PROMETHEUS UNMARKED SPOILER THREAD!

The only on I'm aware of is the Enuma Elish, but that's quite different. The universe was created from the dead body of the god Tiamat, and mankind from her husband's blood.

I'll have to look it up but I think it was a Native American folk tale/creation myth. Not the Hopi but another tribal culture. It went like this:

First man was created and he was dumb, he just shuffled around with no awareness causing the creators much chagrin at their "flat" creation. After mucho tinkering it was decided that they needed elan vital and the only way they could get this was by killing that which already had it (ie a g_d) so they tricked one of their boys, capped him and used his blood to animate us which led to the human race being the way it is.

If i recall correctly ridley beings the making of prom. on the bluray by saying he didnt made more scifi movies because everything has been done at some point, and you would need to take stuff from other people.

Nice insight, but still a bit weird that two big movies released at the same time used very similar archetypes for "the adversary". Maybe I think too much...

Hey dudes.

Just watched this today, loved it, no complaints. I'm not very picky. =P

I think I have a somewhat decent grasp on what the fuck went on here and how it relates to the Aliens universe, but... one question. I didn't see it in the first couple pages.

Do we know what the deal was with the ship take-off and the suicidal engineer in the opening?

Supposedly a ritualistic sacrifice in order to create life on whatever planet that was (probably Earth).
You see the engineers DNA break down because of the black goo, and recombine diferently after it hits the water.

What ship taking off? At the end? Noomi and Fassbender's head take off to find the engineers home planet.

I also loved the movie.

Ahh, okay!

That makes sense. I admittedly didn't watch the whole DNA stuff at the beginning too closely.

The ship I was referring to was the disc shaped object in the beginning that takes off while the engineer is dying. Probably dropped him off to do his thing.

I assume from the scenes on the bridge of the ship during the movie that they must have seeded life on several different planets?

Yeah, thats why they are nicknamed "engineers". They supposedly are advanced enough to create and manipulate life.

I never commented on this movie because I never could describe my thoughts accurately. I still don't know what I thought about the movie. I enjoyed watching it. Kind of annoyed by the fact that I left with more questions than answers. But it was still enjoyable.

Some people just 'get' shit quicker than others.

Sometimes you miss completely easy stuff, other times you pick up on super complicated things on the first go. It happens. =P

Can you elaborate on what was poorly explained or maybe not at all? I'm genuinely curious

Oh I know it does. Happens to me too, and sometimes on pretty obvious stuff :p
I'm actually referring to people who seem well informed, participate in threads like these and are STILL pissed off and unclear about what this movie was about.

I don't mean it in a way like I didn't understand something in the plot. I meant it in a way like there were these questions that were posed. Who left these marks, did they create life on earth, and so on. That stuff was pretty much answered.

But when it's all said and done there are even more questions posed. Why do they want to destroy earth. What/who are they. What are their intentions, etc...etc...

And just when the movie was all like LETS GO GET DEMM ANSWERS the movie just ends. Guess we wait for part 2 for more information.

I've seen a lot of people online and in real life say "it has more questions than answers" but I'm not sure what they mean. Anything that's unexplained or doesn't make sense is a result of a forgotten plot thread or a plot hole because it's a bad movie.

Ah, okay. Yeah, the movie sets itself up for a sequel I guess. I dont mind this though, leaves an aura of mistery surrounding these creatures.
And honestly, I dont want them to hand me over all the answers in the sequel. Leave it vague enough for me to fill in the blanks.

I mean, is the reason they want to destroy us really THAT important?
If I was responsible for scripting the sequel I would most likely not outright answer this question either. I would emply it or just leave it up for you to decide.
In my mind I think we are a failed experiment they want to eliminate before our civilization reaches a higher level of infuence in the universe. Maybe they are searching for the perfect, purest creature and we were another failed attempt they have to clean up.

But thats just me. Others have diferent theories, and thats whats really fun to me.

It seems to me if we were just an experiment of sorts that MIGHT have to be cleaned up eventually, they would have some kind of concrete, sound, and tested solution in place from the get-go. Not seeding life and then starting work on the creatures that were meant to destroy us but ultimately turn out of control and end up wiping out all life on their 'base' planet.

But, there's nothing to say they hadn't been working on the creatures before they started seeding life, who knows.

Saw it myself for the first time yesterday. "Questions will be answered" my ass.

Movie was awful. I could deal with the lack of 'answers' if the movie had other things going for it, but nope. It was boring, not scary/tense and confusing. Even the special effects and art were meh.

I do have a crush on Noomi Rapace now, though. Not sure what it is about her.....

Just finished watching it. Pacing was good the first half of the movie but then somehow felt off the second half. It's almost as if the movie should have been slightly longer.

This is obviously an Alien prequel but I guess I'd have to ask why the facehugger was so big. Eh, guess it's just the evolution of the lifeform/xenomorph itself.

Curious if another movie is in the making or if this is just left open ended. Would like to find out why the Prometheans wanted to destroy us.

Oh, always wanted to chime in to say that the whole pulling out of the squiddie from Shaw's stomach wasn't as bad as I thought I was going to be. I've seen worse on the screen and while it might of produced a slight cringe, I really expected something a lot more horrifying the way people were talking about it here.

So, a Prometheus 2, eh? According to Metacritic (yeah I know.... Metacritic) it only has a 65. Oh okay, it has a 74% on Rotten Tomatoes.... I dunno. Anyways, I guess it did well enough for them to go ahead with one. Is it Ridley Scott back at the helm? I'd be interested just to see where they go with Shaw trying to find the Prometheans home world so she can ask them, "Hi. I'm a human from Earth. Why are you deciding to kill us?"

Won't stop picking the right nation
I think that was creating life on Earth.
I think the correct answer is that, just like in the Spaihts script, the engineer was "creating" human life. There are two reasons: 1) Plant life already exists on Earth, which you can see in the opening shots. 2) It makes more sense if the opening events occurred 10,000 or 100,000 years ago, instead of 4 billion. That's far too much time to explain away.

Of course, that opens up the question of how the DNA was transmitted to humans, or humanity's ancestors, but the final movie sacrificed a lot of its coherence, whereas the Spaihts script is more meticulous and detailed. Just about everything in his script is clearly explained. (Despite that, I actually think it's worse than the finished film)

Just watched the movie and I'm about to go through this thread. Two things off the top of my head though:

1. I love how she just basically gets an abortion and then no ones like "hey why are bloody, why is your stomach stapled shut."

2. How she gives birth to this giant squid thing that then somehow gives birth to the first xenomorph. Didn't really make much sense.

edit: just read a random page. Apparently the giant squid was a facehugger? Why was it so big?

I skipped this in the theaters after hearing everyone talk about how disappointed they were and how little it made sense.

I kind of regret that now... I picked up the Blu-ray from a Black Friday deal and just finished watching it. I thought it was pretty goddamn incredible and nothing really seemed confusing to me plot-wise.

The only thing I didn't really like about it was the very end when the "Alien" looking monster popped out of the dead creator guy's body. It felt like a way too obvious of a nod to fans of those movies. I really hope nothing becomes of that direction, because I was much more interested in the whole humans finding their creators aspect of the film than any relation it might have to the Alien movies (officially, it's unrelated, right?).

I really hope they make it to the engineer's home world if a sequel happens. I'd like to see some answers about what these creators are all about. Do they just go around populating worlds and coming back to exterminate the races they deem failures?

No officially they are related. Ridley didn't want to call this a prequel, but he stated it takes place in the "same universe" as Alien. What he more or less meant is this is not the story of Ripley or hunting the Xenomorphs themselves. Besides the Xenos, you have Weyland Corp and androids with white blood so it makes it pretty obvious. I'm sure they will continue to focus on the Engineers anyhow assuming the sequel gets made.

Reading back through this thread, it seems like the people who were disappointed with it are overwhelmingly fans of the original Alien and Aliens. I liked those movies, but I've only seen them a couple of times a long time ago, so I'm not a superfan. It seems like that allowed me to enjoy Prometheus a lot more than some.

Most of the criticism had nothing to do with the movie being part of the series though.

Yeah, if anything, the movie would have been better had it not tried to associate itself with the baggage of the Alien movies. Instead it tried to be two things at once.

Most people who saw the movies are overwhelmingly fans of the original Alien and Aliens, so you're already working within that set of people. That having been set, yes, being associated with Alien and Ridley Scott tends to set an extremely high bar. If I hadn't heard of the franchise or the director before seeing it, I might've been more pleased.

I'm a huge fan of the Alien franchise, especially Aliens and I liked Prometheus. I rather much have Prometheus as a part of it then Predator with the AVP series. But, I'm also a fan of the whole ancient astronauts/ancient aliens theory, so I guess it stuck with me that way too.

There has to be a reason they promoted it with the tagline "questions will be answered" for it's home release.

I saw it on Amazon. Never saw it in the theatres. Were there extra scenes added?

I didn't have much problems following the movie either. Promtheans created life on Earth. they also created some kind of biological creature(s) for purposes unknown which probably have to do with biological warfare. We go to a planet and find out they don't care too much about us.

I mean, I understand it but it just leaves a lot open. Like, why do they hate us now? Why do they want to return to Earth to kill us? I guess that may get answered in the sequel. Still, nothing too hard to follow.

I'm glad the documentary addresses what went on with the writing because it basically confirms that Lindlof thinks he is like a god among writers even though the only reason he got the gig was because Fox was too pussy to let it ride with a unknown writer.
Yeah, I'm watching the documentary right now. It's painfully obvious that Prometheus was damaged by executive meddling. Thanks to them, Lindelof was able to trot in and mangle the original concept, producing a Frankenstein of intriguing but half baked ideas. When will those executives realize that the key to making a lucrative movie is to hire the right people and then stand well back and let them do their thing? It worked for Lord of the Rings. It worked for Avatar. It probably would have worked for Prometheus.

Now all we can do is shake our heads and long for what could have been. I love Prometheus, but it could have and should have rivaled the original Alien as a true sci-fi classic. I hope Ridley manages to run a tighter ship while making the sequel.

Hey sorry if the answer is in the thread somewhere, but I honestly wouldn't know where ot start looking.

I read on a few sites that Scott is against a full directors cut. Is this true? I was holding out on the slim chance that they would release a directors cut and it would "save" the movie from it's own sillyness. I was at least hoping that they would flesh out some of the character's motivations a bit better.. It worked for Kingdom of Heaven right? Theatrical cut = crap, directors cut = good.

Oh well. This may have been one of the most disappointing movies I've ever seen. It could have been SO good. I still don't mind it, but that's only because Scott is a master of atmosphere and attention to detail. It is a beautiful movie.

Watched this movie for the first time a few weeks ago not knowing much about it other than the director and that is was probably a space sci-fi of some sort.

Loved the movie although a time or two it did freak me out. Great special effects and story, although like many I feel there are many unanswered questions about the engineers and their motives.

When that last scene played out and an alien-looking thing popped out of the engineer, I was like "woah!" I wasn't sure what was going on. Was this the great cliff-hanger twist? Was it a twist to give a nod to the Alien franchise but with no sequel intended. Was it officially related to the Aliens movies?

I had seen bits and pieces of previous Alien movies on TV, but never the whole thing, although I did know what they looked like and that they came out of people's bellies. All in all a great surprise at the end there - like I said it was a wonderful "woah" moment that enhanced the experience of a great film. If I had known it was in the same universe as the Aliens movies I probably wouldn't have been stunned by that last sequence.

Had some problems with the movie, but overall it was a great watch with the perfect "twist" ending for me.

I love the reason he gives:
"I can’t do what J.J. [Abrams] does. I don’t have the capability. I’m usually very single-minded creatively. I can only be working on one thing at a time."

Translation - "I am not a very good writer and they don't want me back."

I'm super LTTP, and would have made a new thread... but this just got bumped today.

So, I've never seen Alien. Or Aliens. Okay, any of them. (Well, I've seen the Predators anyway).

but that's not the point, I'm just setting the stage - consider this an opportunity, because I went into Prometheus totally blind.

I'm sure this has been beaten to death here, but this thread is massive...

Anyway, so... why do people hate this movie?
I ask, because... I thought it was really good. Beautifully done, great acting. Disturbing, for sure... my god, that surgery scene, glad I didn't see it in theaters. But why the vitriol?

Does it ruin something for Alien fans? Please feel free to connect the dots, but as an outsider, it was enjoyable. They came seeking the origins of life. They found only death. In fact, they found their own death, but righteous sacrifice saved humanity. I can buy that. We are worth saving. These Engineers didn't think so, given that guy's malice at being woken up. Maybe it's a bit cliche to come finding our makers, but end up finding a military installation with weapons bred for war, but I didn't think that made it a bad story?

I enjoyed Weyland coming for eternal life, only to come to find nothing awaits him in death. And Shaw deciding to keep her faith, because she wants to believe. It was a nice play on science vs faith there. In the end, despite everyone telling her she had given up, Shaw decides to keep searching for answers. Weyland tried to buy his way into it and - opps, bump on the noggin.

David on the other hand... what a trip. They mock him for not being able to create life; so he hatches a plan to make his own using Shaw's body? Damn. Brilliant and evil. And why did he do it? Well, 'because he can,' I suppose. Don't all children want to see their parents dead? Jeeze. I wonder if he even cared he was creating some kind of evil alien hybrid thing.

Two big questions for me, 1. what was the purpose of the first scene, showing the Engineer eat something funky and disintegrate? Was that showing the genesis of life on earth, how it's DNA was spread into the water? I imagine that was on Earth, in Africa? that's my current theory, 20 sec after I finished the movie.

Two, and we'll never know the answer to this I suspect... what did David REALLY say to the Engineer? He clearly had his own agenda - another play on an earlier discussion in the movie, about keeping that a secret - whatever he said, sure pissed the guy off though. I wonder if we'll find out what his deal is in Movie 2, because he certainly didn't ask Engineer to save his Daddy... he wanted him axed.

So, good stuff. Please feel free to enlighten, point me in the direction of a good summary, or agree. I'm not concerned with Alien spoilers either.

best explanation i've heard so far: he's gay and into the geologist/cartographer. that's why he doesn't give a shit about the most significant discovery in his field since like forever and heads of with him. would also explain his interest in snakes.

EDIT: seriously: watch Alien. such an awesome movie. i can't believe you haven't seen it yet!

Terrible characters, terrible pacing, and terrible editing. Even if you don't know much about the Alien franchise Prometheus is a mess and hard to stomach. You've got scientists on a multi trillion dollar mission to explore possible alien life on an unknown star system making dumb shit decisions. After 2.5 years of space travel they happen to stumble upon the ruins by accident? "Guys look for anything out of the ordinary" ... "Oh look, temples.. HERP DERP!" Scientists taking helmets off in would be poisonous air? Space Jesus? Geologist with mapping pups gets lost (with Biologist) after a few turns? Biologist and Geologist who both were so terrified at the sight of a long dead alien body, suddenly want to reach out and pet an alien life form that looks like a snake ready to attack? Black goo? Shaw has an alien life form ripped from her stomach and stumbles into a room where nobody seems to give a shit at all? Also, one of the scientists that she punched in the face before running to get a c section is in the room she stumbles into and doesn't say anything or react at all? Weyland? What the hell was his purpose.. to come on screen for 5 minutes then die? Captn and crew high five each other and are all excited to die in 10 seconds to ram the alien ship? Vickers narrowly escapes only to die 1 minute later on the planet running in a straight line as the ship rolls towards her? Shaw gets to the lifeboat, grabs and axe and David comm's her to tell her that the Engineer is coming close to her!!! oh my god.. this is it!! finally some awesome scene.. HEEEEEEEEEERREE WE GOOOO! ...
...

...

*queue scene
Engineer pushes open a door, takes 2 steps, 10ms later the he's near her, shaw hits a button on the wall opening the doors to the space kraken vagina squid thingy (which just happened to be there still because nobody noticed Shaw had it ripped from her body earlier in the movie) Engineer dies via space kraken vagina squid thingy mouth rape device.

*queue all sorts of footage of Shaw climbing, jumping all over the place after just having her stomach ripped open. (c sections and stomach surgery requires 1-6 weeks recovery in the real world)

*david and shaw flying into the clouds to meet space jesus's family.

*queue goblin shark xenomorph blasphemous creature as some kind of fan 'fuck ya!" moment..

Audiences laughs, crys....
