Here's the question I've been thinking about: how would they balance Phoenix Wright? I'd really like if they somehow made him viable but I can't imagine it happening without drastic changes.
Go "fuck it" and replace/add a bunch of move where he calls in assists from spirit of justice npcs.

Air raid from the toy copter!
Datz bellyflopping in from the sky!
"A dragon never yields!"

We already had Iron Man with good air movement in Vanilla Marvel 3. He just didn't have good ground movement.

His normals are very good but very narrow and lack the cross up ability. He is still very weak from below unlike Doom which can Foot Dive from below.

I think of they just give him a proper ground dash that's fine by itself. That way at least he can position himself. He would work like a Nova type character then. I think as Marvel has evolved, characters with no way to plink around on either ground or ground got a lot weaker. Iron Man was one of the victims of this.

in vanilla he didn't have the ability to convert at all because he didn't have airdash cancelable normals, the numerous normal buffs that he got in ultimate or the combo extender buffs (repulsor hard KD, smart bomb hitstun+speed buff that lets him combo from throws/airthrows consistently). hell, even his special damage scaling got buffed by a significant amount iirc. remember when cr.h wasn't special cancelable and flight was too slow to combo off of cr.m st.h?

he's also less weak than magneto from below and if he got even a thor airdash he'd be a massive fucking problem by just farting around and then doing airdash down+S or airdash downback+S. he really does not have trouble covering his landings that much

you're right in that his largest limiting factors is his ground dash, though. if he had the ability to just move around like a regular character instead of having ryu/chris's insane '16f of can't do anything' dash with nonsensical acceleration then he would be infinitely better while still being worse than doom because of his ground converts being so finnicky. if he got a real ground dash AND a solid way to convert off stuff (cr.m st.h starter working regardless of distance) then he'd be doom tier, roughly

also he'd be a trijump character, why does he need a crossup? remember, he's got sentinel-sized normals already. being able to just do airdash forward j.s with a real airdash and ground dash is already nova-tier in scaring the shit out of someone/generating pressure. add in a real trijump and boy howdy

i really hope this is true. yeah i like the xmen in marvel games but i can deal with them being gone for this iteration. i don't even care if it's just a versus game of something else (cvs, capcom vs capcom) and doesn't involve marvel as long as it plays similarly.

i enjoyed sfiv up until around ultra, and after investing a fair bit of time into sfv i've come to the conclusion it just isn't for me. a new versus game would have me buying a console and a stick. if it came out on pc that would be the dream. shit i'd be delighted if they just patched umvc3 and released a decent pc port.

Wait, you're telling me Capcom made a new game in one of their beloved IPs after years of fan demand, and managed to somehow find a way to fuck it up on a fundamental scale? I for one am shocked.
You do realize that this isn't Capcom's fault, right?

EDIT: Just checked the rest of the thread, someone already corrected you.

^BTW unfortunately posts like this will be a regular occurrence all over the internet. Capcom will catch the blame for the no X-men ordeal HARD.

If Marvel was a true bro they should squash this from the beginning somehow by saying it's their decision.

Oddball picks for the Capcom side: Linn Kurosawa and Gene

I'm surprised how often I'm seeing Gene. I mean I love it, but I expected to see a lot more Asura than Gene, because they fill a similar role. Super-powerful (relatively speaking, in their own universe) bruiser that has limited energy projection, from a single game with no sequels, that was a flop financially but a super charming sleeper hit. I've been calling for Gene, and to a lesser extent, Asura since MvC3.

Anyway, now some theorycrafting. Characters I think are locks for MvC4, Marvel side. Loki, he's a very prominent villain in the MCU, which is rumored to be the focus. Would provide a unique approach to gameplay as well. Daredevil, he was relegated to a background character in the last game, and has had a very popular TV show in the meantime. Spider-Gwen, she is blowing up right now. One or more Spider-Man villains, Doc Ock was in the files of MvC3, but not completed. I wouldn't be surprised to see Venom or Carnage either. At least one character from Guardians of the Galaxy, either Starlord or Groot, for obvious reasons. Ant-man, for obvious reasons. Those are the ones I think are locks, 100% chance to get in, though there are others that I think are very likely.

Locks for Capcom side, SOME SORT OF MEGA MAN. I expect X, but with the success of Classic in Smash, I wouldn't be surprised to see him, honestly. Some sort of Rival Schools rep, probably Batsu. He was in TvC and MvC3 didn't have a Rival Schools rep. Either Asura or Gene, not both. I expect Asura to be in and Gene be an assist if the rumors are true about assist only characters. A new Street Fighter character, most likely Rashid or Necalli. Also a Monster Hunter rep. Hunter would be good in Rathalos armor. Either weapon switching, or keep one weapon, either could work. Three colors could be Red for Rathalos, Blue for Azure Rathalos, and Silver for Silver Rathalos. they could also have a monster, it is unlikely but possible. A Felyne is the most likely of all. Think Servbot, Roll, Viewtiful Joe, or Amaterasu size.

I'm sorry if I've repeated opinions that some of you hold, but I've been reading through the thread and have absorbed information and been convinced of certain things by some compelling arguments.

I guess even if Marvel did that, people would still blame Capcom somehow.

Logic does not apply on cases like this.

Oh man. Ain't that the truth. Capcom is probably the company not named Konami that people like to blame the most.

Personally don't think it'll matter to most people.

World is a different place since when MvC3 launched. It'll make internet denizens mad the same way it makes them mad when their favorite characters aren't in the latest release of a fighting game.

Marvel is an entity now, though. Not going to matter when they start showing footage of all the characters that are in billion dollar properties. Casuals, those consumers so many people have been telling Capcom to chase, are going to eat that shit up. This has potential to be huge.

At this point if no marvel fighting game or port with patch is mentioned its gonna explode against capcom after all this buildup this week. At minimal a port of UMVC3 would be something but if it was just a port with no patch it'd get slaughtered by people raging.

Here's hoping it truly is the full sequel we've heard rumored and not just the UMVC3 port hinted at that someone mentioned it sounded like Polygon was hinting at as well.

Worst case...nothing.

Best case Marvel 4 and UMVC3 update port with patch to play till it launches. (And likely after.)

Judging from the OP, it really sounds like they're going to re-release UMVC3 to appease the Xmen fans. That way they can release MVC4 with no Xmen and people won't be as salty.

If I get Ant-Man without his stupid comic design, Black Panther, anything from Monster Hunter, Mega Man X or Necalli I will be able to look past the X-men exclusion.

Also I would love it if they include DmC Dante, people would lose their shit.

X-Men being out would defintely cause a shitstorm, but I think the 2v2+1 assist rumor being true would also piss a lot of people off, especially Marvel fans.

I really really really don't understand the Necalli love. He is such a horrible character, design wise.

Fucker can't even formulate proper sentences.

I really want MVC2 either on PS4 or back up on PSN. That's probably the fighting game I've wanted to play the most but never able to.

I still think the 8 year old son of someone high up at Capcom designed him and his "I can do everything AND I'm a Super Saiyan!" moveset.

Not Capcom's fault the community falls into a hype echo chamber.

I hope that discussion you did with Vesper is heard by a lot of people. Thanks for doing that, btw. If more people know all the details about what Marvel is doing to the X-Men/F4 characters, then less of the blame will be put onto Capcom. Capcom are the ones I'm really worried about in all this, and by extension, the future of the fighting game genre/FGC.
No problem, Vesper was actually really down with the idea when I suggested it to him. Our plan (or at least after we recorded that video) is to do more Mahvel & Injustice discussions together since I have the comic book knowledge. I think I'm coming back for the podcast after PSX/CC, so I'll likely be talking about more than just Mahvel.

As someone who has been following Marvel on and off for some time, I can assure you that most folks who research know Marvel is being really vindictive over X-Men. We need to throw fire and brimstone at Marvel's treatment of a beloved series that many of us 90's kids grew up with.

To mirror what others said, I am gravely concerned for Capcom's sake in light of this situation. They maybe doing OK, but there was a lot of turmoil over how SF5 launched. I whole headily agree that Capcom is not the enemy here, they just by chance are that one company that had a lot of dealings with Marvel in their career and I doubt anyone else could make Marvel Vs Capcom IP AS GOOD as Capcom does.

It also would be really silly for another studio to pick up the MvC IP and develop it anyway.

That being said, I also agree with what Maximilian Dood has said in his latest video about how strange it would be to not see a MvC series NOT built on X-men characters-- because the legacy and the hype train that became the MvC series was built on the backs of X Men characters.

I want to see the X Men in this game. They NEED to be there, they DESERVE to be there. This should not be a question of who or why, it simply should BE.

Yeah, really. One dream gets posted and suddenly its rumored and true because this guy said so etc etc etc.

Marvel is even more rabid than Smash in rumors and fans IMO.

Yeah, lol. This thread is ridiculous.

Wait, this is a 2nd thread isn't it? LOL

I hope it happens.

This is it right here. You see it in Smash as well.

X-Men is probably only the beginning of the outrage, and it will go through the motions once more. Let's not forget the whole Megaman debacle last time. So long as this is a series that involves a collection of beloved characters, people will always be pissed if their favourite character doesn't get in because they weigh the entire value of and the entirety of their interest in the game on that single character getting in or not. And that happens whether it's a popular character like Megaman Classic or someone the majority of prospective consumers don't give a fuck about like Geno.

I whole-heartedly agree. At this point, I'll even take a reduction of Fox representation down to the bare essentials (Wolverine, Deadpool, Doctor Doom, & Magneto) if it means having them represented in the game at all.

if there are no X-men in MvC4, do you expect it to sell fewer copies than MvC3?
That's an iffy question. The average joe mainly cares about the MCU characters, but Deadpool's absence when he's at the height of his popularity will definitely hurt the game's sales. The question is how much the game will suffer for it if the worst-case scenario happens.

Game will do fine with or without xmen they'll hype up guardians + avengers and that'll get casuals in the door
True, but you have to admit that people will notice that Deadpool's missing (same for Wolverine). It may not be a major drop in potential sales, but it'll be some kind of drop.

Watched the video yesterday, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the matter and making things clearer for those of us who don't know that much about the ban.
