PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Found a set of official component cables at my local goodwill for $2. I had a generic set, but it feels good to have the official cables.

I also had to replace the laser in my slim this week... Crazy how fast it boots games now!

Great find on the official cables! They're pretty expensive on ebay. Which model of slim was it? I've got a fat model (30000?) which has trouble with certain discs, I was going to change the laser but ordered some parts to see how loading from an SD card works out.

I have the 70000 series slim. CDs would load fine but DVDs were a no go. I tried to adjust the pots for the DVD laser but it didn't help.

I have a 30000 launch window model that I've had since Feb 2001 which reads DVDs but not CDs.

I'm just happy to have a system that loads without issue for once!

My 30000 is still going strong

I was mistaken. I have a 39003.

Besides getting a fat PS3 or emulating, whats the best way to play PS2 games on an HDTV/Monitor? I have a huge collection and I wouldn't mind modding my PS2 or getting an upscaler that doesn't add too much lag.

RGB SCART, whether connected directly to the TV or via a good external box. PS2 component output is really noisy, it's a distant second best.

I have mine hooked up to a Sony 4K 930D with component and I must say the games look much better than I ever thought they would. They honestly look like the PS3 remaster collections did 5 or 6 years ago.

Why is the Futurama game so expensive? I remembering renting it as a kid and I wanted to buy it, but it's pretty pricey.

Probably sold poorly with little retail interest and was consequently produced in limited quantities.

I recall buying mine for $5 at a Circuit City sale.

Game is shit.

depending on which games you're playing though, otherwise i agree

I use an HDMI converter I got on Amazon for $15 and games look pretty good on my 48" 1080p Vizio. Especially if they are modded for native widescreen and 480p.

DMC3. Fucking badass. This is actually first time I've played the game properly.

Was playing on PC, took a bit to get the setup with the "fix everything" style switcher mod, but works great now.

Gonna try the same on the hd trilogy later. Fun game. Love the quick switching.

First game is my first DMC love though.

I need to buy a PS2 someday. I've been struggling with money for years so it'll be a while until I can get a new one, but I will. I have so many games I haven't played in years and a lot I still want to play like Black, both Dark Clouds, and Rogue Galaxy.

PS2 controllers on PS3/PS4 and PS3/PS4 controllers on PS2!

Very pricey for the pair but not something I wanted to be hunting down years down the line when they inevitably stop being made and cost a fortune on ebay. Ordered from Arcade World UK.

Nice, Brook makes some great controller adapters.

Yeah I swear by them. I hope they will make PS4 to Saturn and Dreamcast adapters too.

Was thinking the same thing. Just like I hope 8bitdo will release a genesis bluetooth receiver. Thanks for this though, just tracked down and ordered a pair of the ps4 on ps2 converters.

Where can I get the PS4 to PS2 one in the US?

Edit: Arcade Shock has them in stock for $40 plus shipping.

Did the math and it would cost a little more for to me to make my own with a Raspberry Pi and Teensy board, so I bit the bullet and bought one.

Since you have it, could you clear up something, I'm having trouble finding a clear answer. Pre-release comments said it supported wired/wireless ps4 pads. Does the ps4 to ps2 converter actually work wirelessly with a ds4? It's not a deal breaker, I already ordered them, but I'm curious.

I know it wouldn't be the norm for their stuff, but I saw it in more than one place.

Focusattack was selling them too, but their site is down.

Their website says it does, is there reason to doubt it? Don't tell me I just blew $45.

No, it's just that most of their stuff that I know of is wired converters. Like the xbone to ps4 isn't wireless. Just asking for some confirmation from someone that has it.

I also don't see it mentioned on the manufacturers website product page. Did you?

It does but it seems very laggy, not as in measuring frames of lag but as in "Is this thing even working? Oh 10 inputs that got queued up just came out all at once." so not really usable. I'll try it again but my brief testing on the PS2 bios screen wasn't convincing.

Tested again by trying backwards and forward dashes with the d-pad in VF4. Too unreliable.

^ that's a shame. I'm in the market for a wireless PS2 controller but so far that means hunting down Logitechs.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate the hands on feedback, not a lot out there at the moment. Still looking forward to it, my wired ds2 crapped out, so this opens lots of possibilities.

i hear very conflicting stories about the logitechs. i found two recently new in box for around $30 off shopgoodwill.com
i still havent opened mine up yet. $30 was a bit expensive, but at least it was brand new.

The Logitech Cordless Action is good except for games that make use of pressure sensitive buttons such as MGS2 and MGS3. It's also unresponsive in Black especially the crouch button.

I bought one in 2007 and used it daily for 2 years until the buttons wore out, which was odd since I used my packaged DS2 daily for 3 years and it still works fine.

I just got mine and it works perfectly. No noticeable input lag with a DS4.

I think I know why you were having issues. The bluetooth receiver in the adapter isn't very strong. I'm surprised they don't have it where it plugs into the USB port for power. If you've got too much 2.4ghz interference it'll cause issues or if you are out of a line of sight with the adapter.

Haven't tried the DS4 yet, but played a bit with a DS3 and had no issues. I'm sitting about 8-10 feet away from the system. I think it's awesome. Tried some fighting and some racing, didn't run into anything that seemed off to me.

Been playing some retro compilations for PS2. It's really too bad most don't output at 240p. I know several do, but they're mostly ones I'm not all that interested in. I'm using s-video direct into my PVM. Pretty blurry compared to my 8- and 16-bit consoles, even the ones hooked up via composite.

Some of the Neo Geo-compilations have 240p.

Right. Those are pretty low on my interest list. Not a huge fighting game fan. Especially don't need 15 versions of the same game.

No interest in the M2 Sega Ages compilations? 240p goodness.

Very interested! That's one reason why I bought a region-free Test PS2. Unfortunately those games are way more expensive than I thought and I've still yet to purchase one....

Anyone have experience with PS2 via component to a nice Trinitron? I'm probably gonna convert my setup from a 19-inch JVC PVM to a 32-inch Wega FV300 (just a step down from the highly sought after FV310 with the high-voltage regulator). I figure it's gotta be better than S-vid for these retro games (but it's certainly not why I'm changing - just want a bigger screen).

I've used PS2 component a bit on an LCD and RGB SCART on a CRT, so I can imagine it will be a noticeable improvement over S-Video.

PS2 component is a bit noisy and will drop sync briefly, but that's not as much of a problem on CRTs, so this should work well on a Trinitron.

Also PS2 games are pretty much designed with that sort of CRT in mind, so UIs and what not tend to work well at that size and resolution.

Prolly still my favorite console ever. Just hooked it back up last week to get some classic PS2 gaming going with my lady. Leaving it up because it is just so pretty like that.

Wait. That adapter posted earlier allows you to use a DS4 on a PS2? Does rumble/Vibration work? Is there any input lag? Does it work with every PS2 game? I was looking for something like this a few months ago and couldn't find anything

Yes. Yes. No lag I noticed. Works on every game I've tried.
