Zane, a 5-year-old bloodhound, was found dead around 5 p.m. at Jerahmy Williams' home in Rockdale County.

According to police, the dog had been in the car for nearly 10 hours. Williams said after getting off of work at 6 a.m. he fell asleep after feeling sick. He thought he had taken Zane to the kennel but then realized he had left him in the car. Police chief Gene Wilson believes it was an accident.

Accident or not, the dog died because of him. Should definitely get charges. If anyone else did this exact same thing, they would receive charges.

Williams is currently on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation. Possible charges Williams could be facing include reckless conduct and cruelty to animals.

People get charges even when their dog doesn't die.

Different circumstances for different cases, most cases are people being dumb asses and going shopping for two hours leaving their animals in the car, not being sick and passing out when you get home after work during a night shift.

]Piece of shit cop, ugh he should be punished

How will they spin this..... The dog killed himself in that vehicle?

Are you guys just going out of your way to be outraged about cops or something?

You were clear enough mind to make it home safely, you should be clear enough minded to make sure you don't leave your K-9 in the car.

The dog was in danger of dying and indeed died. When was being sleepy and sick an excuse for getting an animal killed? He was responsible for the dog, so he has to take responsibility for it's death.

Would still be his fault.

Not sure why he'd be exempt of charges when the average citizen, under the exact circumstances, would have to pay..even spend a night in jail, in some states. Nasty way to go..

It was an accident, and you don't know the state of mind he was in after a night shit and being sick. Just because someone drove home doesn't mean they are "clear of mind". I've driven home before and simply walked in and collapsed on my bed, not exactly unusual.

Oh hey, something omitted from the OP for no reason.

I didn't say he was "clear of mind".. I said he was "clear minded enough". Huge difference. Accidents happen. I agree. But if you accidentally kill a human, you better believe you will still be in jail.

Nobody says that he wanted to kill this dog, it was obviously an accident, But being an accident doesn't make it ok and he certainly shouldn't just walk from there. You hit a child with a car because you were sick and sleepy. Wouldn't be ok, no matter if you were sleepy or sick or if you actually wanted to hit that particular kid. he was responsible for the dog and he let it die.

Waaayyyyyment.... let me get this straight.

You're defending this cop?

If it was an accident, then yea I feel bad for someone who accidentally killed their dog.

Yea, but we're not talking about dangerous driving, we're talking about falling asleep after a long nights work after you get home.

There are people that have been drunk driving for years that have never gotten in an accident. Sometimes you're just lucky enough to get home without accidents. Getting home isn't an identifier that he wasn't sick enough to genuinely forget the dog.

I feel bad for the dog, not the irresponsible cop.

how about this amazing concept that I feel bad for both? That I feel bad for the owner who accidentally kill his dog and I can feel empathy with that as a fellow dog owner, and trying to imagine myself in his shoes if I somehow did the same thing and what I would feel?

Crazy concept, I know.

This guy should definitely be punished but yeah it isn't exactly comparable to accidentally killing a human adult or child... It was a dog.

Ok, how about this: swap the dog with a child. Poor, poor cop. It's called criminal negligence and it's not ok, no matter how sleepy you are. It's your responsibility, it's a lost life and you should take the punishment for failing it.

Regardless of who you feel for, he should be held responsible for his actions. This is a silly argument.

Nobody gets charged for hitting a dog on the road.

A dog doesn't equal a child, wtf

Because that's not negligence, that's generally an actual, legitimate accident. This might be something the guy feels bad about, but that doesn't mean it wasn't the result of negligence. Being too tired to remember to take you dog out of a car doesn't excuse it. If it was a kid, he'd be in serious shit. Well, if he weren't a cop he would be.

Really? Man, the USA are rough.
Plus, it's his dog, it's his responsibility. He was to care for it and let it die through negligence.

A dog doesn't equal a child, wtf
*rolleyes*
Are you doing this on purpose?
Why on earth are people using a child as an analogous example?
I got a name, nobody else used a child as example. And I used it because the dog was his responsibility, a living being he let die through negligence, Since TheLostBigBoss didn't seem to understand what my problem with that is, I used an example he might understand.

He was cognitively impaired through no fault of his own. I wouldn't call it negligence. I'd call it an accident.

Also, Kerned used the child analogy.

Lets not forget this was a police dog. Ask any dog handler in the police force or military. That dog was a cop too. Raised and Trained by tax payer dollars.

Killed by irresponsibility.

I don't know anywhere in the world you'd get charged for hitting a dog on the road. Animals don't understand traffic laws.

Come on, dude. It's a pretty loaded example.

No, the USA has sensible laws about roaming animals on the road and how dangerous it is to try avoid animals on the road in snap second actions that can easily injure other people, or the fact that animals run on the road cause their are animals and don't understand the concept of a moving vehicle that well.

The link said he could be charged and is suspended during the investigation, if he does then fine. But the OP left it out because he clearly wanted to be outraged at a cop because he's a cop, just like a few other posters in this thread.

I would argue he shouldn't be charged due to him clearly being tired after and sick after work. If it were different circumstances I would feel different.

When the animal is a police animal, the penalty is supposed to be more severe. In this case, let's see if there is a penalty at all.
There won't be.

Well, it very well may be negligence in this case but I have a hard time believing where you live people get charged with accidentally hitting animals on the road. Courts would be flooded.

I do agree that it was negligence, and that he should get punished. I just don't think accidentally killing a child is an analogous example. It was a dog. Someone was posting "But if you accidentally kill a human, you better believe you will still be in jail." Really? He will not get jail time over this.

What's that mean? He should.

And it is an assumption because no matter how hard you believe I did that intentionally, it's not actually true.

I'll add it in right now.

EDIT: You should go through my post history to see how "biased" I am against cops.

That's because your example(s) are loaded and either

A) Simply not applicable to the situation
B) Lack an understanding of common sense (and US law apparently)

Since TheLostBigBoss didn't seem to understand what my problem with that is, I used an example he might understand.

And also horribly condescending, which is pretty funny given how you think people get charged for hitting dogs on the road.

If a layman hits a police K9 aren't they going to get charged? I believe if you kill the police K9 you can catch a murder charge in some states.

No matter the "reason", you and I were going to catch a charge for killing a police K9. If this guy doesn't get charged it's just gonna be another example of the double standards that law enforcement have and get away with.

He should be prosecuted. The military takes this sort of thing seriously, so the police should as well. Other K9 officers have been charged before.
