Pressing "NO TIP" when paying your barber is one of the most awkward interactions

So we can't eat the quality meals you eat because we can barely treat ourselves to it once and while without tipping?

A lot of people with a silver spoon in their mouth I see.

Personally, I can afford these places but choose not to eat there because of this messed up concept that you pay a percentage of the bill. So it's $20, tip 15% or more, bill is $100? 15℅ or more. For what? Same service I get anywhere else.
I don't need to pay someone for giving me rude service or putting on a face just to earn a tip. NOW every once in a while I'll go out with my wife to eat dinner, I believe someone who just has enough and wants to eat nice should be able to eat a restaurant without having to tip.

Nobody forces you to tip, but at the same time nobody is forced to give you anything above a bare minimum service

Again, if that $5-$7 breaks you, you should probably just stay home.

Annnd, to the others above arguing for a "real wage" for servers have obviously never worked in the service industry in their damn life. I used to go in, work for 4 hours, pull a hundred bucks and go home. Yeah, I'm really pining for the 12 buck and hour wage. GTFO
 
The thing I find confusing is that you clearly believe you're helping a cause you believe in.

You are clearly making a self motivated decision. You aren't involving yourself in politics, or actually doing anything to fix this "problem"

People just shouldn't think that non tippers are a disgrace.

I used to go to Coffee bean and it always asks for tip when paying with card. Avoided this by paying with cash from then on.
Getting a haircut? I take cash.

This has nothing to do with silver spoons. In almost all restaurants in America it's customary to tip 15% - 20%. If you can't afford that then the reasonable thing to do would be to go to a cheaper restaurant.

These people are allowed by law to be paid lower than minimum wage because tipping is expected unless you receive awful service.

If you are going to continue to not tip, I suggest telling the manager before you sit down and make sure he is still okay with you patronizing the establishment.

If what you are doing isn't wrong, it shouldnt be an issue, right?
 
The service industry, including restaurants and barbers, is based on the honour system of tipping. Not being part of the industry, it is very easy to say "why don't they just charge more so I don't have to tip", or "if I and others don't tip, then the system will have to change".

But even at bare minimum service, people still expect a %15 tip because that is their salary. Company owners need to stop sucking and pay their employees a legit wage. Then tips can go back to being a nice thing to do for someone that did a great job instead of a mandatory fee.

Wasn't there some kind of regulation recently that food service would have to be paid minimum?
What sucks is different establishments have different rules on the tips you receive as well. So even the tips they get gets deducted by management. Then who are we really paying for the service provided?

I'm talking to people who refuse to tip at all; the pay system is based on the servers getting 15% tips at minimum so that's the figure I am quoting.

You're moving the goalposts here. Tipping is the lifeblood of the service industry in America. It's an honor system, for sure, so you can continue living your life without tipping, but don't expect any pats on the back for it. There's nothing noble about your mindset.

edit - also, do you consider minimum wage to be a living wage? Because I sure as hell don't.

You can advocate that owners treat their bottom line better and at the same time tip until otherwise.

Just because people expect a tip for bare minimum service doesn't mean you have to lol.

What you're referring to is a server tipping out to the bartender, busboy or host. Typically, the server claims their tips at the end of the night for tax reasons. The tip out is usually taken from the paycheck (which is usually nil because it pays taxes). The server pays a percentage of their tips to the people that help them do their job. You don't know what you are talking about.

If you have $50 and the meal is $8, are you going to give up a few dollars to the server you know who's making little pay and lives off of tips? Just think about it right now. If you feel shame in giving the server some dollars there knowing that, it's less about the system but more about how you feel towards helping others tbh. Dudes just making excuses in this thread like "they're in that system" and "they have that job they did it themselves" when they really need to say "well damn I know what they're going through but I don't give a damn about it because they did it themselves." Just be honest.

That "I'm here to take a stand" against stuff attitude ain't going to do a thing to these people who have a rent due in a few days and they're low. Besides that never in my life do I recall someone actually ASKING for a tip. There's always a spot at the bottom of ticket for it and/or the barber always gives you the money back. They just don't say anything if you don't tip.

Apparently we can't discuss the topic at hand without being insulted and expressing our thoughts on the matter.

As I've posted before, I DO tip, I can afford to eat at this places. I've LIVED with people who live off tips for a living.
No I don't think minimum wage is enough to live by.

I always tip my barber and servers at restaurants.
 
I usually just explain to the waiter that I won't tip them because I want to fight the broken tipping system. The waiter always understands, and any fellow diners who hear my reasoning will immediately start clapping.
 
Honestly most times I tip at least 15 to 20 percent even for base service. I worked in the industry in my teens I know how it is for them. However if I get abysmal service I will look them dead in the eye and hit zero no second thoughts.

It isn't insulting to say that you don't know what you are talking about when you plainly don't. Don't insinuate that the tip money doesn't even go to the server.

This is me too except Im more of a 20-25 guy. Despite my rage at the non-tippers here, as someone who has worked in the in industry, if my waiter is garbage I have no problem not tipping them.

If you don't leave a tip at all, it's possible to misconstrue that you just don't know or that you don't believe in it.

If you leave very little and speak to management you give a very clear indicator that the service was shit.

The insulting part wasn't directed at you but others. I just didn't bother quoting them so they don't feed off it.

I didn't go around making conspiracies, it was merely a question.

To be honest what gets to me is the fact that having lived with and being close friends with servers is how much they complain about the tips. And as you mentioned Apache in your post, those people get filtered by the system... Eventually.

Keep it level headed, we're just keeping the topic of not tipping and the reasons in this thread.

Imo not tipping your barber is worse than not tipping your waiter. At least you are and may never see that person again. Your barber? He'll be there the next time you come in.

There is a pizza place in Vancouver, it's the best in the city and i'm technically outside of their delivery zone. The one time I convinced them to come on a slow day I gave them like a 25% tip. Now they deliver to me any time I call and we're bros.

Don't be so cheap.

Is using a card to pay for a bill, including tip, kinda frowned upon? Because I don't usually carry cash.
