Anyone else with parents that really don't give a shit about politics?

Wonder if its just because my parents are chinese immigrants. Basically figure your own shit out, don't worry about the government.

Umm. Do you know someone around here who knows my dad better than I do? If he held genuinely racist views, I would know it and I wouldn't say otherwise.

My father is a university professor and internationally highly regarded in his field but he still has truly moronic and borderline racist viewpoints. They don't often come out and if I weren't overly confrontational on certain subjects I would never have known.

My point is academics can still be pretty darn stupid at times.

My mother-in-law hates Trump and can't stand the idea of him as president. She didn't vote. Never does. We tried to convince her. No dice. Frustrating since she continues to go on about how terrible he is.

Not causing friction but .... you had one job!! (Wisconsin too)

I had already stopped celebrating Thanksgiving but if I hadn't then I'd be picking up OT hours during it this year so I could avoid the garbage politics of some my family.

Hmm. Guess we'll just have to take your word on that one!
Yes insulting someone's father is the way to go sure ...

This is my wife and I, except for Christmas. Her entire family voted for Trump, and they have been blasting Facebook with white supremacy ideology since the election. We were supposed to visit, and I really wish we weren't. It's going to be an awful visit. Personally, I'd prefer that we back out entirely, but the tickets were already purchased by her mother and my wife still wants to visit while simultaneously being enraged. A frustrating situation, especially since we have a toddler that has to be around this attitude (and any fights that might arise - can they even be avoided?).

It's such a fucked up situation.

"I don't think Republicans are going to keep doing the things they've been doing for decades now that they have control of all three branches of government"

COME ON

My MiL thinks this. I'm disabled and she sent me a text the other day telling me it will be ok and that they wouldn't slash my disability. She voted for him and I can't help but feel somewhat betrayed.

I'm sure Trump supporting daddy is a big strong man that could take it, right? I mean we in Trump America now, I'm just speaking my mind, telling it how it is! If he catches feels then it's just him being too politically correct.

I think most ppl accept knowledge and wisdom are not the same . For example a great mathematician may not be socially clued in at all . Physicists can be relegious while not completely orthogonal they are disssimilar enough . Having said that knowledge and high education does correlate better with more liberal viewpoints IMO

You gotta be racist as hell or remarkably stupid to actually vote for him. Not surprising someone wouldn't want to be around that.

I wouldn't either.

Knock it off with this nonsense. I know several Trump voters who are neither stupid nor racist. Spend some time outside the echo chamber. The more you call people racist who aren't, the less impact you'll have when trying to stand against actual racists.

Just how are we supposed to tell who's racist & who's not?

I wonder if we couldn't turn this against Trump supporters crying about being persecuted.

Thanksgiving is gonna be iiiinteresting. I know two of my brothers voted against Trump, while my mom, dad, and sister all likely voted for him. Meanwhile I'm sure the vast majority of my extended family either voted Trump or McMullin.

When my grandmother was still alive, she'd hold Thanksgiving at her place, and she would give long, right-wing-fringe-informed diatribes on how Obama was going to destroy the country. It's been quieter since that time, but my dad still challenges me on political topics when I visit home. He knows I've fallen pretty far from the tree, and there's a lot of things we'll never agree on, but I try to keep things civil.

Hence my saying we'll have to take your word on that one? Regardless of how suspect it may sound (and getting defensive about it just raises it).

Shocking how people can react defensively when you call their family and loved ones racist just off the cuff like that without knowing anything about them other than they 'may' have voted for Trump.

My Aunt had a breakdown when Hillary lost and has been drinking heavily. She has been kicked out of our Thanksgiving and Christmas plans atm.

So... how was Trump going to unify the country again?

He really was and actually doesn't seem interested. Here's what some people don't get; Trump's divisive language is putting people into fear of their rights as American citizens. There will be no unity until Trump himself changes his ways, and no amount of BS unity calls from Trump supporters is going to fix that or calls from Trump saying "stop it" .

His policies is going to put people in fear and that is one of the reasons people hate him and is disappointed in people that supported him. To them you are supporting a person that might take rights away from LGBT people, hurt families that have immigrates, and discriminate against a minority religion. Trying to implant certain policies is going to divide the nation even further than before, because many people see it as anti-thesis to America should be about.

I think people should not distance themselves with their families, but explain exactly why people hate Trump and why people are acting they way they are to Trump supporters. People really need to know that his language and his policies are putting many other Americans at stake, or at least that is what many think. Trump is the only one that needs to do it and again so far he has not seemed to be interested.

The new administration would be incredibly stupid to ignore what is going on, so far they are concerned with fighting amongst themselves.

Won't someone think of the poor people who voted for a guy that wanted to disenfranchise Muslims, Mexicans, and other minority groups?

this is actual racism. Trump bringing actual white supremacists with him into the white house. and other horrible things represented by the people that have surrounded him his whole campaign.

unless you agree with that stuff, you would have to be buried deep inside an 'echo chamber' to overlook or excuse it.

Well, I didn't actually call his old man racist. But regardless, it's not that shocking people have a positive bias for their family. Personally, half of mine is a bunch of bigots. Rather than giving them a pass because 'blood' and acting cowardly by covering my ears I'll instead call them out on it. If they want to keep being stupid then I got better things to do that aren't wasting time with 'em.

Well none of my friends voted for Trump out of ideology/being racists but some sure as hell voted out of pure greed. They are happy that their taxes are being lowered (doctors so in the lower top 1% range) and screw everyone else/the country. I still talk to them but definitely very disappointed... At least my family didn't vote Republican this time, although they are typically hard core Republicans..... They just couldn't vote for Trump.

I don't think shutting out your family helps anyone. You should stick around and fight the good fight while at the same time not allowing toxicity to run your life.

I'm pretty sure my dad voted for him. He's a doctor, so he's not stupid. He's not a racist either, though he's no fan of illegal immigration.
I don't believe all Trump voters are racist.
But if you voted for Trump you voted to tolerate racism.
Period.

Maybe such a person won't be the worse for wear to feel a drop of what it feels like to react defensively to mistreatment similar to another person part of a race that is labeled as rapists by the now president of your country.

Pretty much. Caring about the second amendment, or the supreme court, or what-the-hell-ever more than the rights of minorities, women and other marginalized groups is racist, sexist and bigoted, period. Passivity is bigotry sometimes.

Yeah. And I'll say this: Even the ones who aren't racist that still voted for Trump, they're contributing to the fear & suffering for people of all of the above as well as contributing to the downfall of America, all because of the half-assed "promises" in which they believe that Trump will fulfill (which he won't).

This is why many people like me are upset & why there are many protests going on about it right now. Fuck them for it. They're no friends of mine.

As far as I know, even the kid doesn't know if the dad voted for Trump. Pretty sure, but not absolute. But don't let that stop you from being a part of a dogpile. I can tell you're almost giddy to be a part of one.

Politics isn't really brought up at Thanksgiving or other events in my family so it's not really a problem with us. Then again, we all vote Democrat, and this election pretty much made all of us Democrats for life, so unless it's the primaries, we're just preaching to the choir if it comes up.

I do, however, have friends whose families have been divided because of this election more than any other. I feel pretty bad for them because Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming up and some of them can't really celebrate with family any more.

I wasn't so much defending my dad as saying it's unreasonable for anyones opinion on here to carry more weight than my own when it comes to my own father.

That said, I do not believe voting for Trump makes you racist. I despise Trump but I personally find him to be xenophobic rather than overtly racist. But I believe there were plenty of people who voted for Trump for more general conservative reasons (federal government control, economics, etc.) and not racism, sexism, etc.

I know people who voted for Obama in previous elections, who chose to vote for Trump this year. They believe Trump will improve the economy, which is good for everyone, and they don't believe he's racist. I know Mexican-Americans who voted for Trump, because they don't feel he called them rapists - the statement was directed towards illegal aliens. Also they don't give any significance to Trump's endorsement from a KKK representative, because Trump disavowed it and they agree that the "locker room" talk wasn't serious (i.e. that Trump wouldn't actually assault someone and/or that's not what he meant).

To them, this election was just a particularly nasty election cycle, where things were blown out of proportion and they went with the candidate they thought was more trustworthy. They honestly don't believe that Trump will attack the rights of minorities...except women, because Trump openly stated he'd try to overturn Roe v. Wade...but they accept it becoming a state's issue. (The last one is the only issue I ever made headway on with them, but they were always OK with it being up to the states).

He said he may have voted for him, and the conversation proceeded under the assumption that he did indeed vote for him. If he didn't, then it would be a different conversation.

Come on, this isn't rocket science.

Choosing not believe someone will do the things they said they would do for at least a year and to appeal to a certain segment of the voting public to make yourself feel better about voting for them is not what I would call smart or deserving of compassion

Not to mention what he's actually doing with these cabinet appointments

Was curious what I would read in here and I feel bad about the divisions this is causing for some of you. It really sucks. I don't believe any of my immediate family supported Trump (and they definitely hate racism and bigotry) and in fact they are not very political. Thankfully among friends of mine that I know did vote Trump it has been mostly cordial. I also don't get too involved with the discussions unless I can't help myself. I hope things get better and that you all manage to have the best holiday season possible.

seems common.

Makes you wonder if Hillary really should have spent more effort building up her trust instead of just attack ads on trump.

'still better than voting for hillary'.

It's not that serious for me. Family supersedes everything. I don't believe in cutting out family for voting a different way than I do or thinking things from a different perspective, even if I think it's totally wrong. There's enough grey area with Trump supporters and mental gymnastics going on that a lot of people are good at heart but extremely misguided.

My Mother-in-law is visiting for 3 weeks. 3 days in, and explained to me tonight how the FBI finding nothing to charge Hillary with doesn't mean she's innocent. In fact, it means she's guilty and deserves to be locked up. I'm going to kill this woman.

Every racist has family members, who fucking cares if they get huffy and defensive over people calling them out? I wish "reputation" was the only thing on the line for everyone just thrown under the bus as well as the victims so far and those to come.

Blood is on hands, feelings be damned.

For you maybe family supersedes everything. But for the lesbian woman who has to come home to parents that voted for the staunchly anti-LGBTQ Mike Pence. It means a lot more than just different perspectives and voting a different way. This is life and death, equality and oppression for some people. Not just jobs and economics. The misguided among Trump supporters would have done better to notice that in their candidate before making their decision.

What part of calling Mexicans rapists and wanting to ban Muslims from the country is not overtly racist to you?

Muslims aren't a race, and Muslim refugees represent a non-zero threat to the U.S. look at what's happened in Europe. And I never took Trump's infamous Mexican comments to be broadly condemning Mexicans but rather intended to criticize criminal elements coming from that country. So the things he said on those points were not complete irrational.

I don't agree with the things Trump says but unlike many on GAF I have to evaluate his statements on my own and not jump to the worst possible conclusion.

I do feel he's the worst presidential candidate in my lifetime and I'm very nervous about the future Trump adminstration. But ultimately I feel he is an amoral narcissist rather than a Hitleresque white supremacist.

I have no doubt that he has racial biases due to his age and background, but most of the worst things he's said have been tone deaf comments rather than intentionally racist.

That's way too easy. You do realize that policies by the government always impacts lives don't you?

Most of us can figure our shit out but when you live in a Country of rule and Law you cannot say such things.

The I don't care attitude because I have my shit figured out is nonsense and people should really stop using it.

The rules impose today may not affect you but it could affect your partner or your kids or friends a few years from now.

You figure your shit out on Mars.

Like I said before, I'm sure daddy Trump supporter's feelings aren't hurt. Not sure why you're getting so defensive unless there's something you'd like to share.

Eh, I've seen OT become extremely nasty in the past 6 months when even an innocent comment or thread will be met by outright hostility or up to what I consider to be a hand waiving of "You're not worth my time." type dismissals.

Just talked to a doctor yesterday that denied humans contributed to climate change. I asked him if he appreciated that people who are more knowledgeable almost unanimously disagree with him. He said he understood that but it just wasn't his belief.

If he can't trust that science, I have no faith that he understands the science of medicine. Some of the most remarkably stupid people I've met were in dental school. Don't let the title fool you, plenty doctors are rock stupid.

You also know the White Supremacist backgrounds of a lot of the people Trump is surrounding himself in his cabinet with, right?

No, "Muslims" is not a race - it's just code for anyone that looks Middle Eastern. After all, no one gives a shit about white Muslims. And you have hate crimes being committed against those of Middle Eastern descent that aren't Muslim, because their attackers think they are.

This was Trump's quote on Mexicans: "When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."

Is that little bit at the end really enough to qualify as not "broadly condemning"? Because it sure as hell looks like the vast majority of that quote is condemning them.

The dude refused to rent to black people. Is that tone deaf too? How about calling for the execution of black teenagers for a crime they didn't commit even AFTER they were found not guilty? Is that tone deaf?
