PS1 Appreciation/Collectors Thread of Ugly-Ass Polygons

Been playing Grandia. I had this game as a kid but it's been a while since I last played it.

There are so many little details all over the place, just a ton of really cutely designed low-res 3D objects. It's really, really charming.
I love, love Grandia. Such an awesome battle system. I wish the game came to the west on the Saturn. I would have loved to have a long box version of it.

nice thread, i have a hard copy of R-Type Delta (and Einhander)
ordered that a while ago from irem's (agetec's) website.

also found my Lunar:silver star story complete box.

i fire up the R-13 ever so often :)

Yeah that never occurred to me. I know it was designed for PS3s but is there software that makes it compatible with PC for archiving or sharing?

I can't seem to find it but a while back I was trying to get all my old PCSX/PS2/PS1 saves onto my PS3/Vita and I found a Windows-specific tool that used that adapter.

I've been meaning to buy one myself, they're a bit more pricey than I'd like. I've been using FreeMcBoot+uLaunchElf on my PS2 to dump PS1/2 saves to USB drives, which is another option but somewhat annoying.

Loaded my PSTV up with a bunch of PSOne Classics, and I've been going on a bit of a PSOne gaming spree lately. Spent the past two days playing The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, Shadow Tower and Spyro Year of the Dragon. As much as I loved my PSOne, I missed out on many classics and I'm glad to finally be playing them.

*Spyro is only on my PSTV because I backed it up to my PC after Sony accidentally added them to the whitelist.

Is Monster Rancher 2 any good as a single player game? Don't really have any experience with the series aside from renting the first game back in the day.

It's pretty much all about monster raising so, unless you're really into those types of games, not really IMO. The game's great but there's not much of a narrative or a lot of exploration. That said, 2 is one of the best games in the series. Dragon Seeds is a cool alternative if you want a different straight up breeder.

If you want something that's like Monster Rancher but a lot more focused on narrative and the single player experience, try out Jade Cocoon, Digimon World, or Azure Dreams.

This is a game I have profoundly fond memories of playing when I was younger, but I think it's an experience that may be lost to time.

The primary mechanic of obtaining different monsters is swapping the game disc with CD's or other games. I'll never forget going through all my family's CDs that were otherwise never used and seeing what kind of unique monsters might be hidden on the shelves. We didn't have the ability to burn CDs back then or even many resources to research how to get the best monsters, it really felt like when we found a cool monster in an old CD it was something that we discovered for the first time.

I think that experience doesn't translate well in modern gaming, though. Thinking about it now I'd find it very cumbersome to repeatedly swap discs to obtain monsters, especially if I consistently got crappy ones. I'd be really tempted to just look up how to get some decent ones and that ruins that uniquely fun experience I remember.

I think it's worth trying since it's so unique, and if you can find yourself excited by the mystery of what monsters may be hidden in discs on your shelves, it can be a really satisfying experience.

Man, wasn't Heart of Darkness some weak shit?

I mean, if you're into Another World and that sorta thing, it's probably ok... I just remember hearing it was a big disappointment from like... everyone.

I tried it a few years ago after hearing people talk it up online and was definitely unimpressed. Not my type of game.

So in other news, I won like $400 at a casino this weekend and put it towards a new 55" TV. I booted up Threads of Fate and was in total awe of how good it looked. With the PS3, I really like how PS1 games look with smoothing disabled, giving it a sharper, more pixelated look. Between that, TOFs resolution, and the sheer size, I was in heaven!

i don't know you fellow ps1 GAFer's found this but i discovered a long time ago there's a prob with ps1 games playing on PS3 off a hard disc vs playing ps1 gms purchased digitally.

A and B'd them a while ago and sent it to Kotaku but they never responded...

basically playing them off the disc (no smoothing or any enhancements) looks worse than running a digital copy of an identical game from psn on a same PS3 system, fat or slim: some games it's more noticeable than others.

either there's an issue with the hardware of the ps3 playing ps1 discs or there's an added undefeatable filter on digital ps1 games.

I feel like they mentioned Heart of Darkness in another episode. Maybe their PlayStation breakdown? Anyway, the game looks really nice and if it's similar to Another World then I'm interested. The animation looks smooth and I like the background effects.

isn't it one of the JP franchises that has a significantly bigger audience in the west?

I believe so. I'm not sure if SOTN had a smaller print run than most games, or anything like that, though. And it had a Best release over there... maybe even one of those ghetto PSOne Books releases. Strikes me as the copy listed there just being super artificially inflated.

Question: Was Metal Gear Solid Integral entirely in English? As in, all of the text? Because while I have MGS and VR Missions, I just think it'd be cooler to have the Integral release. And Integral just sounds cool.

I've always missed having VR Missions in MGS games. Some of the best fun the series ever provided.

It's a really cool game if a little frustrating (it's essentially a rogue-like). It's late '90s Konami, though...so it's worth it. :)

Well its on my list now. I still want to get the GBC version fixed though.

Late christmas present in the form of Alundra. Man that village theme is awesome...they just dont make rpg music like that anymore. Its got that 90s CD era vibe you'd find in stuff on the Saturn/Sega CD/Turbo CD.

Why are Castlevania games all so expensive in Japan? Did they all just get tiny print runs or is demand really that huge?
That's a sealed copy lol.

Nocturne in the Moonlight is NOT expensive in Japan. It's available widely for under $20.

The only other PS1 game, Chronicles, is more expensive, but it's a relatively obscure late release with low print run.

Overall on all platforms, Dracula games are about the same price or less as the west, almost purely based on rarity. the Japanese Mega Drive game is hella expensive because it sold jack shit because the Mega Drive was a niche system there. Some of the Japan-only releases (Dracula X PCE, Dracula X68K etc) have worldwide demand for Japan only releases so they go for more.

Dialogue yes, options yes, script text no.

Konami games in general tend to trend towards being expensive in Japan, is my experience. Not sure why.
Not really? What games? They released almost 100 games on PSX, many cost peanuts, including many cool ones.

Mmm perhaps I overstated. I meant more that of the expensive games, a surprising number are konami. I also was conflating some US titles like suikoden which are pretty cheap in JP. But generally, shooters, castlevania and spinoffs, suikoden, are relatively expensive on their respective platforms for the most part.

I just got Ridge Racer Type 4. OST is too good. Any other good or stylish arcade racers? I know Wipeout is a good one but I believe reading that they dumbed down the handling or polished it in the sequel. Conflicting opinions. Not that Type 4 has the greatest handling.

I always liked how they didn't look like normal CD Cases, but I know some people prefer the thin cases.
They are nicer. Some Japanese games use the same cases too (eg Dracula X).

The only problem is when it breaks, you can't just grab the front of any CD case, you have to get an actual PS1 replacement.

I posted about a year ago in this thread about my progress on collecting PS1 games. My goal has been to collect my favorite/memorable/acclaimed 100 games on the system. It was really important for me to do it right.

I selected my games carefully in terms of titles, non-greatest hits, complete, and trying to collect games in great condition. I'm happy to say I'm currently up to 77 games (pictured below), and only 23 away from meeting my goal. I thought I'd share some pictures of my progress.

For those curious the remaining 23 games left on my list are:

Alundra
Einhander
Grandia
Klonoa Door to Phantomile
Legend of Dragoon
Legend of Legaia
Legend of Mana
Mega Man Legends
Mega Man Legends 2
Oddworld Abe's Oddysee
Ogre Battle
Silent Hill
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!
Spyro the Dragon
Spyro: Year of the Dragon
Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo
Tactics Ogre
Tobal No.1
Tomba!
Tomba! 2
Valkyrie Profile
Vandal Hearts
Wipeout XL

nice collection

^ out of that missing list, i have alundra, einhander and wipeXL is actually in my car dash CD player. that game works like a regular audio CD, w/ some of the greatest tracks.
fire starter, dust up beats, etc... prob the best wipeout music out of the series.

Morrigan Stark

Arrogant Smirk
I see Skullmonkeys missing from that list!
Otherwise solid collection/list, don't think it lacks any other essentials. ^^ Maybe Soul Blade, Rayman and Adventures of Lomax? Or the Arc the Lad games? Though I never played any but I heard good things about them.

Kudos for having Blood Omen. <3

Not only do I have Blood Omen but I have Soul Reaver 2 and the Blood Omen map from the guide signed by Amy Hennig, Simon Templeton and Michael Bell. I'm actually a huge fan of that series.

this should be here in 3 weeks via japanese slow boat:

Not even remotely worth the $130 I paid, but I have weird fascination with Time Gal and I hear Ninja Hayate is good too.
