Just confirmed on the official Pokemon site during the official announcement that Pokkén is to be at EVO.

US Nationals and EVO both lead up to the Pokkén World Championships, which are being housed at the Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco this year

Evo will be one of the big events in the Pokkén Tournament Championship Series, where players will compete for prizes, as well as invitations and travel awards to the Pokkén Tournament World Championships this August in San Francisco, California! Also, look forward to a Pokkén Tournament Championship Series event at the Pokémon US National Championships.

Great to read.

Hopefully is a great sign to show that TPC is interested in supporting and cultivating Pokken (and its expansions/sequels) for the long haul.

Stuff like this is why I'm glad the Pokémon Company exists. It's nice having official tournaments.

The Pokémon World Championships will be really hype this year with the new Gen VI meta and Pokken.

TPC dropping a Poketon every damned day wow

"Pokemon's at evo, the superbowl, here's some VC releases, a detective game's coming out in a few weeks and its episodic, here's some new pokken characters, some pokemon distributions, have a limited edition console too. Pokemon Z? What the fuck is that?"

The difference between Smash and Pokémon is that Sakurai and friends don't make their game with the competitive scene in mind.
This statement is funny considering the main competitive Pokémon meta is a complete mess this generation.

Pokkén is made by the Tekken and Soul Calibur people, though, so it makes sense they have a competitive focus in mind.

They're really pushing this game. Hopefully it gets long-term support and updates so it can become a staple at Worlds.

It really isn't. And gamefreak actually does a lot of stuff to try and make the meta balanced, they just don't patch mid generation, which means balancing has to be about prediction rather than reaction, and the army of competitive pokemon players is always going to end up winning that battle because of more time and people. I mean you can point to M-Rayquaza, but it's largely irrelevant as it's not usually allowed in competitive play, and it's only absurdly broken in singles, so even in a year like this where they're allowing it into VGC, it's actually not the most popular choice by any means

Man they are pushing Pokken hard, I am actually interest in running some tournaments myself.

Going to be the best Chandelure in México.

Singles is not their main focus so whatever. They clearly shown they couldn't care less about that format.

On the other hand, the Doubles meta while far from perfect is a lot healthier and more balanced because that's what they actually care about.

Wasn't For Glory mode a realization that they are considering that audience?

Not really.

It was never meant to be a thing that showed that Sakurai was going to cater to the competitive audience anymore than usual. It's just another option present for those who want to use it.

TPC is putting in work. Pokemon is going to have an insane year...and you are going to like it. Or else.

Other franchises wish they got this much love...
<cue metroid sad cake pic)

Trying to think of people who used to play in some of the old Pokemon tournaments and now play fighting game tournaments. Sixfortyfive, yeb, and usea wanna clean up???

I'm hoping to check out US Nationals, Worlds, and maybe Evo this year so gimme a shout if you show up :)

The third version game is definitely behind schedule, but I suspect they held it back specifically for the 20th anniversary. If we do end up getting it this year we should be hearing something about it real soon.

As far as I'm concerned Doubles is the only format that really matters, but at the same time I wish GF would show a bit more discretion on how their changes/additions affect Singles. If only so the format doesn't get muddled even further by Smogon-style bandaid "fixes"

Uhhhh... I mean, he's clearly been balancing the game with comp very much in mind, especially the fixes to doubles balance.

He may not have made the base with high level comp in mind, but the upkeep certainly has.

I don't think it's behind schedule at all. We always have gap years.

They also care about 3v3 Singles, but I don't think that's a mess either. 6v6 though? Hahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahaha

That said, AlphaZealot, the owner of Smashboards and the current head of Organized Play at The Pokemon Company International, is probably the main person behind this. This series should be enjoyable to watch.

I need to know what this prize money going to be. There's going to be three big tournaments for it this year?
Evo is likely to be prize pot based on participation. US Nationals and Worlds are likely to be scholarship prizes like previous years. That would mean first at Worlds is $10,000 and Nationals is $5000 unless they plan to increase prizing again this year.

Scholarship, like paying for college? Fuck, but what if the winner is already done with school?

This is awesome news. Are US nationals still in Indianapolis? I guess it makes sense to be since EVO is more west coast. I hope getting into Worlds isn't hard by just going to EVO.

That's certainly a cool thing to see. It's great to know that TPC is putting quite a bit of support behind Pokkén. Here's hoping the game can build a decently sized dedicated community.

At least they are putting in some good support for this game. Curious to see if the community jumps into it and sticks with it though.
