Indeed. Just go find that science vs. religion pic that was in the last thread and that will explain that you have no reason to believe that yours was the narrow point of view....

Epic thread title change!

I'm a pothead atheist.

If what I believe can be called "God" in the strictest sense I guess I'm not an atheist. But I don't believe anything organized faith accomplishes gives a clear connection to that force. It's had some socioeconomic impacts, but I think for the most part it's a disconnect from what it's based on.

I don't hate faith or people that believe in it. I hate those that use it to separate us. And no organized faith is innocent of that.

This will be my first election voting for a Democrat.

You know how in the 80s there were the 'Reagan Democrats' that formed a large block of Reagan's strength. Well now I feel there are gonna be a significant group of 'Obama Republicans' Obama has the potential of being as great as Reagan and Kenndey.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFLuOBsNMZA
Even Obama himself compared this election to the 1980 election of Reagan which changed the tregectory of the nation.

AMERICA GAF, FUCK YEAH!

Today will be so awesome. I also can't wait to tune into Fox News for the epic commentary/meltdowns. Did anyone see Denis Miller on the O'Reilly Factor? Holy shit he's gone absolutely bonkers! He was strangely jovial but also seemed to be having a nervous breakdown. It was some of the weirdest television I've ever seen.

I'm glad you chose to be a part of it.

You're my special Obamacan!

Because you dismissed the importance of religion in this woman's life. I don't particularly care for people voting based on religious views, especially when they are misinformed, but I do respect that everyone votes based on what is important to them in a candidate.

Yeah, I completely agree. I suppose the woman's comment just considerably boiled my blood and I spoke a little brashly.

Perhaps I should elaborate: the woman was interviewed as a follow-up to an interview of her husband, who was an undecided voter and a union member. When asked about what she'd do if her husband votes for Obama or Obama is elected president, she said she'd "pray for the country."

Whatever the case, I was attacking the absolutism of her argument--her complete unwillingness to even consider voting for Obama due simply to fabricated information. She put off a vibe that suggested that, even if she knew the truth of Obama's past, she still wouldn't vote for him (despite the fact that voting for Obama would be in her family's best interest economically.)

I've been reading a lot on the nature of liberalism (as an overarching political ideology) and its emphasis on rationality and pluralism, and from an intellectual standpoint, I'm considerably frightened when I hear people dismiss rationality in favor of something completely unrelated.

Hasn't Dennis Miller always been bonkers? He practically speaks his own language...

Not even a month ago, I didn't think Indiana had any chance of turning blue today. However, in the weeks building up to the election I considered that maybe, just maybe, it could happen. Here's my summary of why I think Indiana could turn blue today.

1. Numbers

2004 GE Results

Bush: 1,479,438 59.94%
Kerry: 969,011 39.26%

2008 Indiana Primary Results

Clinton: 646,233
Obama: 632,035

Total: 1,278,268

The total turnout for the Democratic primary was greater than the number of votes for Kerry in the 2004 GE by more than 300,000 votes. Now that doesn't automatically mean that Obama will get every one of those votes, but it does point to a greater excitement among voters for this election. There were 345,620 new registrations for 2008. That brings me to my next point.

2. Turnout

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/10/20/indiana/
A good article about turning Indiana blue. From that article:

"Ignored for decades by presidential candidates, Indiana in 2004 boasted a dubious distinction -- the lowest turnout rate among registered voters (57.4 percent) of any state in the union."

Indiana last voted for a Democrat in 1964. It has long been a heavily Republican state, and with it's primary being late in the calender it has been ignored by nearly every presidential candidate, Democrat or Republican. But in 2008 with Clinton taking Obama to every state in the primary it finally got attention from the presidential candidates. Obama lost the primary, but by a very slim margin. Obama would go on to win the nomination, but didn't ignore Indiana just because it was a traditionally Republican state. Just like he did with NC and VA. Next point.

3. Ground game

John McCain has ZERO field offices in Indiana. That's right, ZERO. Obama has 44. Barack Obama has been running ads in Indiana for months. John McCain or the RNC didn't start running ads in IN till October. John McCain came to IN once in July, and once Nov. 3rd. Palin made 3 stops in Indiana in October. Obama has made a total of 49 stops this year, including one coming up on election day itself. Biden and Michelle have also made a few on their own.

To sum it up, IN has been desperate for attention during an election. Obama gave IN attention and made McCain and the RNC devote a number of resources to a state that Bush won by 20% in 2004. I think IN will be a razor thin margin. Whether or not Obama wins IN, watch this state closely today.

I can't sleep, I'm so nervous/excited. Probably better this way, 'cause it'll mean I can vote for Obama before going to work.

Obama's gonna win this! I can feel it!

Yeah, he's a nut, but you should have seen him tonight. He had a serious case of the giggles throughout the whole thing, insisted that O'Reilly call him by his first name, and then reached across the desk and gave O'Reilly a hug. He also made a weird comment about voting for McCain because he's a Vietnam vet, and said something to the effect that it's a sad day when a guy like Obama can come out on top of a war hero like McCain. The whole thing was just really, really odd.

Yeah it's hard for me to comprehend how someone as ostensibly educated and eloquent as he can hold such idiotic views. I lost a lot of respect for him after he was so rude to that one guest on his CNBC show. I don't think it's an accident that his career has increasingly dwindled into the margins, from his fairly illustrious SNL/HBO days to the slippery slope of CNBC and now his current career as O'Reilly's shill.

I used to really dig him, too. He was a bright and sharp lad and he could spit hot fiyah. But out of him Osama got exactly what he wanted, and Miller doesn't even realize it. And Miller isn't the only one, either. These sorts don't even understand that they've been owned by the enemy, I think.

:lol

Not to be critizing you guys or anything since it looks like Obama might win, but I'm still somewhat annoyed that the presidential race is even this close between Obama/McCain. Obama should have won with a landslide of 80% or something. But I guess rural NA is a large piece of the country.
And it boggles my mind that the bullshit McCain is saying is actually getting people's attention, and from the stuff I've seen I'm just curious on why people don't call him out on a whole bunch of obvious bullshit lies -- the whole "socialism"-part and all that. And I'm suspecting that Palin's just Sacha Baron Cohens new character or something.

It's not just rural America that McCain has, its also *part* of suburbia. Obama has the cities, McCain has the countryside, the battle was (and will always be) in the suburbs, I would think, because more Americans live in the suburbs than the cities & countryside combined. That battle, Obama has won.

Helps the mods keep track of how many warnings a user has been given to determine if a ban is warranted. It doesn't always say (neutral)...

The reason is that most people don't even know what socialism is. They automatically assume it's a bad thing like communism.

Sweet, thanks! I had been wondering for awhile now...

Man, there's a big fat red "I VOTED" button the front page of Facebook to press and add to the overall tally, but all it's doing is reminding me that I can't vote. So frustrating.

Yeah, which makes it even worse. They use it as some kind of argument against Obama without knowing what they're talking about. I'm sure a lot of them would think it sounded kinda nice if they were told about it without mentioning the name of the ideology, or at least a social liberal version. Again, without using the words "social" and "liberal".

And Obama is a whole lot of not socialism, by the way. Man, if he ran here he'd be running for a right wing party :lol

I'd be interested to see what certain groups in America would say if you explained some of the 'socialist' policies without emotive buzzwords like that. My bet would be that a significant number would like the sound of it.

Anyway, it's 4 November here, so good luck guys. Don't fuck it up this time.

I think it would help if these people realized how many government programs were in a sense "socialist" programs. Just another example of the uninformed masses that inhabit the US....

Agreed - maybe some of these people should ask themselves where the term "SOCIAL Security" comes from...

I'm sure of that too. I mean, a lot of the people protesting it are probably some of the ones who'd benefit the most of a slightly socialized country.

Exactly, which is why it buggs me so much. McCain goes on his rants about socialism and Obama, meanwhile he's backing a whole lot of socialized programs, I'm assuming.
