Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

Ok. So i tried this briefly when it came out, sideloaded the .apk to get around the region locks. I had done no research on this going in, I had only my own preconceptions about what the game should be.

I *really* don't understand the way it's taken off, and I would love some insight from those of you who are in to it.
Let me explain: When I heard about this concept, I immediately developed a very clear image of what I thought the game should be. Basically, all the mechanics of a core pokemon game, but sans story and set in real world. So, I expected to do things like these:

Scenario 1: Go on walk, phone vibrates. A wild pidgin appears!
I fight it with my set of 6 active pokemon, using the same mechanics established in the base game. Once weakened, it can be caught with pokeballs. My fighting pokemon gain exp as they finish the fight.

Scenario 2: Phone vibrates, other trainers in area. Can choose to initiate battle, or ignore. Same battle system and exp earnings as from wild fights apply.

Once your pokemon are all knocked out, you need to go to the local pokecenter, wherever that is, and revive them.

Basically, what I'm saying is this: I imagined a core pokemon game, but the overworld happens to be the real world. And it sounded awesome. What I played briefly was something else, and I'd really appreciate some insight into why people would be excited for what this has turned out to be, and why doing it the way I imagined wouldn't have been infinitely better. If economics is the issue, I'm sure they could still nickel-and-dime people by selling pokeballs or something.

I just don't get it, please help me do so.

The fact that it lacks the mechanics of a core pokemon game is exactly why it is so popular.

was about to go to bed when I checked the app and saw abra and squirtle silhouettes. half hour later and all I could find was a gastly. going to bed defeated now

Ok, so the people pulled into this are not the same audience that plays the core games? Then why has it gained this much of a following using that brand?

Because it allows for the collecting and discovery aspect without having to worry about team building and stats.

Because it's a game that encourages and rewards visiting new places, walking/running long distances, and interacting with other people in public.

I should mention I'm a pretty big fan of the core series and I'm playing the shit out of GO.

I would say that is a fair assumption.

I've only played red/blue, was hugely into it when it first came out but haven't touched the series since. Gave the other games a brief chance but could not at all get into it.

I've literally been glued to this game since release.
 
I don't know if it's been posted, but that "Eeveelutions are not random!" image is wrong. I just had an Eevee with Swift (which should evolve into Vaporeon based on that) evolve into Flareon. I still bet they're random.

Anyway, spent lots of time with friends out and about. It was always funny to place down a lure and watch people start flocking towards you. The lure's not meant for Pokemon, obviously. It's meant for attracting actual people.

I am getting kind of bummed at the seemingly lack of variety around my town. Weedle, Pidgey, Rattata for days. If you're lucky, Oddish or Zubat. And it's not just like that on my half of town or anything. Everywhere I've been - and I've been around - is like that here in town. I'm afraid I'll never see certain Pokemon.

Why do you think pokesav was so popular, average person doesnt care about it to the extent hardcore fans do

In my experience, 1-2 footprints is actually helpful (0 not being helpful because it literally actually gives you the pokemon if you click on it). 3 prints is fucking useless and misleading. 3 prints is fucked up and needs to be corrected or removed or something.
 
I said it before, but reading through Twitter it seems people are going places they shouldn't late at night and getting in trouble with the police. Be smart and don't go to parks and other closed areas for the night. As much as that Charizard is tempting you.
 
There's a jigglypuff and what appears to be the silhouette of a pikachu with spiky hair very close, but I couldn't find them while taking a walk. Maybe someone else caught them? Is that how it works? I see people with their phones out walking around tonight.....

its funny as hell i live by hella bars, come 2 am, every single gym gets engaged in combat and changes team color

battles dont usually end until 3-4 am

Everyone is in their own instance. While we all see the same Pokemon we all get a chance to get one. Pokemon can leave if you don't find them after awhile.
 
I've never played any Pokemon game till now and am already hooked. As primitive a solution as this is currently, this kind of implementation of augmented reality is proof enough that it's gonna spread like wildfire. If they can keep returning user numbers up for a spell I can see Silicon Valley imploding at the rush for more AR r&d, and a crap ton of copycat apps. Does Nintendo even need to release NX now? lol
 
At a fine dining restaurant this evening and overheard a woman in her early mid twenties waxing on about how excited she is about the game, and how she feels like a kid again. A busser overheard her and suggested she might be able to catch something I didn't quite hear. However, she pulled out her phone and after capturing the Pokemon the excitement, and gratitude she had was absolutely amazing. I'm so excited to see a game that breaks down so many barries

i think i have 2 pidgeots and 200 pidgey candy

is it just cuz where i live or cuz im in the city or do spawn everywhere like crazy

- what's the point of selecting a Pokemon by tapping the icon on the right corner?

- grass show up, go there, nothing happens. Why?

- i'm on Android, if the screen goes on standby, is the game still running and warns me of nearby monster?

1. Just makes tracking individual Pokémon easier.
2. This one I have no idea about. Curious as well.
3. No. It's kinda bullshit but your screen needs to be on. I set my screen timer to 10 minutes and turn my brightness down.

Took 6 hours for someone to beat my Gym leader Dratini CP 175
I was tempted to leave my magikarp but knew it would lose first round since splash does 0 damage
 
This thread moves so fast. Has there been confirmation about the paw distance estimation? I think it's about ~100 feet per paw. I spotted a Snorlax in the first row, first column that was 3 paws away so investigated and it ended up being in a parking lot nearby. I checked the distance on Google maps and it's almost exactly 300 feet away from where I was.

Also, I had no idea that even if you catch the same monster, they might have different move sets. Makes me wonder what I got rid of that I shouldn't have based off of better abilities.
 
Near my girlfriends house there is a spot with four pokestops all within range of each other. Its pretty popular, and at one point all four had lure modules attached. It attracted about 35 people.
