PS3 2.0 firmware details posted [confirmed?]

it doesn't really take that long to scroll through games....it scrolls pretty damn fast...

but yes if you could somehow have folders where they were seperated by full games and demos..That would be a good idea.

also..great avatar. Oilers Rock.

Wow, that would be one amazing firmware update. It fixes most of my major complaints with the console. MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Cool update if true. It fixes most of my smalls complaints about the console!

When do you guys think it will be released? During Gamers Day perphaps?

All I really want is upscaled PS2 gaming. Please. 1080i is fine on my 720p LCD, and 1080p is fine on my 1080p SXRD. 480p looks bad on both.

Accessing the XMB while playing a game could have all sorts of neat features. For one, you can change the audio to accept optical input on the fly, and hopefully you can also play your mp3s while playing the game, as people have said.

I really wish they found an easier way to add friends. As far as I know, you can only add friends when you're at the XMB, and not while playing the game. Perhaps this update will let you do that on the XMB (though would you still have to manually type out their name?).

And yes, I'm still waiting for upscaled PS1/PS2 games.

PS2 games rendered (not just upscaled post-rendering) at 1080p with FMVs upscaled would make me replay a hell of a lot of my game collection. Just think of how crisp everything would look :)

oh and i hope i have my technical terms right :-X

"[PS / PS2 Settings] has been added as an option."

Could be a start. Like the PSP's PSone emulation, I expect to see a drive speed and aspect ratio option. Hopefully resolution will be there too.

Upscaling would mean the game would get rendered at 480i/p, and then the PS3 would make that image look as good as possible at 1080p/whatever, right? Or would it mean actual rendering at higher resolutions, because that would be several times awesomer.

Let's hope so.

Do the Ps1 games that are downloadable from the PS store have faster loading times?

i would hope they would because they are being competely dl'd to the HD. the access time would be a helluva lot faster than the CD read speed

720p bd playback still absent

But you can watch it in 1080i, right I watched Casino Royale this weekend, and I was sure I saw it in HD, as it looked great.

Anyway, seems like a great update.

I hope they add a way to set priorities for video modes, something like 720p first, then 1080i, then 480p. I'm sick and tired of having to manually switch on 1080i when I put a blu-ray movie in. Not that it happens often, but still.

The PSP/PS3 compatible titles play identical to the originals. The new firmware for the PSP however allows for faster load times and aspect ratio changes. Since the PS3 doesn't have these options yet, I'm assuming the next firware update will allow these features. It would make sense, after all the PSP/PS3 combo format came out after the PS3's last update, but before PSP's. Resolution however we have to hope for, can't bank on it.

awesome if true :)

This is the only part that makes me say...?

"* Friends
o You can now have multiple chat sessions."

Unlike the shitty 360 v.chat, you could do 6+ in a v.chat session on the PS3 from day one! So what is this saying?

What can you do, in terms of voice chat, on the 360? just curious..

I wonder what the new photo slideshows could be? I'm really excited to see that, since the first two are so cool. Maybe a graphical effect this time - "pop art" filter?

XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) is now accessible during gameplay.

Excellent...

sorry if asked before, but does this mean I can finally play PS3 games with my PS3?

Maybe it means it will upscale titles that only play in 720p to 1080i or more likely it's a misprint, PS3 was mistakingly put in there instead of PS2.

You have PCM/TrueHD, and that's good enough. What else do you want?

That's NOT good enough. All Fox BDs use DTS-HD Master Audio and the PS3 can't decode the lossless stream OR pass its bitstream to a receiver.

The PS3 needs to either get an update to decode the DTS-HD MA internally and send it out as PCM (preferred) or at the very least get an update to pass both DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD bitstreams via HDMI so that an external receiver can decode them.

It would also be nice to get an update to support a 24 FPS viewing mode for the new TVs and projectors coming out that support it. We would then be able to see and hear Blu-Ray movies in their purest form.

An update to play BDs in 720p wouldn't hurt either for those with 720p TVs that either won't accept a 1080i/p signal or suck at scaling.

Or, just scale the damn movie to 720p in the first place so we don't have the problem.

That just seems too complete to be true. I mean, it fixes just about everything, doesn't it?

I'N GAME CUSTOM MUSIC!!!!!!11!!

Man I wonder if we'll ever get that most basic of freakin features.. ;(

Anyway so when are we expecting all the megatons to hit?

Sounds like a great update, but damn the updates are comming fast. PS3 hasnt been out for even 6 months and already firmware is upto 2.0 :) I thought Wii was updating the firmware fast, but PS3 seems to be faster hehe.

I second this. I read some technical explanation about RSS off wikipedia, but I don't understand what this does for PS3. Anyone know?

It works with the PS3 browser :) You can get real time updates etc. Most is explained at Wikipedia.

Think podcasts.

Wikipedia said:
RSS is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated digital content, such as blogs, news feeds or podcasts.

Users of RSS content use software programs called "feed readers" or "feed aggregators". The user subscribes to a feed by entering a link of the feed into the reader program. The reader can then check the user's subscribed feeds to see if any of those feeds have new content since the last time it was checked, and, if so, retrieve that content and present it to the user.

The initials "RSS" are variously used to refer to the following standards:

* Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)
* Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91, RSS 1.0)
* RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 and 1.0)

RSS formats are specified in XML (a generic specification for data formats). RSS delivers its information as an XML file called an "RSS feed," "webfeed," "RSS stream," or "RSS channel".

SCEA pulled the original post. Would they care if it was fake?

Yes, if it was being taken seriously by people (as seems to be the case).

I still don't buy this. It's way too big of an update to be true. Just because it's well-written or written 'in style' doesn't really mean anything either.

Now that you had to go with your "maybe, maybe not" mantra you went just one way :(

;)

Apparently the OP has leaked perfect feature lists for the last 2 updates. Her name is Leah.

I buy it. To be honest there isn't anything massive in there, just a big list of little tweaks (although depending what they do, that 'video modes' thing might be useful)

No custom music, no idea how much 'integration' there is of the XMB, no streaming video from your PC, no 720p BD (not that I care, but its relevant to some).

Not that many big ticket items in there.

I'm not familiar with her history. Can anyone first-hand vouch for her? Can anyone link to posts she made about future firmware versions before the firmware was released? Obviously these questions arise.

I just think it is odd that nobody else saw this on the press site if it was there. At least no one who has come forward about it.

If this is true, I'd imagine we'd be hearing about it this week. So I'll reserve judgement until the end of the week. I just highly doubt it's true, it seems like a wishlist.

I don't know, it reads as a list of things people have been asking for. It's rather all-encompassing, adding features to nearly every piece of functionality. And true, we don't know what the limit of 'in-game xmb access' would be, but to go from none to even having any is a big step. When I see that, I'm just automatically a little sceptical...but then I tend to be most of the time :p

Putting asides subjective judgement about significance, I think the circumstances in which this has cropped up aren't exactly very solid..

I wouldn't get your hopes up about XMB access. Yes you may be able to access the XMB but that doesn't mean you can get to use everything on it. You can access XMB when playing a movie and it doesn't let you start music at the same time or a browser.

I expect that settings, music, pictures, and probably the browser will be off-limits for most games. XMB is probably just to allow you to get at buddy features, and perhaps selectively some games allocate the mem to allow for a browser or some other feature. Perhaps there is some tie-in for Home.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the firmware update. Sony seem to be very good at delivering conservative but progressive updates which add a lot of features over time.

Anyway, in the spirit of 'I want to believe!', if anyone can link to other posts she's made in this regard, that'd help a lot in determining credibility.

The one thing this has got going for it is that post-launch, updates seem to have come fairly regularly in the latter half of each month (Dec 21, Feb 28, Mar 23, Apr 19), with the one exception of January. So it seems possible we might see an update (be it 1.8, 1.9, 2.0) this week or next.

I gotta say, if that entire feature list comes true - I'm a very happy camper.

I'm still suprised that Sony hasn't included DVD upscaling yet. IMO with DVD upscaling, the PS3 would become the most attractive Blu-ray player on the market.

I dont give a shit about her rep, but if she's actually like the chick pictured here, then I believe her no matter what! Even if she says Halo 3 is coming to the PS3 :P

I actually read that differently. As in adding extra features for ps3 titles. Xmb could go into that category. Especially if the hooks for friends lists, playlists are added.

Yeah she's cute. I've got a feeling she's employed by Sony, if you look through her post history.
