't region or terrain based, but for other stuff, there's a big difference between "random" and "you can only ever catch eevee in deciduous forests." Obviously, to get a real read on this, we need data from ideally millions of evenly distributed players, but we don't have that :P

Is everyone else having better luck with the servers?
Every Gym I have tried to capture just bugs out on me when I deliver the finishing blow on the other Pokemon so nothing happens.

50% of the time I catch a Pokemon the game freezes at the pokeball animation.

Games otherwise fun though.
Just got a Scyther, can't really do anything with him though, I would need more duplicates to disenchant into candy to level him up so he can hold his own.

So the last few times i defeated a gym.... The gym only lowers a level opposed to being completely defeated and available for take over... Is this because it is a level 3/4 gym opposd to level 1/2?

is this a bug or how it works?

I don't know what it's like for you guys but living downtown and right next to a college, Pokemon Go is like nothing I've seen before. Me and a friend were just walking around for an hour or two and met no less than 40 people doing the exact same, it's crazy. Culminating in us finally tracking down this damn Ghastly in a gas station parking lot. Some dude with a big ass truck and a hot girl in the passenger seat sees us "Gotta catch em all boys!" I had no clue if he was making fun of us or not. Then he sees us catching it:

"Oh shit, theres a pokemon right here?! what is it?"
"GHASTLY?!?!?! oh damn I need that."
Flips his fucking truck all the way around him and his girlfriend whip out their phones and catch it.

Man I want Farfetchd (my fav poke) this is the only game other than Stadium 2 that I can potentially use him without him being locked behind garbage stats.

I live east of LA, West Covina to be exact and its about 35 miles to the ocean. Which is like a 40 minute drive if there's no traffic (ha haaa)

So there's no concrete proof then. Then I'm not really sure what you're trying to say here.

Incense does not really seem worth it at the moment.

If you've been reading this thread, you'll see that I've been one of the biggest haters of incense. But last night I caught 2 starter Pokemon with them. I don't know what to think anymore.

I was chasing a charmander a while ago but my battery got to 7% so I had to run home. I think it's time for an external battery charger.

It worked for me earlier just chilling at home. I caught about 5 pokemon.

Here goes:

Enemy Gyms (either other color from your own team)
The enemy Gym, depending on its level, will have a certain number of Pokemon defending it and you can review them all beforehand by swiping. To battle them, you select a team of 6 pokemon. They will pop out in the order of top left first, all the way to bottom right last (that's where you want to put your "ringers," your strongest or type-advantageous pokemon).

If you defeat the Gym you will lower its prestige. Depending on how fortified it was this may or may not have cleared it out. If not, you'll battle again, though if its level went down there will be fewer Pokemon inside. When it is completely demolished, the gym is white and you can install whatever pokemon you like, become Leader, and get the Daily Bonus (go to the shop and click the shield in the top right).

Friendly Gyms (your color)
If a friendly gym is already owned, you'll get options to either train at it or, if there's an open slot, add a Pokemon. The number of slots for Pokemon is determined by the Gym's level. To train, you select one Pokemon. And attempt to fight through all defenders. The defenders won't actually be harmed, and your Pokemon won't faint if you lose (though it will take damage). For this, you want to choose a Pokemon you can win with (you and the gym get nothing if you lose), but the closer in CP to the highest Pokemon in the Gym, the better- especially if you can win with lower. An ideal pokemon for this task is one of the super effective type of the strongest Pokemon in the gym, slightly below that Pokemon in CP.

If you defeat the Gym, you'll gain XP and the Gym gets Prestige. There's a 5 min cooldown on training. With enough Prestige it will level up, thus unlocking a new slot and you can then choose to add a new Pokemon to defend it, and gain access to the Daily Bonus (go to the shop and click the shield in the top right). If the Pokemon you add now has the highest CP of the Gym you become its leader (and the last to be fought when attacked)

--

There's a little bit of a meta in your roster for attacking/defending. When you conquer a gym and place a pokemon inside, it's really tempting to choose your best in an effort to make it hard to retake. But, when you contribute the Pokemon you lose access to it until the Gym is beaten, so you won't have it to attack other Gyms with. Also, certain types are kind of just worth making sure you keep on you for attacking. I have access to a total of one electric type at the moment that is also my strongest, I can't possibly give him away even though he'd stand a really good chance in my local Gyms at the mall.
