I kind of grew out of Pokemon after G/S came out and after I got over that the biggest concern that I've heard is that they haven't done much new. Most of them have been remakes since then too. I might as well wait for the next real generation to see if they add some new ingredients to the formula.

If you mean remakes of Gen 1 and Gen 2, only 4 games out of the past 10 have been that.

Ruby Sapphire Emerald and Diamond Pearl Platinum are all new games and add a healthy dose of new stuff, Heart Gold Soul Silver and Fire Red Leaf Green were the remakes. So half and half.

There's been four remakes and eight main games since GS... unless you mean the third versions.

And you really can't knock them until you play them, the series has progressed since G/S. I second the recommendation of getting HeartGold or SoulSilver.
