PS4 Controller - Dualshock 4 Unveilved

I don't care about how it looks, but I hope we can turn the color bar off. Overall I'm very disappointed with such timid design changes.

Timid? They remodeled the entire shell. Very significant changes that imo all seem at a glance to be for the better.

And the light will be pointing away from you, so as long as it doesn't reflect on the screen it doesn't matter.

Not sure if it's been posted before in this thread but: still no concave nubs for the sticks? Has Sony learned nothing?
Believe it or not learning doesn't mean making a 360 controller. The ringed circumference reminds me slightly of the Classic Controller. It seems improved while still distinctly being a DualShock.

I don't understand why concave is inherently better. Seems like a preference thing. When I actually look at how I keep my thumb on a 360 pad, it's not natural at all. It's hanging off the edge. I like convex with an edge, so this looks like the best design to me

Back of the controller looks great like a DS3 mated to a 360 controller.

Triggers look great.

Are the R1 and R2 buttons split into 2 buttons now?

There is no good reason to have concave nubs, but the lip round the edge is welcome. Unless your thumbs are unnaturally bony their surface should compress to a flat shape when they come into contact with something.

I love the new controller aesthetics, although I'm confused about the light, it's for depth sensing? and we need a stereoscopic camera bar for that? I don't really see that taking off tbh.

Good to see some kind of recession in the analogue sticks if not a full concave like the 360. From the times I used the DS3 it seemed like I had less grip on the sticks with the hemisphere surface, reassuring now I am considering getting on of these.

I hope the bottom triggers don't bend upwards/under the controller like they seemed to on the DS3 though, my fingers always seemed to slip off them because of that.

Yeah the iconic design is still there but with enough changes and additions to make it fresh. They did a great job.

Oh wow, well spotted. Looks like they accidentally released a different prototype picture with the R1 and R2 split into four buttons

Not impressed. PS3 Controllers better work with the new Playstation. Why would I want to pay another $60 bucks for a new controller just so I can have a stupid share button??

You're right. I didn't even notice that before.

And you mean R1 and L1.

Maybe R3 is not clickable anymore.

Wasn't that someone's photoshop to reduce his hand gymnastics? I'm not too sure.

Such a modest upgrade and I reduce my hand gymnastics by a significant amount :\

?? Where is that pic even from? All the other pics show them as normal buttons.

I hate the fucking analog placement. It's annoying as shit to me that it has persisted this long on Sony consoles. At least they decided that the contours should be comfortable in a human hand. Finally.

No...phoning it in would be this...

Sony finally thinking past 16 bit side scrollers and fighting games.

Not true. The ergonomics of that thing were actually pretty great.

The DS4 looks good though. It looks a bit bigger than the previous controllers, but not quite as big as a 360 controller, which will likely help those who complain about their sausage fingers.

Functionally it looks great, but the aesthetics are pretty ugly to my eye. All of those clashing surface textures make it look like a third party effort.

In my opinion, from a pushing-hardware-standpoint, Sony should have copied the Wii U gamepad. They were probably tempted anyways.

I mean, 18+ of years of virtually the same controller is tedious in my view.

how wouldyou fit a touchpad on a 360 controller ?

Even with the Gaikai tech, there's no way they would've had time to do all of that and have it work right. No, they did what they could in order to be feature complete.

Yeah tedium sucks. Microsoft should go with the dualshock design and sony should go with the 360 design to shake things up.

Hmm, is that a proprietary headset jack?[/QUOTE]I thought that was the quickcharge contact.

I'd like to see compelling proof of concept before I even bothered putting a touchpad on a controller. Disregarding that, could you not fit it in the same place by shifting the start/home/back buttons around? I think you could.

It looks better than the current build quality of the PS3 controller. When I replaced my controller a few years ago I thought I had received a fake and sent it back.

I'm liking it. Looks damn comfortable and finally a texture surface to the grips. No more smooth, shiny plastic. Increased size is also a bonus.

So I'm glad they are at least trying to move the controller forward. However, I said before that nobody is going to make use of these features (or Durango's) because they're too interested in generalizing hardware (in fact it was a theme of the conference). Whether that be 3rd parties porting games, remote play with other devices or just lack of innovation/moving outside the comfort zone nobody is going to be pushing these new controller mechanisms. Even Sony's first party had nothing for it and if they have nothing you know it's doomed to failure like Sixaxis, Move and the Vita trackpad.

Looks great.

But, I am NOT sold on the touchpad. They didn't show anything with it, so it hasn't sold me. If they show something meaningful, then ok.

I love it. Love the new grip texture, love the new sticks, love the touchpad, love the glow-y bar. I'm a bit iffy on the triggers, but they can't be any worse than the PS3's. The Share button is brilliant. I guess "Options" is a replacement for Start and Select? I'm fine with that.

Wish they could have at least placed the sticks further apart. I have to be conscious of my thumbs colliding when I use Dual Shocks. It's nice that they realized the problem with convex tips, but I'll have to pay extra for a third party pad or an adapter if I get a PS4, because I am not using this. Let's see what Hori has in store for us...

I like it. You can tell they have just said "fuck it" to the aesthetics and just went with something that will feel good and pack in as much functionality as possible. I like the slightly 360 controller shape, the fixed L2/R2 triggers (concave at last), the share button is nice when you consider what it does, and the waggle features also seem unobtrusive.

I am really worried about that to be honest. Plasma TV and in a darker room I can see reflections driving me nuts. I hope there is a way to turn it off.

Was hoping for more than a touch screen and light on the DS3. Wanted the left analog to be in the prime time location. Or at the very least a larger vita D-pad on it.
