Pressing "NO TIP" when paying your barber is one of the most awkward interactions

If OP's barber isn't fucking his shit up, I imagine he's okay with it. Maybe he views tipping as optional.

I tip my barber, but I don't go crazy (almost doubling the cost of a haircut is insanity to me). Keep on keepin' on, OP.

Thank fuck there is no tipping culture in Sweden. The only place anyone would consider tipping is restaurants, and then it's at most 10%. Personally I never tip at all since they get paid well enough.

A lot of people in this thread not from the US don't get how low barbers and servers are being paid. If you're worried about tipping when you visit here then only tip barbers, servers and drivers who work in restaurants. That pretty much covers it. You don't have to tip Billy who works at Best Buy or Antoine who works at the furniture outlet lol.

Lol at people shaming op. Op don't let people pressure you into doing something you don't feel like doing. Shouldn't have made a thread though, people hate us no tippers lol

Never heard of anyone trying to get you to tip with their phone though, that is in itself awkward.

Barbers makes way more in US than Jamaica and the service cost in Jamaica is also less, though I suppose its all relative to income earned

i hope tourist don't get f over just because they don't know what to do

Tourists are safe without tipping, they won't come back at the place anyway...
Americans are hypocrites, they don't tip because they care about the low income, they just tip because they're afraid that someone spit in their plates or fuck their haircuts when they come back the next time.

People hate people who don't tip in industries where tipping is essentially required.

Wait staff and those who cut hair live off tips for their actual wage. It has been that way for decades and decades. Not tipping in these industries is essentially telling them they are doing a bad job and do not deserve to be paid for their service they provided you.

If the barber owns the shop, makes sense not to tip. Probably crunched all the numbers and knows how much s/he should charge to keep the place going. If barber is an employee, then it makes sense to tip if you like the service.

If you're a regular then you should probably tip either way as an extra "thank you".

The outrage in this thread is idiotic though. I assume most of you are joking, or at least I hope you are.

Yeah the barbers at the shop I go to have to give up half of every cut and pay a high monthly booth rent. If he wasnt such a dope barber and got all those tips I wouldnt know how he makes it every month.

Many believe poor service is justified if a tip isn't given. One of the biggest problems with the culture.

A salon or hairdressers isn't a barbers, at least in the north where I live. I only pay £8 for a haircut whereas if I went to a hairdressers I would probably have to pay treble that. Also, barbers tend to be men with male only clients.

This is a good reason to tip, a traditional barbers working out of a small shop is different to the shopping centre salons and even chain brand barbers. Those more expensive barbers is all you will have left if you don't pay just a little extra in tips and customer loyalty to the traditional barbers. I like a little chit chat with my barber, that he remembers the cut I like and that if it's a busy day and he knows I'm getting a cut during my lunch break he'll let me know he won't be able to get to me within the hour and to come back tomorrow.

Also, I'm old enough to remember that back only as far as the late 80's in the UK the only 2 places to get Condoms were the barbers and the Chemist. When your 16 and it's embarrassing enough to buy them. Guaranteed the chemist at the weekend will have a girl from your school working there part time on a Saturday morning. You appreciate that discreetness that buying them from the barber "something for the weekend sir?" Provided and at a time when you started to care about your appearance to get girls. Now buying condoms is no big deal, throw a big box in the trolley at the supermarket, nobody cares, but back in the 80's it took a while to be accepted.

So not only did your barber make you look good to get a better chance at pulling, he'd also make sure you didn't get a dirty dick.

I'm in my 30s, and I remember being a child and my dad always giving me a few extra dollars to tip my barber. I've never not tipped a barber or hairdresser.

I live in Canada though, and we aren't monsters here :D

I've been going to the same barbers for over 20 years since I was a teenager, They've had the same staff for most of this time and are always busy, no appointments just turn up and wait for a slot. It's a very friendly atmosphere and always a fun conversation going on with staff and the other clients. They aren't going anywhere.

You should fucking tip your barber, christ.

A better example of this awkward interaction would be when that screen shows up when getting take-out, or at a counter-service type of place, like a sandwich shop. I'm not tipping the guy who just runs the cash register.

I have never not tipped my barber. I'm a regular and he hooks me up every single time. Haircut costs $15, I hand him a $20.

No-tip policy yet you pay with a credit card and they lose 3-5% of the cost in credit card fees. You should at least tip them that if you are going to pay by credit card at a small place like that.

I rarely tip anyone but the barber prevents me from looking like a shambolic mess so it's easy to round it up and pay the guy/girl an extra £2 on a haircut.

I gave my tattoo artist £20 after my last tattoo because it looked fantastic, I hope he isn't encouraged to do more amazing work because of that.......

Americans are hypocrites, they don't tip because they care about the low income, they just tip because they're afraid that someone spit in their plates or fuck their haircuts when they come back the next time.

Oh this is such utter horseshit. Tipping is done to reward for someone's service. Hypocrites my ass, there's nothing hypocritical about it. That someone doesn't spit in the food is a nice side benefit of that mutually understood agreement of this part of the culture.

NONE OF YOU WITH THIS ATTITUDE HAVE EVER WORKED IN A SERVICE INDUSTRY and I hope when you do, you get stiffed constantly.
I have, multiple years, and I don't tip with the exception of when I receive superb service. I had a boss who paid me a decent wage.

Man it's so crazy to see the difference in culture between america and where im from (UK - north)

America - Tip someone because they did a good job

Me - expect someone to do a good job in the first place

2 questions -

did you expect them NOT to do a good job, and you are surprised by this so you pay more?

If someone didnt tip you, next time around would you purposely do a shit job to get your own back?

I really cannot relate to this at all, it seems absolutely bizarre

Yep this. American System is a load of bullshit that expects everyone to carry the load. How about normal wages and letting the tip be a reward for outstanding service? Really glad that I dont have this shit here. People get their money and are able to get bonuses on top for their work and people are able to just pay what they expect like it's expected to be. But you guys also have the whole taxes after buying things cause of your states which is also a confusing system.

Or we could Talk about your amazing healthcare for your workforce.

At the place where I get my haircut, after swiping my credit card, the barber hands me their phone and the Square app asks if I'd like to tip 15, 20, or 25%.

I have a no-tip policy for hair cutters because I don't want to enable tips becoming an obligatory thing for the hair industry, like restaurants.

So naturally, I press "NO TIP", hand the phone back to this person while avoiding eye contact, exchange a quick "thanks" and casually speed towards the door asap. It never stops being awkward.

Anyone else experience this awkward interaction every few weeks too?

PS. Food trucks do this too, but I feel way less awkward about it since...why the fuck would I tip a food truck?
Whether you want to enable tipping or not, not tipping isn't going to help. You're just paying someone less bc you're cheap and using this as a false sense of morality.

I always tip for haircuts, but it's becoming annoying seeing that particular interface at all the newer fast food establishments. There are 2 sandwich shops I like to go to. One of them has the setup in the OP when paying via credit card. The other place just swipes your card and gives you your receipt. I'm way more likely to drop something in the tip jar for shop 2, than shop 1. I'm not tipping you for my $6 sandwich that I stood in line for and am walking out the door with in a paper bag. You're out of your damn mind.

It's a horrible system but it's a vicious cycle that's hard to stamp out unless the business itself makes changes and there's no incentive for businesses to make that change. The thing is not tipping isn't the solution to get this change made because the only person who gets hurt is the service worker who now ends up with less money. It's much more productive to write comments to the company (or get a campaign going if it's a local business) to make those changes so you don't have to tip in the future.

Untrue. Tipping is done because it is the norm.
The reward for services rendered is called the payment. The reward for good services is called getting repeat customers.

Tipping is also a very convenient outlet for racism and sexism, fwiw.

I haven't read through this thread because, why? But hair stylists actually have to go to school to get certified in order to do that job. My wife is a hair stylist and makes about a dollar an hour more than minimum wage with the expectation that tips will raise her wage. This is really common in the industry.

You should re-think your concept of tipping.

I can see where if you were just popping into regular supercuts or something to get a cookie cutter haircut then yeah whatever don't tip if you are a jerk.

but if you are going to the same place every time? Tip. If you are seeing the same guy/gal every time? TIP.

These are showing up more and more at Cafes and grocery stores. I have no problem dropping change in a can when i buy a cup of coffee but having the barista turn the screen around and stare at you is fucking weird.

It actually keeps me from tipping because I'm not tipping 15% when Im just getting a cup coffee or a hot chocolate.

Do we have to start tipping people when you buy something at Best buy? target? Macdonalds?

PS tip your Barber :p
