Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

Fuck yeah my favorite Pokemon just spawned in my bedroom. Not even mad that his CP is trash

Anyone here with a WSJ subscription?

I'm a player from China which is really eager to play pokemon go.
Could anyone help me have a look at the following article, and summarize for me?

I would be really grateful!!

http://www.wsj.com/articles/pokemon-chasers-in-china-hit-brick-wall-1468309365?mod=e2twa

Hi fellow Chinese Gafer, nice to meet you. I don't have a WSJ subscription but I did manage to use Firefox and NoScript to read that article.

It started with describing what the game is, how popular it is in AU, NZ, and US, but the Chinese fans cannot play it due to the Google and GFW problem. Even after one managed to work around that, he will still be blocked by the GPS-locking, which of course, isn't particularly targeting China. Then it went go to say that there are Taobao listings for US Apple IDs and Google accounts, etc. for people who want to play it.

It then interviewed a college student in Chongqing, who was frustrated at not being able to play the game even after borrowing a US-registered iPhone from his friends. He received messages from friends that the GPS-locking was gone yesterday, but by the time he tried, the locking was back up.

It observed that there is quite a buzz about the game on the Weibo platform, from both the people who can and cannot play it. The region-locking seems to have left out the northern part of China so it is said that people there are able to play and they boasted with screenshots. Even ICBC made a joke with the game on its Weibo account.

It also mentioned the Chinese Pokemon Go counterfeit "City Magical Creatures Go" topping the Chinese App store chart, showing the thirst for the game in China. It commented that there could be a huge potential for the game in China but neither Pokémon Co. nor Tencent has commented on the rumor that they are working together to bring the game to China.
---end of sunmmary---

The report seems to be factual as far as I know. Though there is nothing we don't already know but I'm still kinda impressed WSJ has such a comprehensive understanding of the whole situation.

Is there a list anywhere of what items you can get from pokestops, and maybe what level you get them?

I know for a while I couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting any potions or revives then I hit level 5 and their relatively common. I thought that would be it but I just hit level 8 and know berries are coming in like crazy.

What other items start dropping at higher levels?

I have to go to 10KM the beach to find anything.

People in huge cities like New York and London have it easy because of all the Ingress shit in those places

Dang. Well, I guess it makes it more like an adventure. I feel like a potato just sitting here watching them pop up (in my defense, can't go out until the baby-walking hour).

Has there been any correlation worked out with regards to evolving and weight and size?

I have found that you more often than not only get XS or XL on the weight category with size mostly being normal. because of this I have been trying to evolve when its XL in the hopes of getting an XL next form but a lot of the times I end up with an XS sized evolved form.

Would be interesting to see if there is any correlation or if it actually makes any difference on performance.

Everyone gets a fancy button!

If you've got any companion apps that might be great to use with GO (like rewards, charity things, etc), let me know and i'll add em.

That's a great idea! I love that apps like that are popping up.

I've used OpenSignal: it uses crowdsourcing to create a worldwide map of mobile network reception. You just install the app and let it track mobile network data in the background.
Within the settings you can pick your measurement intervals.

Just had the revalation that I can pair my Nexus 4 to my actual phone's tethering wifi and maybe play.

...but there's no point because the Japanese servers aren't online.

Hopefully I can pick up a temp sim next week and the servers go online

Finally got my group of friends to get to LVL 5 and we decided to have a battle at our first gym at the same team. We all also wanted to be on the same team. The battle...

We all got fuckin rekt. Is there a way to fight lower level gym battles? the ridiculous difficulty jump made me LOL and want to delete the game.

What do?

I really love seeing people migrate to lure modules. I used one at about 10pm at a nearby kid's park while walking my dog. After about 10 minutes 2 cars showed up and parked nearby, then a small family came in, and 3-4 people also showed up. Made me feel good.

No because it's actual players guarding the gym. You just hit level 5 and there's pretty much no chance you'll takeover a gym unless you're lucky enough to find one protected by 100cp or less.

Just keep gathering Pokemon and gaining experience and you'll find Pokemon with higher CP so that you can participate in gym battles. Also something to note is that gyms usually get taken over pretty fast so holding them really isn't that big of a deal unless your time for amount of gyms held is low.

well, the whole concept is based on making pokemons strong
what use would it be if newcomers could easily destroy high level pokemon?

there's no way around getting strong pokemon and making them stronger, deal with gyms later or find some with low level players. no way around it.

Get to a higher level. Best you can do at 5 is just train at one of your team's gyms.

Some guy on Reynad's Go stream figured out dodge mechanics. Something about dodging when you see "action lines" or when the screen glows. He was able to defeat a 1000+ Pokemon with one that was only 250 or so.

This game is terrible in my area (UK), only Pokemon you find are the garbage pidey/rattata/spearow etc. I hit level 12 yesterday and I camped 2 pokestops with 2 lures going at the same time last night, best I caught was an Eevee which I had 4 of all ready.

It's just garbage round here, I went to Manchesters biggest shopping centre on Sunday and same story there, pidgey, rattata, spearow.... Loads of Pokestops in there at least.

Come to Knutsford, yo. I'm up to 14 now just in the apartment. Who knows what'll happen when I go outside. :D

Yeah every Gym around me is level 5. I wonder where the heck everyone evolved their Pokemons, it has been like that since day 1.
How am I supposed to be able to train my Pokemons? Pick repeats and level them up? And hope for the rarer pokemon to be attracted to my zone?

For the first taste of battle they shouldn't be throwing high lvl stuff at newcomers. Seems like basic game design. It was a huge downer for all of us, especially when it was so damn exciting building up to that point of our first battle. Atleast a tutorial battle would have been nice

I get it though. Just wish there was a way to get to that point with some rewards on the way up.

Ahh that makes sense then. Thats what gyms are about for the newcomers then.

How do you do this - I tried to train at a friendly gym, but my pokemon just got rekt, and I couldn't see any boost to XP or CP. I think I'm doing it wrong!

You need to actually beat any of the pokemons that defend the gym. The more you beat, the more the prestige the gym will increase by.

I went to bed last night with 4/4 gyms in my area dominated by Valor.

Wake up to see them all bright blue. Team Mystic never sleeps.

so if anyone needs a portable battery

eCase via Amazon has 20,000mAh Kmashi Dual USB Quick Charge 2.0 External Battery Pack for $32.99 - $13 w/ promotion code 8KZNDJ7M = $19.99. Shipping is free with Prime or if you spend $49 or more.

if you search for 20,000mAh Kmashi Dual USB Quick Charge 2.0 External Battery Pack it shows up.

I don't want to accidentally post any affiliate links from slickdeals thus why I am not linking this.
Tried applying the code on amazon, no luck?

I'm convinced that the CP of hatched Pokémons are based on what level you incubate them. I'm level 13 and got a 170 Hitmonlee and 152 Slowpoke...

This game is going to die real fast unless they find a way to address rural areas being completely devoid of both Pokemon and Pokestops...

Sucks having huge areas with nothing when there are areas that are just saturated with Pokemon and pokestops. My neighborhood is t bad, but just outside of it there is a lot of area to cover to find more stops. And it's a residential area, lots of houses close together. Then there are places like my wife's office, she can hit 4 pokestops just walking around the office.

"3 Footprints" might as well be a middle finger. I don't even waste my time.

I'd like to see them refine "nearby."

Maybe when you're tracking a single Pokemon it could at least give you one compass direction that it's *not* in.

Some quick gym questions.

I haven't been able to do gym stuff much, only level 6. But if I put a Pokemon on a gym and that Pokemon is defeated, does it come back to me, or is it lost?

Before bed last night I was sorely tempted to go for a walk, but sleep won out.

Is the a guide to gyms out yet? That's the one post I don't really understand. Tried training on a friendly gym yesterday, but got no experience.

If your defending Pokémon are defeated they are returned to you with 1 hp.

To get xp from a friendly gym you need to defeat at least one of the defending Pokémon. The more you defeat the more xp you get.

Yup. I have no pokeballs and literally have no reason to play. Theres a poke stop down the road but it's on a main road with no side walk

If you lose battles at friendly Gyms, you get 0 XP?
That's a slap in the face for low level Pokemons...
You can easily grind common ones to a competitive CP level. That's why they're everywhere. Sure, everyone wants the rare types, but they're difficult to power up too because they're so rare.

Evolving rare pokemons should be hard. Being able to do something with them should not :|

Went hunting with my rollerblades this evening, makes this game much more enjoyable. Easy to hold my phone and travel fast, glide when resting. I got to switch to a proper 8 wheel setup.

20160711_200548_zpsakog6lzw_edit_1468303632482_zpsc1kwffsz.jpg

This is how I actually hunt usually. I love my blades.

And here's my story from tonight (cross posted from my FB)

I had a pretty incredible journey tonight. Started out looking for an Abra, then some drunk bum flagged me down. She walked about a mile with me fascinated as I told her about what I was doing lol. Miss Betty was also pretty psyched to see someone actually rollerblading! She then talked for a while since I stopped at a bus station to catch something. After she finished I got up, she gave me 2 dollars and said thanks for making her night. Nobody stops to talk, lol. Nice lady. Then I cruised around for like an hour and a half more, found Ninetails behind Denny's and ran into some kid catching pokemon barefoot. He was just walking around in the street lmao. Hilarious. I told him about Ninetails and he sprinted off. I then found Charmander while taking a detour back home and shortly after bulbsaur. Tonight has been good. Imma go to sleep now after I get in this salt bath. My legs are tired

Goddamn that 60 attack power. One of the strongest moves in the game right? Perhaps after solar beam if that exists.

Well, you have to catch them to use them. Plus, finding a low CP monster with elemental advantage can go a long way in besting stronger monsters.

Just yesterday I avoided gyms because of the 1k CP mons but I realized those were the highest ranked ones. They should have lower tier mons there too. Today I overtook two towers and none of my mons were over 600 CP until I evolved my Flareon.

Congregating towards Pokéstops helps also. I found 5 Jynx today visiting a spot that was perpetually Lure'd.

Goddamn that 60 attack power. One of the strongest moves in the game right? Perhaps after solar beam if that exists.
Is it? I guess I should feel lucky finding a Snorlax with 70. :0

They need find a way to implement stops in a way that doesnt break the game

This seems almost impossible

Hopefully they start taking new portal submissions for Ingress

It could help this issue a lot

Guys halp.

So I was playing Pokemon Go around my mall, and this cute grill comes up to me and asks me if I know where the Electabuzz was, so I told her "Yeah, I found it a bit over there by the mechanic!" And she asked me if I could take her to it.

So I took the cute grill to the Electabuzz, and she asked if she could stick around and we'd walk together. So I said sure. We walked and caught a few commons for like 40 minutes, and we talked and stuff. My battery was close to dying, so I told her I'm gonna head home. She wanted my number and she wanted us to do a date perhaps and just go catch Pokemon.

I said sure and took her number, and said goodbye.

Guys I didn't think I'd see her ever again. So I lied to her to make myself not seem like a loser. :c I told her I live in my own apartment, go to University, and I own this nice car. I live with my parents, I actually don't attend school right now, and My car is a POS and the car I was driving was my sister since mine was taken by my father to get an oils change.

GAF do I never contact this grill again? Cause I don't want her to know I'm a liar. :c

Fake. No sane person would lie about so many things in one conversation.

Went up to Kings Park (Perth, AU) and the place is still absolutely packed! I did not manage to take a picture of the main area, but as you enter there must be 15-20 Pokestops all in a row, with most having lures on them. I reckon 500-1000 people easily. All just walking about, chatting and catching Pokemon.

Bizarre but amazing to see.

Edit : Managed to catch a 500ish Ivasaur and Wartortle, so that was awesome.

Fake. No sane person would lie about so many things in one conversation.

He may just be insane. Haha

Goddamn that 60 attack power. One of the strongest moves in the game right? Perhaps after solar beam if that exists.

I'm assuming there's like hyperbeam that's stronger, but it's damn near I think.

Also.... Charmander is near. I may just go back outside >_>

So, the leveling system for pokemon is a bit flawed isn't it? I mean, it's heavily weighted towards the "common" pokemon, so having for example a Kabutops that is stronger than a Pidgeot seems nearly impossible? The amount of Pidgey-candies is insane.
