i would like to announce that POLYTRON and the FEZ IP are now for sale. no reasonable offer will be turned down. i am done. i want out.
Man, I'd been missing everything going on. Before that might've been seen as an overreaction, but now it looks to be the most pragmatic course of action if anything. :/

The fact that being a raving sociopath anonymously is so easy these days is terrifying, man. It just another way society can surprise you with how low it can sink, only this way makes it easier than ever. The worst part is that these personas don't even match up with how they act in real life.

So, according to IGN he's selling Fez.

Edit: This guy has a bad history of over reacting. That sucks what happened to him and he didn't deserve that, but the guy is a douche in my opinion. Maybe he should stay off Twitter. FFS, Zelda Williams did nothing and got harassed with photos when her dad passed. It's sort of the nature of the beast. If you're in the public eye, some anonymous assholes are going to shit on you one way or the other. The guy needs thicker skin.

I don't think swearing off game development and selling his company is an overreaction in this instance. People have left the game industry for much worse reasons.

There's a certain poetry to seeing comments on some sites split 50/50 between: 'that asshole deserved it' and 'Fish hacked himself nobody would hack him' ...

Yeah, people have such a huge blind spot when it comes to "their side". No one who shares such logical and reasoned viewpoints as I do could ever stoop so low as to do something wrong. Obviously the guy doxxed himself. It's the only possible explanation!

Let this be a warning to all SJW game devs out there, we are coming for you.
The hack of Zoe Quinn has already taken place as of a few days ago and I have targeted more SJW indie devs today.

We will not let you destroy our gaming industry with your feminist SJW tendencies.

He popped back into the spotlight with the Zoe Quinn thing in the past few days or so. You had the whole shitty situation with Zoe Quinn, and all the shitty people involved in that, and when you mix that with Phil's tendency to mouth off at people in general and throw those shitty people into the mix, you end up with the perfect storm and one particular shitty person(or group of shitty people) with enough skill/know how to hack his personal lively-hood for saying the wrong things at the wrong time and the wrong people taking notice.

Did I mention everything about it is shitty?

Speaking of that: I don't want to de-rail the thread or anything, but is there a definitive "What actually happened" on the Zoe Quinn thing now? I was only really following that on the periphery.

For those of you who haven't seen, FEZ programmer Renaud Bedard has posted some more details on his Twitter. They're replies, so they don't show up on his profile by default. See them all here.

Included in there are details about exactly what was taken and how, and that he's not 100% sure Polytron and FEZ are actually for sale.

Yep. If I was in his shoes, I'd do the exact same thing. I've always thought I was going to put the hobby game I'm doing on Steam (or try to at least) when it's finished, but at this point, fuck it. Dealing with the general public just doesn't seem to be worth it.

This is a pretty unproductive way to go about discussing the problem though. Isn't it easier for people to stop being assholes than it is for someone to grow "thicker skin?" You know the battle is lost when everyone just throws their hands up and accepts that being an asshole is the norm. People being cool should be the norm.

Fedora dolts asking for more diversity in the industry just as long as its their kind of diversity, no surprise to see people dimissing this just like they dismiss everything that doesnt involve their #notallmen meek crap.

This is a fairly major story. It's very weird that Kotaku hasn't covered it at all.

These are the same people who cover such non-stories as Hideki Kamiya trolling on Twitter, and this is something that's a big story.

"What actually happened" is that a lot of very personal things happened between Zoe and her ex that never had any business being made public, but the ex did so anyway.

The tenuous connection between these events and the games industry was entirely debunked. The people she supposedly "manipulated" for coverage never even gave her any meaningful coverage.

So that's it. Whatever hurtful things she allegedly did to her boyfriend are between the two of them and none of our business.

While I agree, dumping on the victim isnt as productive as chastising the perp, I'd definitely say the bold has a very small chance of ever actually happening. Too many assholes in the world. I dont think thicker skin is the answer, per say, but you definitely have to heavily consider the consequences of being an active user on social media as a public(no matter how small) figure.

an ex made a psychotically detailed post about her behavior involving tons of personal details that are nobody's business but the people involved. paranoiacs on the internet invented wild fantasies about her trading sex for favorable coverage of her free browser game.

phil fish went to bat for her on twitter, then when he got hacked and those responsible used misogynist language the MRA defense force started insisting that we can't really know whether it was about social justice or not so you shouldn't even bring it up. because i guess exposing someone's entire life and business to the internet is bad but god forbid we accuse the person who did so of being sexist without a signed confession.

I miss those days when all you have to do is blow into a cartridge and you know...press start on the title screen. I want them back.

Somewhat hyberbolic statement incoming, but this is so disgusting what has happened that I'm not only turned off by the toxic video game community (NeoGaf excluded) that gave rise to whatever scum did this but I kind of feel turned off by video games in general. It is or was my favorite hobby, but I'm getting older. I may be getting married soon. My free time is rapidly shrinking with each passing day as is my interest in the teenage power fanntasy model of games that these people who did this are so hopelessly clinging to with tooth and nail that they resort to what is tantamount to economic terrorism. If that all that's going to get made because game creators face potential life-ruining consequences by socially maladjusted internet warriors, then I don't think I want to be a part of or support whatever it is that they view as "gaming" that needs to be protected. Sure, I'll probably still play games, still probably play and buy a lot, but I think I have found myself in recent months distance myself more and more from my favorite hobby in large part because of the toxic community it tends to cater to.

It's a lot of white noise over nothing. Unfortunately, instead of doing an article debunking everything point by point, gaming sites have essentially posted short pieces saying it's a non-story (without explaining why this is), and so a lot of folks are assuming the radio silence from the sites is equivalent to them trying to hide something.

Hmm. So maybe Fish kept his password manager synced via a Dropbox file, and that was all they needed? I feel really bad for Bedard, because all the crap Fish said, and now this retaliation, has no doubt splashed all over him.

lol. He's not going with his franchise rights. He's getting out. He'd never sign a deal that forced him to censor himself anyway.

I know he plans to get out (for how long is the question), I''m saying that at some point Devolver could always convince him to come back under better circumstances. And I don't think they would really "censor" him, just try to get him to lay off of the curse words/use better tact and stay focused on development rather than all the other drama.

That dnsdies guy really doesn't want it to be a hack...

I do this stuff for me, and I know many other indies that are the same way. Thats the big secret for a lot of developers (small ones at least) - they dont make stuff for their audience, they make stuff for themselves and it just so happens that their taste is relatable.

I make stuff that I never put online, solely for my own pleasure. I enjoy programming, its like a giant puzzle for me. I actually find the process rewarding. Like a clockwork maker who takes pride in his craft.

Coolio has a line in one of his songs that I love because it encapsulates why I do this: "if hip hop didnt pay I'd rap for free."

Oh don't get me wrong, I think I work in a similar way. Every now and then I'll have an idea for a small project and then work on it in my free time, never going public.

Never large projects, more like exercises. Something I could get to a usable state in a few days. A dungeon generator or simple puzzle game or something. Anything doable that I think I'll enjoy and might learn something from.

I think it is much more enjoyable to make something you are interested in, than trying to construct a checklist for some hypothetical market you don't care about.

That feeling of somewhat quickly going from a simple idea in my head to something tangible is great, especially when I'm used to long periods of nothing.

People are afraid to cover it. That's the point of actions like these, to scare people into shutting up. We have people posting photos of mods on this board along with harassing private details. We have mods who are considering quitting, rather than put up with it. That is the entire point of these little shitbags. If they can scare Fish and Quinn out of the industry, they can scare anyone out. No one wants their loved ones dragged into this shit.

I'm in no way defending the assholes of the internet, but it's not like we're going to magically make everyone start being nice. He should just choose to ignore the assholes and pick his battles more wisely.

I agree. But I'm not saying the goal should be to get rid of all assholes (this is a little impossible). I'm just saying when it comes to pointing fingers, especially on the internet, the fingers should be pointed at the assholes. In fact, shove those fingers right into the assholes. And youtube it plz.

But I also still stand by the idea that its easier for someone to stop being a douche than it is for someone to condition themselves against that person being a douce. At least on an individual level.

What I'm saying is that all the assholes should just stop being assholes all at once.

all I know is there was incentive for Phil Fish to make it seem like he was hacked too. By doing so, he helps protect ZQ by having 'another' doxing incident. This double protects his friend, who she allegedly had sexual relations with (the name eludes me... he worked on Fez). This is why he's been defending her from the get-go. I'm not saying it did or didn't happen... but there's *incentive* to make this all up or set it up himself. With that said, people on the internet are generally fucking scumbags and are even worse than PF, who I personally think has a personality disorder or two.

This entire story is heavily centered around a tiny subset of people looking to cause chaos and revel in it; Kotaku and other such sites might actually be showing restraint by not giving them the attention they're craving. Also, since this issue is about Phil's personal info being blasted all over the net, it's probably better that less people are aware of it.

That might be highly presumptuous, but I think that's a safe guess as to why the big sites are being silent (at least until things settle down).

Holy shit. It's hard to believe that actually happened, and yet it's actually not that hard to believe.

Disgusting.
