Sony Interactive Entertainment's PlayStation 4 is still a sales juggernaut. The company has sold more than 91.6 million PS4s since launching the system in November 2013.

SIE also revealed that it sold through more than 5.6 million PS4s during the 2018 holidays alone. That data only includes sales from November 19 through December 31.


Those hardware sales are due in large part to PS4's strong software library. The publisher revealed that customers purchased more than 50.7 million PS4 games between November 19 and December 31. Marvel's Spider-Man, a Sony first-party game, was near the top of that pack with more than 9 million copies sold through as of November 25.

"Thanks to the continued support from our fans during the holiday season, we are pleased to announce that PS4 has reached 91.6 million units globally," SIE boss John Kodera said in a statement. "We are also happy to announce that the monthly active users of PlayStation Network continues to show strong growth, and has surpassed 90 million as of end of November 2018. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our passionate community around the globe, and our partners, for helping us achieve these milestones."

Sony is also looking ahead. For 2019, the SIE chief executive did not get into specifics, but he did promise that the company has more to come for the PS4.

"This year, we will bring more enhanced experiences to our fans along with a highly anticipated lineup of games that are only possible on PS4," said Kodera. "As we look toward the next PS4 milestone, SIE will continue to evolve, and we will further expand the platform to deliver the best interactive entertainment experiences to the world."

I'm really happy Imnsoniac pulled those numbers. It most likely means we are about to enter a new age of Marvel licensed games being released, just like Iron Man opened the doors for the MCU.
 
Gotta say, they led this generation flawlessly. Maybe first 5 months of release there was a bit of a gaming drought but after that the games just kept coming. Well done 🤘.

These numbers are insane and the craziest part is that it feels like the PS4 is just getting started with games like Tsushima and TLOU2 coming out. I feel it could be on the market for another 2-3 years easily before PS5 comes out.

9 million copies of Spider-Man? God damn. Massive success for Insomniac. I imagine they'll be beefing up their team after this.

yeah no PS5 is coming out next year. we need less games to run at a low fps.


to me. looking like. ~125-130 million lt sales for ps4.

were these numbers calculated before or after the announcement of the pervo anime games being "censored?" Because from the outrage on the thread here that had to amount to easily 10 - 15 million in lost sales.
 
Well yea, they gave away those spiderman bundles with a PS4 practically for free, 199 bucks.

More to do with that then anything else.
 
So it surpassed the ps3. Congrats to Sony on sales and Holy shit at psn numbers. Congrats to insomniac on spidey. Pretty much guaranteed spidey 2

ok you covered the numbers sold (at 200$) during the holiday season. What about the other 85 million?
 
I wouldn't be surprised if it would end up breaking records.
Playstation has been the number one brand kids have been talking about for quite a while now.
Pretty much every family with kids I know, the kids have their own PS4. Haven't seen the Xbox or the Switch in any of those households.
Fortnite and surprisingly Farming Simulator have been the games I've seen them all been super much into.
 
Gotta hand it to them, they've recovered from the PS3 mistakes very nicely. Assuming they don't do anything crazy with price, I'll be there day one for the PS5 because Sony very obviously knows the video game market and how to make a successful console.

It seems after every outrage Sony does even better.....Maybe these outrages were staged by Sony themselves....Hmmm! o_O
 
90 mil is a huge success. I remember prior to launch when consoles dying was quite the buzz at the time, I remember some users on this board thinking they wouldn't get 55-60.

After PS2's success Sony became cocky and they thought they could sell console with high price with barely any game when it first launched. Lets hope for PS5 Sony again doesn't get cocky because of PS4's success.

The policy affects Japanese developers more than the consumers as they have to hold inspections with Playstation HQ in English-only and only during US hours. It may come to the point where they just don't want to deal with the shenanigans. That would eventually affect the consumers as they will go for the platforms that do have the titles they are interested in.

Nintendo pretty much has the advantage over Sony when it comes to 3rd party developers and why the Switch version of certain games get preferential treatment. I recall NIS making less-than-glowing comments for Sony while they were pretty happy about their relationship with Nintendo.
