Pressing "NO TIP" when paying your barber is one of the most awkward interactions

Haircuts are one of the things that most people would agree is something you actually should tip for everytime (Atleast in the US).

My haircut is $15 and I always give him $20.

Been tipping my barbers 20% since I was a teenager.

1: IIRC, Square has that tip thing built in for most if not all transactions. I think you have to set your account to not ask

2: I don't tip food trucks either

3: But I do tip someone who takes scissors to my head

On the fence here. Considering I can pay anything from £8-£20 whether I go to a barber or a more professional place and the barbers takes like 5 minutes and the peofessional place maybe 15... I feel like what your paying is enough. I always tip now though just to not be a dick though! I wouldn't mind getting my hourly wage (£8 :( ) for literally 5 minutes work...

I use a barber who does an excellent job and used to charge $1.50 (this is a fairly normal price where I live), so I would give him $2.50.

He increased the price to $2, but I still give him $2.50.

My barber does my hair and my mustache + beard. 30 dollars all in, I always tip him 25%. He does great work.

Though he is Black. Black barbers are the best in the business. All ethnicities should go to one.

I have a no-tip policy for hair cutters because I don't want to enable tips becoming an obligatory thing for the hair industry, like restaurants

I don't believe this to be a real thread, but I'll bite. Tipping your barber or hair stylist has been a thing forever in the US.

I dont tip my barber either and I go to her once a week.

Dont barbers get paid a regular wage, why would you tip them?

If you live in the US/Canada, nope.

They rent their chair in the salon/shop and pay a percentage of the house cost, usually a big percentage, for each customer they see. Most barbers make like 4 or 5 bucks per cut if they're lucky, depending on the services.

I don't think I've ever given my barber less than $10. He's done my hair for 20 years and does an excellent job. I don't mind helping him with his space rental.

Lol

I have to sneakily tip my barber cause he tries to refuse my tips.

I give him a larger bill and say no change and bail before he can make a fuss. Good dude. Tip your barbers you asses

At the place where I get my haircut, after swiping my credit card, the barber hands me their phone and the Square app asks if I'd like to tip 15, 20, or 25%.

So naturally, I press "NO TIP", hand the phone back to this person while avoiding eye contact, exchange a quick "thanks" and casually speed towards the door asap. It never stops being awkward.

Anyone else experience this awkward interaction every few weeks too?

PS. Food trucks do this too, but I feel way less awkward about it since...why the fuck would I tip a food truck?

Wtf?

Tip your god damn barber bro. Youre too late, their wages are already based around tips

Do you tip those weird fields you be wandering in?

As a guy who has male pattern baldness, I unfortunately haven't had my hair cut in 18 years. I just got my own pair of clippers and went to town.

However, I have an opinion on the matter, but it depends on whether you went to a true barber or if you went to one of those assembly line hair cutting places.

Barber = yes
Assembly Line = no

If you're getting a shave with a straight edge = ABSOLUTELY YES.

Barber: What'chu need?

OP: I need that "I have a no-tip policy for hair cutters because I don't want to enable tips becoming an obligatory thing for the hair industry, like restaurants."

Barber: I got you, fam.

Not tipping your barber is an asshole move. Ask them how much they pay the owner for a chair.

Shit man, always tip your barber. Especially if you are a regular. You are at their mercy when you're in the chair. Plus it's just a civil thing to do.

You get your haircut and don't pay with cash? My barber has a square app that that lets me swipe my card, but not handing my guy a crisp 20 after he lines me up just feels wrong.

Swiping your credit card earns you some reward points

I think anyone who disagrees with your behaviour here is disagreeing with whether or not tips are currently an obligatory thing for the hair industry. I think they are. I'm not even from the US and I've tipped for every haircut I've ever got. I tipped when I started paying for my own haircut around age 13 and I haven't stopped.

(More generally I think tipping is good. I'm poor as hell and I still have more than enough money to take a slight hit on pricing of consumer goods in return for helping out largely unpaid employees in the service industry. So I don't have awkward interactions as it relates to tipping anyone, because I almost always do.)

Tipping if for suckers

Like, do firefighters get tipped for saving children from burning buildings?

No

So why would I ever tip a waiter.

My views on this are very black and white

Cuz their pay is lower and designed for tips.

OP knows this though. That's why he can't look like he barber in the eye. He knows he's ruined Christmas. All to save $2.

I understand not tipping fast food cashiers because they don't prepare or serve food... But a barber that cuts my hair for a while and chats with me every month? You're a cheap ass OP. Do you see the same barber every time? Do they half-ass your haircut?

I don't understand this mentality at all. Cutting hair is their job. Most people don't get tips and are expected to do their jobs correctly.

Also, why not just raise the price then?
