It's just so odd to me. She normally doesn't sing with a full, connected head voice, and the difference between her connected head voice and her falsetto is enormous. It's actually a really great example of the difference between a good, but disconnected, falsetto and a good, connected head voice in terms of fullness, weight, and volume.

Just listen to her singing falsetto in the clips in this video, and then to Ave Maria again. It's like night and day.

Admittedly it does become harder to differentiate between the two as falsetto gets higher and with microphones, but it is usually still possible.

Not sure what you're hearing - it sounds exactly like Leona. She's always had a connected head voice, and that video is very limited in its selection.
