It's not even rioting really. It was just a protest but then a group of assholes decided to 'join in' and start smashing things so the police had to step in and make everyone else leave. The protesters even tried to get them to stop before the cops showed up.
 
Don't seem like the riots have a large enough crowd, when the Arab spring started we had people in the hundreds of thousands pour in. Cairo had million man protests every Friday. You need to keep the pressure on or the people will fizzle out like they did with occupy Wall Street.
 
I participated in a peaceful protest tonight, in Philadelphia.

It saddens me that I, and others like me, are going to be held responsible for the violent anarchists :/

The protest I attended was all about love & preserving LGBT and women's rights.

It doesn't matter. Keep it up, and go. Then call your Congress people and tell them to push back and hold them accountable (it's Texas, but it's worth doing anyway).

We're about to get royally screwed over, and Rules for Survival is right in point:

Dem party needs to wake the fuck up and support these anti-trump protests, help organize them and build new political candidates from them to infuse new faces into the party, just like tea party. Dem money needs to fund the organization of these protests, bus people out to them etc, just like tea party.

This luke warm dem shit doesn't work. Policy can be mid-left, but the persona needs to be loud and populist. Warren is a good model. American people don't pay enough attention for policy to be the first concern -- it's more about being inspirational and believable. Even polls for bernie supporters backed that up.

First and foremost, american people want the country to be rebalanced -- there's a desire to tear down the elites (economic and political) and there were enough people that thought trump could do it and they thought it was worth the potential dangers, but if you can combine that populism with pro-diversity inclusion and positivity, I think you have the winning formula and you leave republicans with only their bigoted core. There's a strong racist cohort in america, but the fact that trump got fewer votes than romney and clinton shows it's beatable -- but you can't beat it with the same politicians america is tired of.

Hi, i'm from Europe. Can i ask why the protests? I mean i get the reason of course, but can it realistically change something in Trump's presidency and decisions?

Not in the short term, but in the long run...you never know.
You're from Europe, so remember 89/90. Peaceful ongoing protests can (at least help to) change something.

For me it's more of a wakeup call to the people that haven't realized yet - that the situation is more dire than we realize, that it's very possible for human rights to regress, fast, that the election process is broken everywhere, and that none of this is going to be fixed without substantial active effort.

Exactly. People are fearing for their lives and are getting zero reassurance that their basic human rights will be preserved. These protests are more than warranted

It's odd how that happens in every country. In Denmark, every single protest that turns sour is blamed on "the anarchists". Like, who are "the anarchists" even? It's not like they have a membership card to the local anarchists club.

It's not called specifically that, but meeting areas exist everywhere for every political group if you talk to the right people. And they'll definitely hear about your local protest. And in America, they'll definitely fuck up everything around them and vanish as the minorities nearby get blamed and arrested.

OK, I won't pretend to know the intricacies of how people organize in the US, but based on my experience with the anarchists in Denmark, they are closely related to those on the far left, which are also those most likely to protest, since they are much more engaged than the right wingers.

But it feels as if sometimes, the anarchists, as a group, are used as scapegoats when shit like this happens, since noone wants to admit it was some of 'their own' who acted like this.

But instead of screaming, violence and all .. should those people have VOTED instead of causing havoc on the streets? I get it. If you voted ... you can protest. If you didnt ... shut up and sit it out. Nothing will change..

Is it correct that 46% didn't vote?

I'm not saying they all didn't vote. But seeing as 46% (is this even a correct number? If yes, that's pretty damn high and ... alarming, to say the least) did not vote ... you can be damn sure there are a few among them who didn't vote.

It doesn't matter if more people in Portland voted. The city has a clear voice.

People seeing one stat on the Internet and weaponizing that stat to justify already held judgments instead of using that stat as a starting point to do more independent research was a much bigger problem this election.

Because people too lazy to vote endanger themselves afterwards in protests. Sure, that makes sense.
 
Numbers really do not matter at this point anyway.

I get that people are protesting ... but it wont change anything.
