President Obama Is Pissed (Oregon Shooting Press Conference)

Hey man, Obama tried. It even turned public opinion, even now a majority of the people in this country are down for some new regulations, but Congress said fuck you to everyone.

There's no proof this had anything to do with them, it's fear mongering on both sides. ISIS wants us to think they have that kind of reach and the people who published the article know that fear of ISIS will drive clicks. That article is pure clickbait.
the comment sections of this article has a lot of people thinking that he was a muslim or that islam played a role in this shooting in some way shape or form, particularly probably because he was targeting christians.

The only way meaningful gun control legislation can be passed is if the Democrats control the House and have a filibuster proof Senate. Thanks to gerrymandering, the Tea Party nuts of the GOP will control the House for the foreseeable future.

2020, every progressive person in this country needs to put their time and money on the table for that election at every level of governance.

Sadly,a friend on fb posted this up.

"Mass shooting equals more gun laws the more mass shootings occur the more excuses the government has to disarm the public in my option this is all set up for their gun control agenda"

I honestly can't tell if he's trolling or not. =/

Defriend him or stop browsing facebook.

Allen West's website? Are you kidding me dude? The comments section even? Seriously? Could you have picked a less reputable source than a comments section on Allen West's website? Shit scrawled on a cum-stained bathroom wall at Penn Station is more likely to be accurate than anything you find there.

Sandy Hook gets mentionned a tad casually now

It wasn't just a stat
Just another statistic in the gun massacre epidemic. America said oh wells

well i seriously did not know allen west had such a bad rep.

The NRA has way too much political power for that. Obama would fucking love to sign such a law, but the NRA has Congress by the balls--most of the wanting to be there.
Yup. Pandering for votes is one thing, which does affect the democratic process, but there's something far deeper and more powerful and sinister, and that is lobbying.

Not only is the NRA exceedingly powerful politically, but it's not even financed by gun owners, but gun makers:
http://financesonline.com/the-nra-is-lobbying-and-the-gun-companies-are-paying-the-bills/

Which explains why many gun owners are actually not opposed to restrictions on ownership, background checks, and so on; but gun makers certainly are, for obvious reasons ($$$).

Like, in what world are liberals arguing that law enforcement and security officials shouldn't have firearms?

They believe they are just as qualified, trained, and calm under pressure as the secret service is.

To them, they're always one mass shooting away from gunning down "the enemy" and becoming a national hero, beloved by millions, with their trusty gun at their side.

That it could be much worse given how many firearms are out there.

No it's not. There shouldn't be any, ultimately. My point is that it could be worse than it currently is (not that the status quo is ideal).

Tired of getting jumped here, quite frankly.

It is worse. In 2013 there were 12,461 firearm homicides. That's 1.22 Sandy hooks every day. including suicides, there were 33,636 firearm deaths in 2013. That's roughly 3.3 Sandy Hooks every day.

Why do people keep stating that Obama will disarm people if his gun laws are passed when his proposal and speech explicitly states the contrary?

Just reading all those pro gun tweets and reading about those weak, usually hateful fear mongering arguments to try and toss the debate on gun control into another direction makes me believe that the US is too deep in its own mess to actually ever change this gun loving culture,

I just hope us Canadians don't overly become like this one day seeing as more recently we've been sidetracking ourselves into some US imitation

Good guy with a gun on campus explains why he didn't try to draw his gun on shooter:

Saying he does conceal carry in case “I’m in close proximity” to an incident where he might try to save some lives, Parker admitted he’s not the type who believes that “there’s always somebody out there behind your back ready to do something like this.”

Conservative commentators — none of whom were caught up in the panic and confusion at the college campus — have complained that the school’s “gun-free” designation drew the shooter there and that a “good guy with a gun” could have stopped him.

Parker explained that his military training provided him with the skills to “go into danger,” but said he felt lucky he and others didn’t try to get involved going after Mercer.

“Luckily we made the choice not to get involved,” he explained. “We were quite a distance away from the building where this was happening. And we could have opened ourselves up to be potential targets ourselves, and not knowing where SWAT was, their response time, they wouldn’t know who we were. And if we had our guns ready to shoot, they could think that we were bad guys.”

Didn't you know, it doesn't count as "a Sandy Hook" unless it has a minimum of 28 deaths.

I coped this from my twitter feed, because it simply tells it like it is! (which is sad and pathetic, but true)

St.Anthony ‏@ImHatedByAll Oct 1

1.CNN reports
2.Obama speaks
3.Fox news says this has nothing to do with gun control
4. Twitter prays
5. Nothing changes

Didn't want to put it in the OP, but I also found this.

Totally insane gun nut responds to speech. Like "I don't even know if this thing took place" crazy. This is what we're up against.

I don't know about you, but I am comforted knowing such upstanding and well-reasoned citizens are walking among us, equipped with guns, ready to uphold our freedom from the incomprehensibly massive global superpower of the United States military.

Whoo baby he is on fire and rightfuly so.

Seems like every few months he has to talk about this which is sad. We need to start gun control before more people get hurt and killed.

i don't know if you guys know who pamela geller is but she apparently has found out more about the perpetrator's myspace and one of his friends was a muslim who apparently had terrorist-like postings.

I'm kinda confused as to why you keep going out into the wilds of the internet and dragging dead messes back to this thread's doorstep like an eager, proud kitten.

lol

Why do you keep posting all these shitty links?
How do you always find the worst sources
I'm kinda confused as to why you keep going out into the wilds of the internet and dragging dead messes back to this thread's doorstep like an eager, proud kitten.
i didn't find them from the wilds of the internet, i found them on facebook. and they're not things i'm proud to have found. they're not helping my mood in any way, but i'm bringing them here to see what others have to say about it in response.

i have gotten a warning from a mod previously about posting similar things, so i'll just stop it here.

I sincerely believe that there needs to be an 'anti-NRA'. Those of us that are for reasonable gun control need to quit sitting on our couches wringing our hands and instead band together and create a lobby to buy our own politicians.

I wonder if something like that could happen.

besada had a good post in the other thread with a list of groups that are interested reforming gun laws. Donating to one of them would be a good start.

Facebook isn't the best place to find sources on stuff like this. Go to places like the NYTimes, CNN, ABC, CBS, NPR, BBC, the Washington Post, PBS, NBC. You know, standard, reputable news sources. If you see something somewhere and one of these sources isn't reporting it the place you are at is probably not legit.

If you're looking for ways to refute them on facebook then save yourself the effort and don't bother. People sharing links like this and the sandy hook conspiracy theories you posted before are probably too far gone to reason with.

Thanks for this. And thanks Besada for the knowledge dump. I will certainly look into some of these.

I do however think it would be more effective for these 8 different sites he linked to band together into one singular organization. In my opinion it would be way more effective and 'louder' that way.

part of me feels like they may not be reporting these things because they don't want the public to know.

it's not for trying to refute them. i know these people on facebook are too far gone to be reasoned with; i think it reasonable to believe though that there are intelligent posters here on gaf and I wanted to see their two cents on them. which I have.

to be fair though, how would the situation be any better if any of his bodyguards weren't carrying firearms?

Plz, try to restrict your trolling to the gaming forum, it's getting ridiculous now.

Gun laws are not there to prevent policemen from carrying a gun, they exist to prevent total lunatics from carrying a gun, like in every civilized country on this planet.

It's really not that hard to understand.

before we go any further, please, try to wrap your head around the fact that i'm not and never was trolling.

i was questioning the point of the image itself. it's saying that a dozen armed men around the president didn't prevent a shot being fired, which is true. how would the situation have been better if there weren't anyone around him armed is what i was asking.

Are you trying to say stricter gun laws will force security personal working unarmed?

Really?
no, that's not what i'm trying to say. that was just me being devil's advocate. i don't really have a stance on this issue, but there's no denying that there is a gun problem in this country.

You're either a very confused person, a consistent troll, or a conspiracy theorist trying to spread the red pill without getting banned and I'm still not sure which.
it's the first, and i've admitted that many times. so lay it to rest. i'm not very informed in major events and being a minority in america, i don't know what to believe a lot of the time when i read shit online. let's not make this thread about me.
Someone said you do this on the gaming side too so I'm going with option number two.
then you're wrong about me still. whatever.
