Pro character designer breaks down and fixes Concord character designs

Edmund

is waiting for Starfield 7
Very interesting watch.

There's another video where he compares the designs of the characters in Overwatch with the ones in Concord which is worth a watch as well.

There's a simpler fix that would also work as a marketing stunt:

that timestamp here is the best part LOL, and it actually demonstrates perfectly what is wrong with their designs. I thought he was only doing a bit for the lulz, but it works really well as an example

The guy started it off with a different video. And Asmongold reacted to it. Good videos too.

I havent watched his latest video but will now.

IMO, I think he's partially jumping on the Concord hate train for clicks. He does make interesting points about design, but in his various videos he'll plug his own games. Also, he keeps stressing how he's being serious and not trying to insult Concord, but then he'll sarcastically call Concord the best selling award winning game with a straight face (see his YT description or he might say it at the beginning of a video). So he is kind of ragging on it.

Art is also subjective. I like WWII and modern military shooters with realism and greys, browns and green camo uniforms. Captain Price kind of stuff. No cartoony game whether it's Concord, OW, Destiny or Splatoon will ever look good to me.

At the 6:30-ish mark he goes over height of characters in the poster pic. I dont think the avg guy cares.

It's really cool how "WE WANT MORE DIVERSE CHARACTERS IN GAMING!" now translates to purposely making characters ugly and unappealing.

People dunked on the high number of bald space marines and everyman Nathan Drake types but at least they weren't actually unpleasant to look at.

What was wrong with how Overwatch did it? A diverse bunch who looked cool, why is it got to be purposely bad now?

He's trolling and sarcastic, but also not wrong either.

Part of it maybe ideology but they also diversity/gender balance the teams instead of hiring the best they can get. "Bozos" as Steve Jobs words it.

Sounds like he is still trying to decide his lane as a content creator.

Will he be like Legal Eagle and go by the book on what works, what doesn't, and what makes logical sense?

Or will he be more comedic and sarcastic about it like the Pitch Meeting guy?

For Concord to be a game no one is playing it gets a lot of attention around here 😳
In order to improve, we shouldn't be afraid to criticise and roast. I'm a Sony fan. I want them to do better. This better be a learning experience for them.

Overwatch girls are simply sexy.
The dev is a weird guy. It's hard to understand his overall message. In his latest video, OW characters are awesome looking at them for the first, despite never playing the game.

But then at the end of his older video he doesn't like them..... Unless his sarcasm is way over my head.

Good lord. Every single character look like they had 5 minutes to dress up for Halloween and just grabbed whatever random stuff they found in the basement.

Best thing about this is that Jerrell is just an obscure solo developer who makes games for dead consoles. I can't speak for him but his concord stuff feels very tongue in cheek to me. I've donated to Jerrells patreon for a few years. Dude just does his own thing. Great guy, very hard working. He made the final WiiU game. Horror game that really takes advantage of the WiiU's uniqueness. (Silver Falls: White Inside Its Umbra)

I've made a few threads on projects he's worked on. He had a Kickstarter a few months back, stretch goals included versions on tons of retro consoles. He received a lot of hate from some parts of the internet and it was really a shame cause he's not a scam artist, just an unknown solo developer. Nice to see him getting some exposure and new subscribers.

Yeah I think the guy isnt actually a designer. Just a youtuber maybe? I dunno, all I know is, hes got the other video also bout concord and the ending to that video is pure gold lmao.

Eh, he doesnt seem that knowledgeable, dunno. It's not the colors or tones f characters that made overwatch popular. It's the sexy character models, the asses and whatnot. Tracer and Widowmaker alone boosted the sales considerably, porn helped as well.

True, but he is right about the tone and colors as well.
The designers at Blizzard definitely knew what they were doing with the "assets" of certain characters. Makes me wonder what they could really do if untethered by Blizzard. Could they perhaps rival the First Descendant? :)

What these people has always wanted is this:

* Women should not be as feminine.
* Men should not be as masculine.
* Minorities, of any kind, should be a majority.

Why? I don't know. I assume it's about representation. Maybe you're not into escapism and want representation and you're a gay deaf feminine black guy in a wheel chair with only one leg?

Problem is, most just want normal and cool characters without disabilities and gender confusion and then there is a clash and games like Concord drops below 40 concurrent players.

Think the problem is that they spent too much time in school, and not enough in the real world...

Teachers would be harsh about how hitting the big leagues, which would mean trying to sell strong appeal(which includes sex appeal). I would be willing to guess these are the type of people who would be saying "these teachers are all wrong" or whatever the namecalling they got(like calling them sexist, bigots, etc).

I am afraid in the ESG/DEI afflicted world we live in, they will learn all the wrong lessons. If they just made the characters not actively repulsive and hideous, they could have atleast gotten half a mil sales and some leeway to turn this game around. That is definitely not the lesson they will learn though. Honestly, staying the hell away from (current day) politics is the way to go, if you want your game to not suffer in the culture wars. People have had enough and are voting with their wallets (also see Acolyte and Lord of the Rings S2).

Well thats not going to be everyone, I'd argue even saying "just want normal" seems odd, they want a character that basically has nothing unique? lol

Thats like saying this isn't allowed

I mean, "most just want normal" lol

So...like what you like, but I don't get this whole "most just want" I don't know what "most" want, the artist should create what they want and if you like it, cool, if you don't, thats fine too. I don't think anyone though should be advocating for just "normal" and then start crying about boring designs lol

So I'm fine with the freedom to create anything even if it results in some flops, better that then some odd by the books, by the numbers type game seeking to make "normal" as not to offend. So I'm fine with artist creating how they want and taking that risk, personally didn't see anything wrong with any of those designs and don't see anything to "fix" , all of this comes down to subjectivity, there is no right or wrong or fix or correct or anything here.

It just is.

If someone doesn't like it, I have no issue with it, its when folks start trying to force this idea of "fix" or "correct", the only people that know what its suppose to be, is the artist. They decide what it is or isn't, using this dumb logic, it would be rejecting the design of the Simpsons cause I mean, its not "normal" cause people are not Yellow, it forces this idea to conform, copy the same designs that exist and tries to attack and harass everyone to create a certain way.

So I want this level of freedom in gaming, as we have in other art forms, if someone doesn't like it, they are free to play something else, but artist do not need to conform or alter their work for anyone.
