Trump tells confidants U.S. will quit Paris climate deal

LOL @ moderating forces Jared and Ivanka.

President Trump has privately told multiple people, including EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, that he plans to leave the Paris agreement on climate change, according to three sources with direct knowledge.

Publicly, Trump's position is that he has not made up his mind and when we asked the White House about these private comments, Director of Strategic Communications Hope Hicks said, "I think his tweet was clear. He will make a decision this week."

Why this matters: Pulling out of Paris is the biggest thing Trump could to do unravel Obama's climate policies. It also sends a stark and combative signal to the rest of the world that working with other nations on climate change isn't a priority to the Trump administration. And pulling out threatens to unravel the ambition of the entire deal, given how integral former President Obama was in making it come together in the first place.

Caveat: Although Trump made it clear during the campaign and in multiple conversations before his overseas trip that he favored withdrawal, he has been known to abruptly change his mind — and often floats notions to gauge the reaction of friends and aides. On the trip, he spent many hours with Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, powerful advisers who back the deal.

Of everyone involved with the rise of Trump, the people who shrugged their shoulders and said, "Both sides are the same...whatever." make me rage the most.

Trump is literally doing shit that will destroy the world so I hope those people I mentioned are super thrilled with their protest votes. They couldn't even be fucking bothered to vote to have the House or Senate act as a barrier to his insanity.

Question: Can the US go back into the accords when we get a Democrat president in 2020?

I would imagine it would be pretty fucking tough considering other nations would look at the US as only one election cycle toward another Trump who would trash it. Just make a deal with China and sanction the USA into the fucking stone age.

They could but time is not on our side

I mean, if we pull out, then go back in in 3 years, on that timescale there's not a huge difference. We're still gonna need a pretty radical gamechanger.
If you go back in 3 years. Even then the next GOP president will just leave again. The GOP in its current form is literally a danger to the world.

Well, yeah. But sadly until/unless we can whip up a new set of constitutional amendments to make Republicanism basically illegal we're gonna have to live with the risk and try to moderate it. Rejoining the Paris accords when we can is a better solution than just throwing our hands up and saying "fuckit," but we're still gonna need additional changes.

Luckily a lot of companies plan to still follow the higher standards for a few years, since they assume it will be reversed in 2020, and it most cost effective to just comply now than change things in 3-4 years.

India and China are going overboard with their goals and planned exceed them.

I would expect them to go overboard once this news reaches them and prove to the world.
the sad thing is if we push for this at the state level, the GOP will be just fine with using federalism to snuff it out
Red states are hoping on this too. Texas is a big player when it comes to wind energy and I highly doubt they will stop.

IIRC, there was already a story about Rick Perry looking into mandating a minimum percent of fossil fuel use for the states under the guise of national security.

I want to figure out a way to strip political power from less populated areas, i.e. rural areas. This is going to be a big problem.

I whinny my fervor lowly, for his length is not as great as those of the Hylian war stallions

I think that will be the case for many of these regulation reversals.
Trump's tanking approval ratings and investigation further cement it.

Hope the rest of the world comes together and does everything they can to damage the US. I hate advocating for accelerationism but we don't have time to play fucking games with climate change.

The GOPs jobs vs. climate ideology is among their most stupid idea. Backing out of the Paris Accord will hurt the planet AND jobs. They are all just a gigantic pieces of shit >_<

hmm. i thought bernie's message was a good fit for Montana?

A) Is this a significant number of Montana voters or just a few random people?

B) What about Sanders did they not like? Him or policies he advocated (single-payer?)

These are kind of important questions to answer moving forward. Though IF TRUE it is another data point in the "left-wing populism isn't an auto-counter to right-wing ethnic populism" mantra.

If Montana voters voted for a self confessed journalist beating, anti-retirement Trump Toad, they have much bigger problems than Bernie Sanders's "message," whatever they think it is. The same thing would have happened with Clinton.

Maybe they really hate socialism.

It was and wasn't. I don't think Montanans are huge on Democratic Socialism, but his moderate view on Guns and most of his positions are kind of a fit. He is also polling as the most popular politician in America, so it's hard to imagine he wouldn't help people in most places.

I still think those poll numbers are beyond soft. I honestly wouldn't put a ton of stock in them.

Anecdotally, I've had a lot of success arguing with conservatives on climate policy when I simply ignore any of the moral questions or scientific evidence of climate change, and stick to economic points. Bring up the rapid decrease in price for renewable energy, its inevitability as the global power source of the future. Only question is if we'll be selling our domestic tech or importing from China. Mention the advantage of energy independence/no more foreign oil imports, potential to power your home almost entirely off the grid, etc.

I've been able to convince literally everyone I've talked to about this to support green energy policy. I think it's really a winning issue that dems should always be on the offensive with.

Are you talking to rural people or urban/suburban republicans?

You don't even have to look far.

Look at germanys system(which was created by the US) and you have the perfect system. The US already created a federal democracy that doesn't have the problem the curren(outdated) system has.

The only problem is getting this implemented (I doubt democrats would even agree).

Republicans would basically be split into far right, religious right and centre right parties.

Well, it won't affect me. I have money to deal with it. Poors are so screwed.

I also hate children so I don't care if the world is shit in 50 years.

This is what I've always felt - that the only conservative argument against Green Energy, Renewables, etc. - economics - is bullshit. I don't know exactly what prominent Dems are arguing on this subject but this should always be part of the broader argument. Conservatives have literally no good points on this issue.

Not sure why people were shocked the body slam didn't affect the same party where "taking matters into your own hands" with guns and going into bathrooms to "defend against" trans people is common rhetoric. It sucks but rhe machismo is commonplace in that party.

If feel like economics are what pushing the red states to go for renewables. Texas proves this.

I also got into a verbal altercation with a white supremacist (who may have been high on meth?) outside a Best Buy last night. My friends and I were leaving, and this woman was right outside the doors shouting every disgusting racial slur at people walking by and invoking Trump. Shit like "This is Trump's America, Mexicans get the fuck out! Hang the n*****s"

I told her to "SHUT THE FUCK UP," she started screaming at me, I screamed back. Best Buy employees came outside, my friend called the police, and she walked off while calling me a "n***** loving race traitor." The whole thing was pretty nuts.
