Pokemon Game Appreciation Thread

I picked up Heart Gold around two weeks ago, my previous game was Pokemon Red.

As I haven't played Platinium I can't really tell how HG/SS compares, but not having played a Pokemon game for almost 10 years and then getting into Heart Gold is one of my best modern gaming experience. I am totally engulfed by the game and I think the nostalgia factor is a lot bigger than it would have been if I had picked up Platinum. It's the sequel to the previous game I played, and it seems to be(by a quick glance) that regional pokedex of Johto(HG/SS) is better suited for my nostalgia than Sinnoh's pokedex(Pt), while you are sitll able to get pretty much all pokemons in either game anyway.

I nearly did the same, last pokemon I played was Blue and then decided on a binge to see what they were doing with Pokemon. Picked up Diamond (because seriously Pearl? And Dialga looks awesome) and was literally floored with how far they went with the game.
I mean there's so much to keep up now.
I remember finishing Blue without any problem, but damn this one is considerably tougher (or I made very bad choices), I expected to get a badge every 10 hours like in Blue..... 60hours past and still trying to find the 5th one...

And now looking at this and the Soul Silver thread I must say, DAMN YOU gaf I'll have to pick Soul Silver now (well the cold color game like always -_-).

For thoses playing the new games, is it following Gold & Silver or is it like Fire Red/Leaf Green were you follow a different trainer going the same path as Blue/Red? (I mean there's still the stuffs about the Leviathan looking pokemon and all?)

Eh? Fr/Lg were remakes of R/B.

In what terms?
Story, pacing, events or even the presence and how you can catch the legendaries, did any of this changed from Gold/Silver?
Or is it pretty much Gold/Silver AS IS + stuffs found in DPPt + Pokewalker?

Pokemon games are so intrinsically linked to my childhood that i'm basically unable to be objective with them, as everytime i play them i am filled with such warm and fuzzy feelings of nostalgic joy, joy outside of the pleasure of playing such a tightly designed and fantastic RPG. I don't care that they never change, i mean i'd love them to try new things, but i will buy every new version day 1.

I remember Fr/Lg as being pretty much straight up remakes of R/B, so probably the last thing you said.

I didn't follow much of Pokemon but I remember that in Blue/Red you controlled another trainer than the one in the remakes
(that surprised me like when I heard that in Gold you fought Blue or something)
.

Not that it's important or anything but it's just the-more-you-know.gif

Unless you played as the new female character (introduced in Gen III so that girls could play too, they had to put it in the remakes) you still played as Red and the plot/characters were exactly the same.
And you fight both Blue and Red in G/S.

You mean Blue ;),
I thought it was made clear that you played as other trainers going on the footsteps of the one in Red/Blue... well that's cleared up I guess.
Anyway that just mean, I don't have to track down a copy of Leaf Green nor Silver and can take on Saffire (or Crystal) and just go on Soul Silver.
Thanks

I caught a bunch of Slakoths today and wondering which one to train, here the the natures: calm, relaxed, gentle, rash, mild. calm, naive

Would make use of it's attack and go with Naive if you can't get Adamant.:D

Same for me, Pokemon is the only game I've always stayed loyal to from the beginning and I don't see myself not ever getting a new main game on Day 1. I was planning to quit gaming a few years ago, but ended up buying a DS before the release of Diamond and getting heavily back into gaming because of it. I feel trapped.:lol

No.

Blue is Gary Oak. Think of it that way if you're gonna be crazy like this. (Manga =/= Games)

And Fire Red/Leaf Green are not parallel dimensions with different trainers, its a retcon of the games where you replay Red's adventure again, but this time people have knowledge of other regions.

If I'm reading this correctly, you're sixty hours into Diamond and you still don't have the fifth badge? I'm about 28 hours into my game and I already have five badges!

I don't know/follow the anime or the mangas,
it just seemed that Fr/Lg were in the same dimension just different trainers 5 years later following after the events in Blue/Red/Yellow/whatever
like Gold/Silver to Red/Blue

Yep I'm really slow in this one, I try to catch most pokemons on my first way, and try to level up more than 20 pkmn so that I can face all situations

Wow, I can't imagine playing for 60 hours and only having 5 badges :lol. I suppose a lot of it depends on what you're doing in the game since there is A LOT of stuff you can end up wasting time on. Makes sense since you're catching and raising about 20? I always just stick with five. Train a sixth when I get to the elite four, usually caught on Victory Road. I prefer to finish the game before training/catching most pokemon though, finished Diamond in about 13 hours.:lol

Exactly the same for me. I'm on my way to the 5th badge in HG, but my playtime is 80+

Wow, 20, that's.. really ambitious. I could never do that, I always only level 4 or 5 (HM slave doesn't get any leveling :D )

Just preordered HeartGold (yeah that's right!) and I am planning to get every Pokémon in it. Now I'll start by catching all the legendaries and all other Pokés I can in Platin, Breeded a Hunter Pokémon for that reason which I am leveling right now. Hope it will do well :)

:lol :lol :lol
what's funny is that I played just like that in Blue and I ended up at the 60h mark, having only rare pkmn and mewtwo to get.
And I just fired it up....actually my team is composed of 30 pkmn at average lvl 23...
I'm usually a pretty decent rpg player (heck usually rpgs end at the 50 hrs mark with chars at lvl 60 or something) but this one is stumping me with all the info to remember...
I feel like I should have used the fire starter here (fire aint common so far).
Worse still I started the game 21 august 2008, but I feel I can finish it in the coming months (if crystal bearers don't suck me up in its world)

Oh and I never use any objects to make pkmn learn more moves (unless necessary), heck I just realized yesterday I had no one with Fly :lol (Teleport to town)

I don't see it that way, to me its a necessity, only lvling up 4/5 pkmn feels like a challenge to me, I don't think I could do that (oh and no breeding until I understand why 2 pkmn can breed and 2 others can't)

Wait, heart gold has growlithe? I knew i made the right choice this time!

Since we are talking about game time, has any of you guys maxed out the time recording? As in reached 999:59 hours? I did this for Pokemon Diamond after a year of countless breeding, battling, and grinding at Battle Tower.

I had about 300 in Pearl and 380 so far in Plat, and I thought that was a bit much.

I mean really, I've apparently been averaging over an hour a day since Plat's release.

About 400+ hours in Diamond, but only 50 in Platinum. Though Platinum probably wont see much play since im just getting Pokemon that I might want to train/transfer to Soul Silver. I spent alot of time with Diamond because of EV training, battling, PBR, and trades.

Heres hoping Soul Silver and Heart Gold bring in enough new and old fans so I can spend 400+ there as well :lol

I've got 670(!) hours logged into diamond, but at least 100 of those are just from me leaving it open while I do other things. Platinum is at 66 hours. I haven't battled anyone since I started working on my new team which was AGES ago and I still not finished. it's probably outdated by now! :lol

Same here, which is why im glad I labled some of the boxes "in train", "battlebx", and "EV reduce". Really hard to remember what you were doing/aiming for after putting down a Pokemon game for so long.

My boxes:

#1 through #11: various Pokemon in national Pokedex order, most of these boxes are full
#12-13: fully trained competitive-use Pokemon
#14: extra legendaries, mostly suboptimal natures/stats
#15: main legendary box, completely full
#16: Unown box, every Unown form
#17: breeding box, 20+ Dittos and a Slugma
#18: catcher box, 20+ synchronizers, a lv 100 Breloom and a couple of Absols

This box talk made me realize it's going to be a pain for me and many people to transfer pokemon over once HG/SS comes out.

My Boxes:

1-16) various Pokemon assorted by type, similar types are doubled up.
17) 8 Dittos, a Slugma and 6 Pokemon lvl40+ with the pickup ability.
18) Fully trained competitive Pokemon (some are missing a move or two), nearly full.

You know it :lol

Oh and for future reference, still have a Biohazard box full of Pokerus infected monsters.

I have a 32 Scizor right now that I would like to improve. I've read a lot about EVs but I don't think I completely understand how it works.

I'm looking into a choice band build. That's where I want to end up with him.

Since I've leveled him up normally is it still possible for me to reach this build? Can I use berries or something to wipe his stats or will I need to breed a scyther and start all over?

Ya use the berries. Every battle you do in the game gets EV points until you reach your 510 max or reach the 255 max for each stat. I don't remember the exact name for berries but try to use all the available ones on all stat types to make sure.

I would just use a new bred one just to make sure you get the EV points right.

Man, i need to buy a DSi, i'm getting the pokemon itch. But i doubt i'll ever become so savy in pokemons as you guys.

I still remember how many hours i spent on Red and Blue... the Pallet Town theme still brings a tear to my eye. It had an exploration feeling like no other game i've played. My first and best rpg.

Epic bump, I know, but totally legal.

I was thinking again about how much I appreciate these games with the new installments.

Pokemon Black/White are out in Japan now, and they look to still take the same formula I know and love, and perfected/polished it.

The Pokemon finally breathe!
The music is awesome.
The map is awesome.
The story is deeper.
+Season cycles

The game is shorter(?) :(

I can't wait to see what comes next though.

Personally, I predict Gray Version on the 3DS with the same game but with update backgrounds for battles, trainer and gym leader rematches, and of course the standard new form for the new legendary and little additions like trainer animation or something like that.

And then, it's all but guaranteed that a Ruby/Sapphire remake will come. But how will Nintendo justify the remake of a GBA game on the 3DS? Maybe this is why they plotted out the timeline the way they did.

R/S/E = R/B/Y
Then 3 years later/./
G/S/C = D/P/Pt

So maybe the R/S remakes will feature Kanto? And then Pt remake will feature Johto? Who knows that they'll do, but with a system that powerful, it would really be unacceptable to keep things as they are.

Edit: Check this tune out, I love it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m76GM4CvIls

I tried my very first Pokemon game earlier this year (Heart Gold), played it for a few hours, but got the distinct feeling that I was playing it wrong (leveling up my first Pokemon too much maybe?). I stopped and haven't been back to it in many months. I'll probably give it another shot in the near future. I would love for another game series to hook me as hard as the Dragon Quest games have.

bump

I have finished the main story of my first Pokemon game ever, Black!

Now i liked it well enough but not sure if now i should just keep doing some post game content or play another Pokemon game alltogether? I am not in it for the competition just for the general experience of the game/main story ...

Which game would you guys recommend i play next? I have Heart Gold for DS and Diamond as well (got em both cheap on a sale) hmm?
