I just hop the off topic forum doesn't turn into the politics forum.

The problem was that it was one big group ganging up on a few people while going further and further in one direction and conspiracy. The mods tried to curb it by banning conspiracy theories but the same people still remained and dug their heels in deeper while misrepresenting and mocking any dissent.

I mainly just dipped into the COVID and vaccine threads, since those are probably the two political topics that are most pressing and directly relevant to me these days, and I really appreciated the balanced mix of different viewpoints. If you go on r/politics for example, it's all one narrative and everything else gets banned or neutered. On the other hand if you go on Patriots.win for example, they have their own narrative of the virus and vaccines, and you can get banned pretty easily there as well. And then 4chan is a known cesspool.

I really liked how the smug leftists and asshole conservatives got to bark at each other on here pretty freely, so that we can all find the truth a little easier. But yeah, I wasn't a heavy visitor of the politics forum, so I can't speak to the majority of other threads.

It was a source of major friction and drama within the community. It was attracting the wrong type of people to GAF, and pushing away the right type of people. It was a nightmare to moderate. It was frequently an embarrassment to be associated with.

It's gone.

I had it on ignore because I just wasn't interested in the type of discussions people were having there. I had a feeling it was causing a lot of problems since many of the bans tend to come from there. Just a shame people were not able to turn it into something more productive instead of a pool of toxicity and hate.

Perhaps it's for the best. It'll be just a relief to just discuss games and other stuff not related to politics.

But I do agree with some posters here that gaming has become heavily politicized in recent years. It's sometimes hard to separate it when 'game journalists' insist this is what counts as news today.

I did like the politics forum but seeing racist posts in there get likes just made me feel uncomfortable. I ignored them (I haven't reported anyone in over a year) if I didn't have the energy to challenge them. It was disheartening seeing people speak in a way that was hateful towards people like me. Especially posters I had previously respected.

The problem was that it was one big group ganging up on a few people while going further and further in one direction and conspiracy.

I also generally tried to ignore those people who were too off in the deep end. I tried to stick to discussing with people I picked out to be more reasonable, ignoring the rest, and blocking the few who couldn't take a hint. I have had some productive discussions that way where people shifted their views. The only time I've faced absurd levels of hostility here is on the politics forum and on political topics in the gaming forum. Politics are poison.

So this is a forum which I am not allowed to talk about certain topics? Also people can get banned for giving reactions/likes to a post(which they might not even read fully)?? I think you need to calm down man.

Getting rid of a subforum accomplishes nothing especially when you set it up to filter out the political comments to begin with. Now political comments will just leak into gaming and then you will be banning a lot of valuable members the same way you were doing the last few months.

It's also hypocritical to say that this is a gaming forum and nothing else should be allowed. I mean look at your off topic forum where it's dominated by T&A threads. This is not pornhub lol.

If anything, I think you are getting too political for your own good. Just my opinion. Alright take care.

Actually, I realized the COVID thread is in the Off-Topic section, so that reduces a good amount of my disappointment. It's the best place I've found on the internet to digest the different views regarding the most important topic in the world right now. Hopefully that can continue with mostly free discussion.

At the end of the day, the problem was that you couldn't have an opinion in the politics forum without being painted as either right or left. Sadly the issues have been hijacked by politics in which you can't be Socially liberal but still have conservative leanings in economic policy for example. But it wasn't even that broad, if you took 1 side or another on any issue you would get ganged up by the same posters. It happens on Ree as well, and its just impossible to have an educated discussion.

In order to have a good discussion there has to be nuance. I'd say in the last 5 or so years it has become more and more difficult to bring nuance into any political discussion without being shit on.

I would argue this is why the politics forum was actually a good filter for the rest of the site.

A ghetto of sorts.

People more conservative leaning who actively try to avoid the T&A stuff still had a gaming-but-not-talking-about-gaming area to chat, and the more liberal leaning, which is basically Off Topic, had an outlet for their desire to argue with the other side.

All of those discussions in an avoidable place

We'll see how it goes!

In the end, the games bring us all together, ... which is why politics was good in my opinion, the gaming tempers it all.

Good. That place was nothing more than an extremist echo-chamber. most annoyingly, people using "discussions" as a way to peddle in bigotry.
It would constantly bleed into the gaming side too. A game that stars an older woman is now automatically considered "woke"... like wut???

It was like rather that trying to be the normal forum for videogames, gaf place just tried becoming just as political as era.

imo, political discussions are pointless, because opinions, at their deepest level, are shaped by experience rather than discussion.
You know what is "right" and what is "wrong" based on what you've experienced and your philosophical outlook in life. It's very much like debating relgion.

I could be mistaken, but I think he addressed this a few pages back. Basically all politics and any form are forbidden. That includes any discussion of policy regardless of what it's about and seemingly any side effects of said policy.



Which to be honest I feel like it's a good call because of how easily that slope could become awfully slippery. With the way that politics usually works on here we could have a thread talking about biden's new tax plan and two pages in we are suddenly arguing about whether or not abortion should be allowed or how much Trump pays his flings. Any topic could basically devolve into complete anarchy almost instantly when it comes to politics.

That's politics too, if you're doing it then go all the way, hopefully all of it it's nuked, but I expect the hypocrisy to start showing since this sounds more like a cowardly move to avoid criticism.
