PS4 Controller - Dualshock 4 Unveilved

I wonder if Options does something different, or if it's just Start relabeled to match how it's more commonly used these days (everyone presses X/A to start these days, how many actually press the Start button unless the game actively ignores every other button?) Though if that's the case, I wonder if it could bounce back to Start anyway. We saw how the original PS3 controller's design bounced from the boomerang to the traditional style, and while this seems WAY smarter designs I wouldn't be surprised if similar happened there. And if Share would work as Select for BC purposes.

... Similarly, I wonder if they'll raise the middle portion of the D-Pad above the plastic like on Vita. The gap seems smaller, but it'd make the D-Pad way better.

The controller is somehow both ugly and sexy, depending on the angle.
It looks comfy, the triggers and analogue sticks look improved, and that's all that matters to me really.

Thank god they have gone with matte instead of glossy, such a better material when it comes to holding it for longer periods of time in different conditions, I said it before in the other topic that the DS3 can get a bit nasty come hot weather.

I really hope that D-Pad is the same as the Vita just styled as a their typical look as well.

The Dualshock is the main reason I can't get into Sony consoles. I'm glad this one looks improved, no way the same design would had last another decade.

I'm still baffled by the desition of having the D-pad in the upfront.
Standard and is greatly preferred by millions of people. As much as you hate the layout, just know there's just as many people that disagree with you, I can't play any action/fighting/3rd person game on 360 because of the horrible layout.

hmm I'm worried about the dpad. Doesn't look like they're using the vita one like in the prototype. I wonder why they changed that? Could this one actually be more responsive even though it seems similar to ds3.

Maybe share won't work in "BC" games? Or maybe they'll just use the touch pad.
I suspect Share won't work in BC games, similarly to how taking pictures doesn't work in PSP/PS1 games on Vita as I recall. And if they really are just consolidating them it's not a huge surprise, Sega never saw the need for it, and Nintendo's gone back and forth on including it up to the point that the 3DS apparently forces native software to treat Select as an alternate Start. Which annoys me, but I guess it just seems somewhat redundant for most games, and if you REALLY need it pushing in the touch pad will do.

Someone who is good with Photshop, please, remove the gloss so the world can see how much better it'd look. Thanks.

I assume that the touchpad is smart enough to know if its left or right side is being pressed. There's your Select and Start buttons. Along with any other damn "button" the dev wants in the middle.

The light bar also changes patterns during gameplay to provide useful information to gamers, such as when a character is critically low on health or has taken major damage.

Yes, because I keep an eye on my controller when I'm playing games.

<Hires shots>

Oooh sexy. And judging by the much longer range of motion on the triggers compared to DS3, they ARE proper ones this time! WOOTWOOT

I wonder if they went with necks that short on the sticks to make it easier to access the touchpad.
I'm okay with the design. unsure why some people dislike the share button.

Yeah I dont get that either. It's a button in a spot you wont press it by accident. And the functionality it serves is great.

A lot of people like symmetrical and a lot of people like asymmetrical. Despite years of people yelling that asymmetrical is more ergonomic, or better for shooters, I've never been presented with any other reasoning for saying this than opinion. I like both types, and don't mind that they kept it the same.

I'm curious how they expect us to use the light for things like health alerts and stuff mentioned in the press release since it looks like you wouldn't really be able to to see the light when holding it normally. Also wondering if they are bundling the camera, if not the light seems like a strange cost to incur on all the controllers (im guessing it must be cheap then)

I presume there's a good reason the touchpad curves over the top. A rather unusual design that they'd have to have gone out of their way for.

so xbox will probably win best controller again then?

Still not convinced that the analog configuration (vs. the offset ones of the 360 controller) is the best, but this is the kind of thing you can't really judge until you get it in your hands. I dig the grippy texture on the bottom though.
