8bitdo Ultimate 2 for Switch:

costs almost $30 less,
comes with a charging dock,
uses high end TMR* sticks,
uses hall effect analog triggers,
has hair trigger switches,
has 2 back paddles + 2 additional bumpers,
has an amazing tactile d-pad,
can save 3 custom profiles,
and has customisation software for fine tuning and creating profiles.

*TMR (Tunnel Magneto Resistance) sticks are basically a better version of Hall Effect Sticks. higher precision due to being way more sensitive to changes in the magnetic field, more resistant to environmental factors influencing the magnetic field, and use less power than Hall Effect sticks.
Got the ultimate 2 and yeah they are really solid. Get them while you can as their website already has tariff warnings.

Is it wireless?

Would it work for switch 2?

Does the d-pad pivot on something like normal d-pad or can you press all 4 directions at the same time like the dumbass design decision for the Switch 1 Pro Controller?

Sounds good.

I've already ordered one, but the greatest thing about these are the battery life imo. 40h per charge is pretty fantastic.

It's going to be nice to get a headphone jack as well so that I can play on the TV and blast the volume without waking up the kids.

Not really sure what to do with the back-buttons, but I guess I'll re-map all the games that force you to press down on the analog sticks/use the analog sticks as buttons. I've never liked that.

If people weren't interested there wouldn't be 15 Rally games and all kinds of other racing games where they work around the lack of triggers. It's still shit and there's lots of interest.
Because it's easy money. Like porting all the PS4 games will be easy money with close to zero development costs, ROI is almost at 100% (not including Nintendos share though). Doesn't mean there's lots of demand for tons of racing games though, Nintendos platform is just great at releasing shovelware. In fact their eshop is stuffed with cheap copies of cheap copies, so much, that you can't even browse it in bearable speed on the switch.

But again, hardcore racing games fans won't be satisfied with a Nintendo Switch anyway.

I get that the decision of not including analogue triggers sucks for many other reasons, but racing games is just not a good reason as to why they should go with analogue triggers instead.

I'm enjoying this YouTube channel coverage of the Switch 2.
One little detail I've noticed about the hardware is it seems to have little sparkles mixed into the plastic of everything, you can notice it when they move it under the direct lighting.

I caved and ordered one yesterday. Worst case, even if it doesn't work on the Switch 2, I still have my old Controller Pro.

Just be careful if you're looking for something that can turn on your Switch 2 when docked from sleep mode.
I might be wrong but I think Nintendo only offers this to their official controllers and I think even the original pro controller doesn't even have it.

Nah, a lot of third party controllers can wake Switch these days. My go-to controller reviewer, VK's Channel, always tests this, as well as Switch motion controls.

My personal favorite controller, the Flydigi Vader 4, can wake Switch no problem.

Sounds good, but too expensive. I'll stick to my old NS1 pro controller since it's fully compatible last time I checked.

That's worth keeping in mind for people who plan on keeping their Switch (1) Pro controllers as well;

You cannot exit sleep mode on Nintendo Switch 2 using the HOME Button on Nintendo Switch (1) controllers such as Joy-Con and Nintendo Switch (1) Pro Controller.

Not sure if this'll also be the case for 3rd party controllers made for Switch (1).

It's 2025 and all consoles have analogue triggers. It's not 2000.
Back then GameCube had super springy analog triggers with the extra click at the bottom. Those were great. I think it is super shitty to charge what 20 more than Sony for a controller that has 30 bucks less functionality. Ok that is an exaggeration but FFS this company is so fucking cheap they cut things that cost pennies because it adds up and charge way too much for their accessories. I was going to go all in and get the Pro Controller but now I am going to go with the old one for a while and then maybe get an 8bitdo one when they add some colors.

Agreed. I only bought it because of the 3.5mm connector. Something that should have been in the original "Pro" controller.

Pro Controller 2 is the most overrated and expensive controller I have ever seen. It's a total joke.

Im going to go with the 8bitDo controller. I can't bring myself to buy this "Pro" controller at the insane price Nintendo is selling it. No analog triggers, no Hall Effects sticks, stupid price.

As a person with bigger hands, the Pro controller was an easy sell last gen.

This time around the joycons themselves are larger and so are the buttons. I'll hold off until seeing how they feel this time around. The Joycon 2's in the grip might do the job just fine.

Plus, the old pro is still compatible, though the d-pad I read is improved this time around. Not being able to power the Switch 2 with it is a mild inconvenience too. But $95 isn't just an impulse buy for me.

I have 2 switch pro controllers one I got used for $20. They are great. I would like the new one too, but I will wait a bit. Back buttons are great. I can ask for one for Christmas.

8bitdo, Gamesir or a few of other similar controllers would be a much better bet vs this "Pro" controller and for less.

Nintendo adding back paddles is such a treat. Looks like their best controller yet.
Yea but as usual they're still behind. Vamve has 4 buttons on the back, MS and Sony pro controllers also do. Nintendo only adds 2. Maybe with the Switch 3 they'll add a 3rd and with the switch 4 a 4th.

These buttons are critical for non console shooters (overwatch, marvel rivals etc) where you need to aim and shoot while also using abilities. Often the gun in these games has 2 fire modes 1 for the right trigger and another for the left trigger. Then there's the ability to jump which is important for head shot dodging, and then there's 3-5 more abilities the characters can have so 2 of these abilities get mapped on R1 and L1 and the rest go on the face buttons. Problem is you can't aim and use the face buttons at the same time on console due to lack of back buttons. On PC you can do a million things simultaneously while you move, aim and shoot but on console all you have is 4 comfortable usable buttons (R1, l1, r2, L2).

Paddles solves this perfectly. Valve figured this out with the Steam controller years ago and refined it with the Steam deck 4 years ago. But console makers still refuse to adapt and when they do have 4 paddles they charge $150+ for it, it's ridiculous.

The Edge only has 2 back buttons unfortunately.

However considering the trackpad can be mapped to 5 separate inputs (1 clickable section and 4 touch regions, or the opposite) and the 2 function buttons under the sticks can also be remapped, as can the mute button, it probably has the most possible inputs of any controller on the market. 27 by my count, not including analog stick movements, accelerometer/gyro, or adaptive triggers. Even my Vader 4 with 4 back buttons and 2 extra face buttons only has 23.

Yeah, I will likely Day 1 this. And a GameCube controller, too.
Same here. I still have my official launch pro controller and it's still going strong. If the new one does the same it's pretty awesome value when you break the cost down over eight years or so.

Nah analog triggers suck .. you don't need them for racing games . We didn't need them for GT 1 - 4 . Those who wanted it used the right stick or bought a wheel / pedal set.

For all the other 99% of games analog triggers are a hinderance.

Down with the triggearchy!!
I'm about to acquire 100% on gran turismo 3 and they are essential to racing games because you need to be able apply throttle slightly while cornering. PS2 did this with the pressure sensitive face buttons. But this doesn't have that or analog triggers. Poor.
