my younger sister asked me if she could try out a pokemon game. I gave her my pearl and the first pokemon she caught was a shiny shinx.

it is awesome. I think it's the best pkmn game so far. It just doesn't have he nostalgia factor.

Ass. I still haven't seen let alone caught a shiny despite how many times I replayed the games.

It's only the pink Crobat that I want, though. Even Red Gyarados looks stupid.
 
My girlfriend just started playing Pokemon Platinum. I'm tempted to play along with her, but knowing that HG/SS isn't that far out makes me hesitant. I remember how similar the games are.

I think I'll tough it out until March. Then play HG/SS along with her.

Yeah the problem with replaying older titles right before new releases is that you get burnt out to do it all over again. I'm going to hold off as well for SoulSilver, and hopefully have the motivation to beat it.
 
I tried going for Feebas and gave up after the first two rows. Then I proceeded to get Qwilfish on my 4th try and Wobbuffet on my 2nd try.

Man, if only I knew I was so lucky today. The day's gone in 3 hours, I shouldn't even bother with Feebas now.

Edit: Absol super quickly. I swear to fucking god this game is cheating. Some days 10% is like 0.01% and sometimes it's like 70%.

Edit 2: Another TWO Loudreds (evolving one), straight after Absol. Dear diary, I feel the game is mocking me.

Make sure to use a Heart Scale to teach it Wood Hammer after it evolves. Then wreck everything with that and Earthquake.
 
Alright. I have the second badge but I think I'm going to do some exploring/some side stuff before I start actively pursuing the third badge.

My pokemon so far are:
- Grotle: lv 22
- Staravia: lv 23
- Luxio: lv 22

I'm enjoying it so far.

Currently training my team for the seventh gym, composed of Pikachu, Sneasle, Gabite, Infernape, Staraptor, and Gyrados. I don't like most of them, just wanted to try playing with Pokemon I didn't like for a change from the usual Alakazam or Dragonite :lol
 
lol shit I'm in my low 20s and I still don't ever get tired of hearing about people's pokemon and who they chose as their starter. I need a DS.
 
Every time this thread gets bumped I get this pang of want. March cannot come quick enough. And weirdly enough, it's not solely because of FFXIII.
 
It's less wanting the game and having my girlfriend and best friend start Platinum within the last two weeks.

I'd start it with them, but I know I'd be burnt out by the time HG/SS releases. And I really don't wanna sour my Soul Silver run.

I'm still debating about who should be my sixth pokemon: Tangrowth(Might use it for the leagure), Gabite(if I can catch one), or Gyrados. Oh, Just preordered soul silver and WKC today, can't wait :)

I'm 23 and I still love the shit out of pokemon. I have to admit though, sometimes I miss the days of the less complex pokemon games like original red and blue. The whole breeding with natures and EV training and such it getting out of hand IMO. There's getting to be too many variables, and then there are ones that are out of your control and then there are ones that you can't even see and... yeah I think you can see where I'm going with this.

But, having said that, I'ma go pre-order Soul Silver, lol. Can't wait. It's weird having so many good games coming out in the beginning of the year. Usually this is when I play catch up on all the games I got for the holidays and such.

Seriously. Really going to take some restraint to wait for price drops...whats worse is that it stretches all the way into summer :lol And I also wish they would at least give a small graphic indicator for EV points.
 
I had a couple of crazy hardcore stretches with the franchise. So damn addictive.

As someone that really enjoys the end metagame, I wish they would vamp up the stats on some of the neat but totally underpowered Pokemons.

The only shiny I've seen in the hundreds of hours I've put in all the games was a shiny Koffing in FireRed that Selfdestructed in my face after one turn. The only one I really want is a black Charizard.

Same. I have no fucking clue why Gamefreak has no interest in making the game a thousand times more balanced, especially since it would be so easy for them to do so
 
yesterday i finally told myself "fuck it!" and preordered soul silver. now it feel like back then when i was waiting for silver...so awesome:D
 
Ok, here's the thing: my old friend and I are looking to relive the glory days and head out on a quest to be the best. I think he's made up his mind and will invest in a DS to play Pokemon with me... it is his real test!

Question is, do we go for Platinum or wait for HG/SS? Plat looks very good, and it'll keep us both happy as we haven't played since G/S on the Gameboy. But I was wondering about the variety issue of us each having the same game, and if we wouldn't be better off each having one of the unique new versions.

Another thing to take into account is the release date. Is it March for EU? If so, that's dangerously close to Monster Hunter Tri, which we'll both be totally engrossed in forevermore.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

If it comes down to only being able to choose one over the other, DEFINATELY go with HG/SS. They are leaps and bounds more feature-packed and polished than Platinum. Platinum is still definately worth playing, especially if you plan on catching em all (i.e. want the cool legendaries) in HG/SS.

I'd maybe wait for HG/SS, because if you haven't played since the GB days it will be an absolutely amazing experience for you. Platinum would still be good, but if you've waited ten years you might as well wait the extra couple months and make your return to pokeymanz a glorious one

It will probably be my GOTY, maybe rivaling Galaxy 2

I picked up Heart Gold around two weeks ago, my previous game was Pokemon Red.

As I haven't played Platinium I can't really tell how HG/SS compares, but not having played a Pokemon game for almost 10 years and then getting into Heart Gold is one of my best modern gaming experience. I am totally engulfed by the game and I think the nostalgia factor is a lot bigger than it would have been if I had picked up Platinum. It's the sequel to the previous game I played, and it seems to be(by a quick glance) that regional pokedex of Johto(HG/SS) is better suited for my nostalgia than Sinnoh's pokedex(Pt), while you are sitll able to get pretty much all pokemons in either game anyway.

Oh and then there' the awesome PokeWalker, and so much other stuff. Read my impression here, my post should be the current last one(779)
 
I've been making an attempt at RNG abuse for the first time tonight and just caught a Timid Ditto with a 31 IV in every stat. Awesome.

It's kind of creepy when it works. I was using the coin flip Poketch app to make sure I had the right frame delay, and it's surreal to be able to predict whether heads or tails is coming next.
 
Hey guys, yesterday I started burrowing some spheres, and today when I got into the Underground again, the walls around the place are FULL with sparkles.

What the hell? Is this some trick to get more diggable walls? Why wasn't I made aware of this?
 
Just beat the elite four on my Ruby cartridge. Had 6 pokemon all leveled up to around levels 50-53:

Skarmory
Sceptile
Sharpedo
Hariyama
Alakhazam
Groudon

Took me a lot of grinding at the end. Leveling most of those guys up together really kept them all low and a bit weak, and I had to grind a lot before some gyms. Felt great to finally beat the elite four with the team though.

Do I need to finish my pokedex to unlock latios or latias? Ruby version btw.
 
Thank you EzLink and Metroid Killer for your advices! I think I will inform my buddy of the imminent arrival of HG/SS, and see if we can wait it out until March.

If it's more suited to nostalgia then definitely sounds good. I don't remember how big Johto is, and have no idea how many more Pokemon there are these days, but it sounds pretty big.

One more question: are the only extra creatures in Platinum the legendaries? If there's a bunch more that won't be available in HG/SS then maybe it's worth getting anyway?

Yeah the underground man explains this I think. Burying spheres promotes stuff to appear in the surrounding walls. it's the only way to feasibly farm shards.
