PS3 Controller

Anyone else notice how uncomfortable it looks? Will the big handles be in the way?

It almost look too rounded and it looks like it would definitely slip out of your hand really easily.

Yeah, only Nintendo and Microsoft can be criticized about the same shit again and again and again! Leave Sony alone!

the joysticks kind of look like saggy boobs and the handles fat arms. Playing with her would be like grabbing a fat chick by the arms, and playing with her nipples with your thumbs

hmm, you're right. when i first saw this, i thought the controller was pretty awesome. but now that you've mentioned it, it does look like it would be uncomfortable to play. thanks for the heads up

I am just waiting for a porno staring that controller to be discussed on gaf!

I am sure it will change everyoneÂ’s opinion of the PS3.

CONGRATULATIONS, YOU ARE THE FIRST PERSON TO NOTICE THIS

TELL SONY IMMEDIATELY, THEY WILL APPRECIATE THIS RARE OPPORTUNITY FOR FEEDBACK
*spits beer onto keyboard at this moment of time from laughter*

I don't know whether it's comfortable or not(haven't got to hold it yet), but what I think most people don't realize from pictures is that the size isn't proportional to DS2.
The buttons are shaped&sized like on PSP (which are a good deal smaller then DS2), and consequently that makes controller smaller then it looks at first glance.

Nope, you're the first to notice, and this subject has never been discussed here before.

No, none of us noticed this before. Thank you for making such an important contribution.

To make this thread worthwhile: I'm not all that worried, both the PS3 and controller are sure to change before launch. The controller is only a "conceptual design", and at the very least they need to put a bay for a removable harddrive in the PS3 still.

bay was likely spotted on the left side of the machine when flat in a previous thread.

jinx touch wood!

It's there, in the left side (horizontal) / bottom (vertical)

I don't know what's funnier...the creation of this thread, or half a dozen replies saying the point had been made numerous times before, as if it needed to be said a half dozen times.

Well, instead of letting this thread stay a worthless series of "no shit" posts, why not speculate on the changes Sony might make? The controller was the only product clearly labelled with a "Conceputal Design" label all throughout the show, and also didn't look up to Sony's standards as a model (they typically match colors at least, and woudl have had three, one for each system).

My hope:
Release a next gen bluetooth EyeToy as standard in the box. Have built in software that enables a hand gesture recognition system similar to a mouse, but more versitile (not just left/right clicks). Also have a change over to a virutal keyboard. The keyboard sees minimal use, mostly just for web browsing and chatting, when Sony releases those features. The hand gesture system however would play a central role in upcoming games. Instead of squad based games requiring you to click a button, scroll through a pull down menu, and choose your commands you could just make a hand gesture (i.e. holding your hand up open means "stop", waving your hand forward means go, the faster you wave it the faster they go (slow is creep, fast is full out sprinting). You could even have it set up to allow for "double tap" mouse-like features and a hand controlled cursor. Drift it over a map in one corner of the screen, make a gesture to open/enlarge the map, then make a similar gesture to target map locations. All while you have the controller in your other hand, able to make any actions available on that side of the controller (for typical righties our left hands would hold the controller, so we could still move the left analog and use the L1/L2 buttons, for lefties they can still aim, shoot, etc. in your typical FPS).

It'd even make RTS games crazy pimp on PS3. If Sony did this with EyeToy, plus talked Blizzard into throwing Starcraft 2 or Warcraft 4 on the system this generation would be over before it even started.

Actually i'm more interested in the fact it's supposed to be using Bluetooth. I haven't heard anything good about current Bluetooth keyboards and mouses in the PC market.

They're using Bluetooth 2.0 spec, which is supposedly very good.

The controller (PS3) might actually turn out comfortable. It looks different, but that doesn't mean it sucks.

as an Xbot, I hope Sony sticks with the current PS3 controller and console designs for next-gen :D

It's not as bad as Nintendo going Cartridge with N64, but it's close....

I don't see what's so wrong with the console design? Or maybe you're talking about the actual hardware rather than the case?

The controller looks pretty bad and the console design (and size) don't look too hot either, at the moment anyway. With that said, the controller might be smaller and more comfortable than people imagine and the console might be smaller than it looks in pics.

The console is smaller than the original Xbox... so I don't think size is going to be a problem.

However continue to hate on the controller... that hate is justified.

A bit of trivia... apparently this design for the boomerang controller was focus-tested for the original playstation... and canned.

PhatSaqs, that animation almost made me spray the coffee over the monitor :lol

Very true. Analog sticks are also quite a bit smaller than on DS2. Whether that's a good thing or not is hard to say without holding it.

As an Xbot, you shouldn't hope they keep the current console design :P It really looks much more expensive and stylish in real life compared to Xbox 360.

the scary part is that I don't think they'll change the design of the controller. I mean, now that I look at it again, it *could* be comfortable and it does looks unique and somewhat futuristic. What if Sony thinks its comfortable and is too confident or proud to change it based on early reaction??

Well from what I know via the conversation we're actually talking, interesting enough, about one person who designed this controller. The comment I was given was that... "yeah the controller seems weird, I'm not sure what the deal is but the person who designed is pretty much a genius so I have to give him the benefit of the doubt..."

So I guess we'll have to see. Unfortunately I don't know that Sony has ever SHOWN publically a controller that didn't become the final, then again I don't know that they've ever gotten as much apparently negative reaction as this one...

I agree. From the pics It makes the 360 controller look a bit outdated.

Who is the guy? Someone from SCE Japan?
Interesting bit of trivia, I know that during the design of DS controller, Kutaragi wanted the controller to be like that, but the current president of Sony was against it. Kutaragi came out victorious out of that battle.

So I guess we'll have to see. Unfortunately I don't know that Sony has ever SHOWN publically a controller that didn't become the final, then again I don't know that they've ever gotten as much apparently negative reaction as this one...
They did replace the silly DPAD on the first Japanese DS controller though. Not a total controller makeover or anything, but it shows they listen to criticizm.

My main concern is that the buttons appear to not come out of the controller enough. They look like they tried to streamline the entire controller, but buttons like that look like they are primed to jamming problems.
