PS Portal : the screen refresh woes were supposedly fixed, and yet...

Evening boys.

So, I picked up a PS Portal again yesterday - and I say "again" because the first one I owned, I sold due to the infamous 59.96 Hz stutter, which I simply could not unsee and which took Sony® a whole damned year to fix. People rejoiced, wars ended, humanity was in balance again…

But here's the thing:

While the 59.96 Hz issue is indeed fixed, I'm noticing something else now : games just don't feel as fluid as they should. It's like they never actually reach 60 fps. Instead, the motion looks like it's hovering around 45–50 fps. It feels as if the Portal's screen can't cope with the on-screen action - almost like playing on a PC handheld where heavier games start dropping frames. Sorry if I can't describe it better, but that's the closest comparison.

Before the stutter-fix update:
Games would run at 60 fps, but every X seconds (around 10 seconds, if I remember correctly) the entire image would stutter for a moment. Frame-rate would suddenly drop, then recover, only to drop again after another interval. This made games straight-up unplayable for me, which is why I sold my first unit.

Now:
The stutter is gone but the overall framerate genuinely feels slower than before. They said the firmware update also increased the bitrate, but I really don't think that's what's causing this.

For reference:

- I have a 400 Mbps connection.

- I've assigned static IPs to every device.

- I'm exclusively on 5 GHz.

- I'm using a non-congested channel.

- My PS5 is hardwired.

The new troubleshooting option on the device itself (pretty nifty) shows 1080p, "strong" connection, 2ms delay and 0 packet loss/drops.

Remote Play has always been perfect for me on all my devices - my S24 Ultra, Tab S8+ and Lenovo IdeaPad with a Wi-Fi 6 card. That's exactly why I decided to buy a Portal again after hearing that the stutter issue had finally been resolved.

Last night, after noticing the problem, I went through the whole troubleshooting process:
checking channel congestion, changing the router channel, switching the DNS servers on the PS5 to Google's, restarting the router, etc. Then I tested Remote Play again on all my devices and the conclusion is the same: Remote Play performs better everywhere else than on my Portal.

On my phone, tablet, and PC, Remote Play is smooth and clearly hitting 60 fps.
On the Portal, it genuinely looks like it's running at a lower framerate. Even the new UI has visible drops while navigating through menus.

Games I tried :
- Ninja Gaiden 2 black we all know how fast this game is and it's the one where the "slower framerate" is more apparent.

- Streets of Rage 4 : almost perfect

- Absolum : almost perfect but the frame rate seems slower compared to streets of rage 4 for some reason.

- Ninja Gaiden sigma 1 : almost perfect/better than 2 Black.

So I'm wondering:

Is anyone else experiencing this or noticing the same behavior?

Is the shitty Wi-Fi 5 chip on the Portal just completely outclassed by the Wi-Fi 7 radios in my phone/tablet and the Wi-Fi 6 one in my laptop?

Is its locked 60 fps display simply struggling compared to the 120 Hz and 164 Hz screens of my other devices?

Do PS servers have any involvement in Remote Play motion fluidity?
Honestly, I bought another Portal because I thought the device would finally be in a good state, but apparently I'm just far too sensitive to frame-rate fluctuations for my own sanity.

Thanks.

but apparently I'm just far too sensitive to frame-rate fluctuations for my own sanity.

Most likely

Mine works fine. My PS5 is hardwired and I use Eero 6 access points. I also use remote play on my Mac, they seem the same to me. I don't know what issues you're talking about but I'll say if you're that sensitive about frame rate and measuring things in ms, it's probably not for you. I also grew up playing split-screen FPS on the N64 that ran at 20 fps on a good day.

Out of curiosity, have you tried cloud streaming instead of direct from your PS5?

I'm not sure I quite understand the issue you're experiencing. The previous issue was very specific and it made it almost unplayable for me too. Nowadays, other than the occasional WiFi hiccup I can't say I notice any FPS drops specifically on the portal and I use it quite a lot with games such as MH wilds and Mech warrior 5. Obviously games can feel less "fluid" due to the latency increase, but the framerate itself appears as consistent as on the PS5 itself.

1. Are perhaps some of the games you are playing (such as Ninja Gaiden) running with an unlocked framerate above 60? That would certainly create stutter on the portal's 60hz screen.

2. Have you tried directly cloud streaming them to see if there is any difference?

The only thing I can really think of is that all your other devices have much better screens so you perceive the minor ghosting from the portal's average LCD as a slower framerate.

The issues are likely a result of all of the above.

Sony needs to do a Portal 2 update with 1080/120 hz screen and a more powerful Qualcomm chip. Might come with next gen Orion and Canis.

Thanks everyone for chiming in.

Now, get this : I've turned off VRR and 120Hz on my PS5 aaaand...the framerate is smoother now ? how ? this doesn't make any scientific/tech sense, in fact, it's like the "just unplug the HDMI" some people suggested a year ago when people were posting about (general) lag on their Portal...

I'm going to try PS cloud/premium just to see the difference, if it's indeed better fluidity-wise, that means that there's something wrong with my setup - that, or the Portal's screen just can't cope /can't compare to my others devices' >60Hz, OLED screens like others also suggested.

Gonna give it a whirl a post the results.

Thanks boys !

Portal owner since launch and it has never been unplayable but it also has never been a perfect experience.

Game streaming sucks, even on local network. You always lose something.

That's why the Portal is only for the shitting or grinding.

That is why game streaming over wifi is only for shitting or grinding.
