PS3 2.0 firmware details posted [confirmed?]

The few Blu-ray movies I've tried, including Casino Royale, looks like utter garbage on my 1366x768 Sony 32XBR2... Grain everywhere... No better than DVD. In fact, it kinda looks worse than DVD since the grain stands out so much.

PS3 games, on the other hand, look great.

i only own one blu-ray movie (didn't have that much money after buying the ps3 and wanted to get one game too...) but it's The Prestige. Perhaps the transfer is rubbish?

Nah, The Prestige is an awesome transfer. Just check your display settings and make sure you have 720p and 1080i checked as available resolutions. Let the 720p games run in 720p, and the BD movies run in 1080i. Don't try and manually force certain resolutions. That TV is more than capable of scaling to its own native res just fine.

I didn't have 1080i checked, just 720p and 480p is selected by default. i think since i was trying to force 720p, since it cant output in 720p maybe the ps3 was downscaling to 480p and my tv was trying to upscale that signal? i dunno...

But in any case, i did what you said and the prestige looks better now.

i have the 360's hd-dvd add-on and i'm pretty impressed by that, (i really hope i don't spark an hd-dvd vs blu-ray war, that isn't the point) and in my opinion that 720p playback looks better than 1080i. For some reason i think the interlaced signal looks very grainy.

thank you for your help and suggestions though, it's greatly appreciated.

Heh, indeed. More likely that it's a guy now then and that y ou shouldn't trust anything he write.

Well at least he used a sfw pic as source.
Isn't it ironic that a PLAYSTATION 3 Firmware Update just got this young slut millions of hits and registrations... The internet. :lol

It could be that LCDs are not that good at handling 1080i signal. BR movies look mint on my plasma, really couldn't be happier, and I don't give a crap if PS3 ever supports 720p BR, as long as it lets me select 720p as the XMB/Games resolution and 1080i for movies. That way I won't have to switch display settings every time I want to watch a movie.

Is there still not hint at when we can expect in-game custom soundtracks? That's probably my most sought after feature. These things, however, all sound great - if legitimate of course.

Sounds like that "edited by SCEA" thing was a fake edit she made, according to the forum mods there. Sounds like she was trying to make it look as though Sony took her post down in order to legitimize it; this indicates to me that it's fake, even if she had a good reputation there before now. Too bad :o(

If this turns out to be false, it will automatically make all future fw updates suck in comparison.

internet must be full of losers if this average chick gets this kind of attention. almost makes me ashamed to be part of it

Quoting my own post, sorry; but in reply to you, DoctorWho, it sounds like this is definitely fake (or the forum mods at the ps forums are doing something ridiculously elaborate to cover it up).

The poster has a really good track record, the list is worded and organized way too perfectly, and who the hell makes up a feature list with something so utterly specific and out of left field as:

[Zero Unused Disk Space] has been added as an option under [System Settings] > [Format Utility].

It sounds to me like Sony is trying desperately to get an escape goat :p

Yeah, I know. I still don't know what to think because it smells fishy either way - the whole thing seemed really really spot-on, and she'd have to do some really elaborate stuff (build up a good reputation over several months and write a really spot-on list) just for a prank, but on the other hand the forum mods there would need to take over her account and edit her post several times with different accounts just to make it look fake if it is indeed real, and that seems really elaborate to me as well. I don't know, there's so much evidence pointing to it being true and a good amount pointing to it all being a ruse as well.

Two things are clear, though - if this is fake, she went to a HELL of a lot of effort to prank the Internet, and if it's true, Sony REALLY doesn't want it getting out because they'd be going to way more than their usual amount of effort to keep it quiet.

Just out of curiosity, what resolution do you have your PS3 set at? If it's set at 720p, the the Blu ray movie will playback at 480p. Set your PS3 to default to 1080i.

One possibility about the "edited by SCEA" thing if that was indeed something she wrote in and not an actual edit by such an account - they may have contacted her and asked her to take it down like in the Kotaku incident, and she could have replaced the post with "edited by SCEA" just to be snide about it, rather than out of an intent to deceive people.

Heh that actually makes a lot more sense.

i have that TV. Set your PS3 to 720p for games, and when you wanan watch blu-rays go manually in the PS3 and check 1080i.

The PS3 will drop into 720p depending on the game so I don't believe there's a constant need to switch back and forth between 1080i and 720p.

That sounds logical. Technically the SCEA wanted her to edit so she referenced them for the edit.

Yeah that makes more sense.

She made a follow up post saying she didn't post the information. Still weird since it was very well put together and seemingly well planned, if she isn't lying.

Heh, weird. The plot thickens and I still have no idea whether the info is legit or not.

indeed... list was very specific...

The plot is indeed very thick and she is probably not a she. But pretty much everything in that list are pretty likely things they would add.

That's NOT good enough. All Fox BDs use DTS-HD Master Audio and the PS3 can't decode the lossless stream OR pass its bitstream to a receiver.

Again ... who has confirmed this?

And how can it be confirmed?

Well, for now we should probably consider this debunked, but if the next firmware update does indeed contain these items, we know that Sony pretty much coerced that poster into lying about it.

edit: on the other hand the mods on that forum are viciously deleting any posts that try to question the story of what happened here, so its hard to say what is up

Two things all you A/V-philes need to know ...

DVD Upscaling: An update to include upscaling is useless until Sony improves the film-based de-interlacing. Scaling shit = scaled shit. Obviously both updates could happen at the same time ... I'm just saying there is more to it than simply adding scaling (plus, Sony has some interesting things planned for the DVD functionality of PS3 that may take a bit of time).

DTS-MA: Sony CAN'T release a decoder for this right now ... because DTS hasn't finished it.

DTS decided to retool the decoder logic, and just resubmitted it for verification with the source that will fab the decoders. >_<

just to get back to the 1080i deinterlacing thing (if anyone still cares), onix was right -- deinterlacing a 1080i film source should produce results identical to downscaling from 1080p, though a lot of tvs apparently mishandle it. here are some test results, in which the tvs that pass the "3:2 film cadence" test would handle the ps3s 1080i bd output correctly:

http://www.hometheatermag.com/hookmeup/1106hook/

my tv passes, so i probably wouldn't see any improvement from 720p bd output. that knowledge will make watching bd movies a little more satisfying. :lol

Does Sony ever plan to add PC & LAN features so I can use my PS3 with the PCs on my LAN? Don't they want to win the multi-media hub race?

Well if this update is for real, that would mean developers wouldn't have to worry about implementing the psn buddy list feature into their games since it would be accessible to the user from any game on the ps3. Which brings us to calling all cars, a first party game, which is pretty much designed as an online party game but has not even a hint of a buddy list feature on it. Maybe Sony let Jaffes' team know about the update so they wouldnt waste their time implementing it into the game since this update is coming soon. .... im sooo setting myself up for a letdown :...-(

You looked at TVersity lately? It supports the PS3.
