PS3 over engineered

Knowing Sony, they'll wait till the last minute to announce a larger capacity Hard drive when it's too late for MS to do anything about it.

For playback, you need a couple of USB ports. Not 6. And you don't need two HDMI ports.

And if playback is so important, where is the firewire port?

no, you're not getting it cause you're thinking to defend sony, not thinking how real people would utilize such things. you dismiss "organizing media" as irrelevant :lol

playback of digital photos from camera... MEMORY CARDS ARE NOT UNLIMITED. you need PC space to save, print, email them to friends. after you take 200 photos then what do you do without a PC and harddrive? These need to be organized (on a PC) :D

MP3s will be stored on a PC and need to be organized, etc. (on a PC).

You don't need all that nonsense for PLAYBACK. :)

Sorry I thought we were talking about home entertainment in the living room

If your idea of home entertainment is organising photos and MP3s then I guess PS3 isn't for you :D

You obviously have no clue. pre-N is already shipping.

Uh hello?
not the bleeding edge folk who are already buying PRE-N

Obviously if folks are already buying Pre-N equipment, it's already shipping.

So not only do you not know what you are talking about... but you apparently also cannot read.

Considering most USB hubs and PC's come with at least 4-6 USB ports what's the big f'n problem? They are cheap and if Sony does decide to come out with multiple add-on's or let you support various devices I'd sure as hell like to leave those devices plugged in instead of having to swap them.

Sony has always wanted to try to push the PC to the background of the living room entertainment center... for what I think are obvious reasons... they aren't going to FOCUS on connectivity with the PC, even if it removing the PC entirely is a pipe dream...

It's funny how last week, it was all "PLAYSTATION 3 IS SUPERIOR! PLAYSTATION 3 IS BEST" and this week, we're reading "PLAYSTATION 3 IS OVER ENGINEERED! PLAYSTATION 3 IS TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE!"

Microsoft's damage control is really kicking us in the teeth...

The only CE devices that actually make good use of firewire ports are digital camcorders and most of them come with USB ports too.

No need for firewire unless you're hooking up an external HDD.

EDIT: I think it's important to clarify that Sony are trying to remove the requirement of a PC for home entertainment from the living room. Before we get anymore replies along the lines of 'you can't create, save and organise your Excel spreadsheets on PS3'

chinch... this is for you... good luck man.

make a point worth reading.

G is widespread TODAY and will be semi-obsolete by the time PS3 ships.

if you think "G" is great in 2 years i can broker oceanfront in idaho for you to buy.

Oh so now it's 2 years and now it's semi-obsolete.... make up your f'n mind loser.

The PS3 is definitely over-engineered. I know Sony will launch at a competitive price point, but there isn't going to be a lot of extra room for price drops. Just like the PSP, I think Sony designed this for a one time cost with no future price drops.

Look at just the price of plastics and connectors alone... 2 extra USB's, 2 extra ethernet, SD/CF?Sony Memory slot, and the increased size of PS3 to accomodate them all. Even if that costs say $3 per console... $3 x 20,000,000 is a lot of dough. Especially for Sony who is in a bit of a pinch right now.

I can understand the built-in wi-fi, and the gigabit ethernet is really the same price as standard ethernet, but having a built-in hub is a waste. If the purpose of having gigabit is for media streaming, then that is ridiculous. Gigabit only works on the wired port. Wireless is still limited to 54Mbps. If I have a PS3 in my bedroom and then a PS3 in the living room, each with built-in wireless, I'll be using wireless to connect the two.

The 6 USB ports is at least 2 in excess. The controllers are wireless, that leaves 4 open ports... 2 for peripherals and 2 for charging controllers. Drop the other two.

The SD/CF memory slot is overkill. Sony should have sold a card reader as a peripheral that plugs into USB. Also, MP3 players, cameras, etc. can just use USB.

The HDMI slot. Technically speaking the dual display is free... however the cost of the connector and size increase of PS3 is not.

IF Sony really wanted to gear this thing for the future, they would have dropped the useless ports and included 802.11n and a built-in hard drive. Much more useful.

no spin.... LOL. your first post is in bold below.

Shog, check your PM.

I've yet to spin anything - though I admit that I'm tempted at times reading some other crap that gets posted lately.

Not really confirmed either way yet. I also heard that HD being "standard" on Xenon may not be set in stone as is generally assumed either.
