I've finally moved into the middle of the green (previously just libertarian-light green). It probably has to do with my changing views on class and culture. The Green Party is looking more attractive now.

Karl Rove could post that after any major Democrat speech. Diatribe.

I'm just stunned that U.S. let's it's infrastructure decline and refuses to invest to road/bridges/whatever to alleviate unemployment. Federal spending on low-medium wage jobs is guaranteed to stimulate the economy, as most money goes to household consumption anyway...

edit: I can't believe that I wrote "Karl Rove could POST THAT" :D

You really ought to hang out here more before posting such things then. Not enough face palms.

PS. Once again, I'm near the center.

i've pretty much stayed the same.
Economic Left/Right: -1.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.62

socially relaxed, economically close to center, depending on my mood.

Well, someone has to protect and love the state.

When I was a younger man, I hung with a lot of discordians. I suspect if I'd taken this then, I'd have been pegged to the bottom of the graph. Since then, I've come to accept that a little stability in government is a good thing, which requires a little authoritarianism. But just a little. Just enough so the wheels don't come off the cart.

Goodness, I nearly placed in the right wing. Again. Crisis averted.

Ah, the political compass. I'm like -7, -8 on it, last time I checked.

By the way: As I listen to the coverage of the speech from last night, (I don't get to watch anything live anymore, damnit.) I find one particular part of the speech particularly telling.

That was the line the last time EGTRRA was set to expire. It will be the line the next time around. EGTRRA isn't going anywhere.
Perhaps they will increase the rates on the high-end cuts? Of course, they reneged on the previous vote, so I suspect not. Sadly, you are probably correct.

Another good idea I have seen floated around is already being done at the state level (and has received bipartisan support at the national level):

Given the current environment of our polity, I think that program merits consideration. Otherwise, a robust work-share program, similar to the Netherlands or Germany, would be ideal. Rather, it would have been ideal in January 2009. Had it been included then, it would have mitigated the deterioration of skills engendered by long-term unemployment.

Good speech, but largely irrelevant considering

1) the bill will never be passed
2) if these are such good ideas, why weren't they implemented before when dems controlled both houses
3) it sounds like a smaller stimulus bill, and the public has already determined the stimulus did not work

Obama always gives good speeches, that's nothing to be surprised over. The problem is actually implemented his pie in the sky bullshit.

So do you consider what he wants to do to be bullshit?

Congrats you are technically more to the right and authoritarian than I am. lol

Has anyone else ever developed another one of these tests? I'd be interested in what the deviation between that said test and this would be.

lool, weiners!

(CNN) – Just four days before voting day, a new poll showed Republicans may turn out a big upset in a special congressional election in New York City to replace former Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner.

GOP candidate Bob Turner, a businessman, now holds a six-point advantage over Democratic state assemblyman David Weprin in the contest in the ninth congressional district, according to Siena Research Institute poll released Friday. Turner’s margin over Weprin is within the survey’s sampling error.

Was that cock tweet worth it, weiner? you fucking fuck!

Couple Huntsman tidbits:

Another shakeup of his campaign staff.
This source said Huntsman is “running on fumes” and that the candidate had to put $500,000 of his money into the campaign recently to help make payroll.

Pulling out of Florida to focus on New Hampshire:
David announced that the Huntsman campaign is reassigning staff from the Florida campaign headquarters to New Hampshire, a move reflective of the diminished importance of Florida’s “P5”, and the campaign’s focus on success in New Hampshire.

“New Hampshire is a vital part of our strategy, and we want to ensure we have the best possible team in place to spread Gov. Huntsman’s message of serious solutions in the critical ‘First in the Nation’ primary state,” David said

You wonder if he can even make it that far.

Rick-Perry-a-modern-day-G-007.jpg

Name: Galileo

Age: 447

Isn't that a bit old to be governor of Texas? No, Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer, philosopher and father of physics (although critics say his best work is behind him). You're thinking of Rick Perry, Republican presidential candidate and apparent fan of the Renaissance man. Perry deployed the "Galileo Gambit" in Wednesday night's TV debate.

The "Galileo Gambit"? An argument commonly used by creationists and other cranks, which says that if everyone else thinks your ideas are stupid it means you're almost probably definitely a genius. The name is a reference to the scholar's persecution and trial at the hands of the Catholic Church for his heretical suggestion that the earth goes around the sun.

What's Perry's heresy? He's a climate change doubter. Asked about his views by debate host Brian Williams, he said: "The science is not settled on this. The idea that we would put America's economy at jeopardy based on scientific theory that's not settled yet to me is just nonsense. Just because you have a group of scientists who stood up and said here is the fact. Galileo got outvoted for a spell."

He sounds pretty confident that he'll eventually be proved right. How endearing. Did Galileo ever use his gambit? No, but then he had the advantage of actually being right.

They're both victims of persecution though … In a way, yes. Galileo was put on trial by the Roman Inquisition and sentenced to house arrest for almost 10 years until his death, while Perry has been plagued by pesky scientists wielding facts.

Facts? Considered a form of psychological abuse by some on the Christian right.

It sounds like Galileo was lucky to escape with his life. Yes, unlike the 234 people executed under Perry's governorship.

So is Perry a genius? During a severe drought this April, Perry proclaimed a three-day "prayer for rain". Conditions worsened.

How else are they similar? Both have a keen interest in science. Galileo's many contributions include discovering the moons of Jupiter with a telescope he invented, establishing the heliocentric model of the solar system, developing a theory of tides and improving the compass, pump, cannon and numerous other devices. Perry has a degree in farm animals (or "animal science" as it's known). A "firm believer in intelligent design", he believes climate change is a great con conceived by scientists with support from the media, and says that while he is "no expert on the 'nature versus nurture' debate", gay people "should simply choose abstinence anyway".

Goodness. How can we tell them apart? Poke them. The one that responds is Perry. Probably.

Do say: Did the earth move for you too?

Don't say: Nobody expects the the Roman Inquisition!!

I liked the speech. He should do more speeches. Not in front of Congress or the press but in front of the working class people. It's necessary to keep hammering and explaining what's going on and what needs to be done.

I like this part the most (not aimed at you this part though, PhoenixDark):
Tax cuts for middle income workers were less effective while tax cuts for the wealthy were deemed the least effective.

Very appropriate. They are both religious charlatans preaching apocalyptic nonsense. They both deserve all the ridicule they get and more.

I figured I had a few minutes to waste, but what a moronic test. Was it written by someone over at the Daily Kos? It's highly geared towards one side, and its questions had the simplicity below that of a similar test I remember taking in a 9th grade civics class years ago. Then again, I suppose opinions with "Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, Strongly Disagree" correlations approach the maximum-level of nuance for the average person.

Anyway, here ya go:

And yes, I did not take this seriously and was intentionally trying to get a dot in the upper right corner.

Well I was going to say it's not the Euro, the German Constitutional Court upheld the funding of their bailout a couple of days ago, but perhaps not.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/44451534

European Central Bank Executive Board member Juergen Stark is resigning his post in what sources say is a protest against its policy of buying bonds to help troubled euro zone debtor states.

The news highlights the size of the split at the ECB over the bond-buy plan and the extreme tension between its policymakers, who have been at the centre of the policy response to the euro zone debt crisis.

Markets in Europe and the US skidded on the news as investors worried about the leadership at the eurozone's top monetary authority. European stocks closed sharply lower, while US shares tumbled further

The full article is at the link above. Its pretty detailed about the ECB's issues

I also suspect some lukewarm reaction to Obama's speech, but the Euro seems to be driving it.

Remember when Obama stated in his speech we dont got 14 months for the ballot box?

Well if my friend states is true about Greece, and the Euro we got only 3 and half months. Japan just suddenly got a whole lot of cash and my friend in the Forex is wondering how long before the rest of the shoe drops.
