Thank you. I will have to do that when PSN is back up. I was looking at the little padlock symbol on Resogun and thinking to myself "WHY ARE YOU THERE!?".
Would you rather not play and wait for the update to download and install or at least play right away and apply the update when it's convenient for you?

how do you check the progress of a disc based install? (i'm talking the full install not just to playable state)
I don't think there's a way to tell since it's all done behind the scenes.
I don't understand how you did not expect this to happen. Especially since it happened in the US 2 weeks ago and that isn't even Sony's strongest region. If you can't deal with a little PSN outage on launch day then just play your Xbone games in the meantime.

I'd rather it checks as soon as a game starts installing, downloads the patch and then installs when I first launch the game.
The games I've played so far all ping up a 'downloading update' as soon as I start up, and they've finished downloading and it is 'ready to install' before the game has finished loading. So I'm literally waiting for the game to get to the main menu, then quitting and relaunching it.
I couldn't work it out. I ended up just waiting for the disc noise to stop.

BF4 and AC4 both show a % for the part of the game they're installing in-game menu. I'm not sure about the rest

thats a little annoying tbh, the xbox one shows a percentage on how far it is so i know exactly when i can remove a disc and put a different one in
I didn't even know this was a thing until i was halfway through the first BF4 mission and it popped up saying it's now installed.
Now I'm confused, are you saying your console is DOA or are you complaining you can't download your digital games? Should have gone physical if you absolutely needed to play at launch. Did you really expect PSN to be running perfectly on a record-breaking launch day? It sucks that you can't play your games but I personally expected EU PSN to have problems at launch as did a lot of other people I'm sure.
He's right actually. Unless you have a bad console, it's not the console. The servers are getting hammered. It happened in the US but was much better the next day. If you can't be a little patient, go play your Xbone. You can't be bored of it already can you?
The console works fine, the servers are getting hammered. I don't find that strange though, almost all PS4 users of Europe are trying to log in at once.
that's what I'm talking about. It was just INSANE. Got even fuller later on I'd wager.

I don't see what's wrong with the attitude though, it is something to be expected, online servers crumble when people rush to it on day one.

why is my BF4 37 gigs big. it's a disc game, Should it not be a little bit less then 37 gigs
Full installs for all games man. Limits the advantages of going physical to reselling and playing your games faster.
Yup, I tried getting on earlier and the same things happened to me. I was able to hit the PS button to get out, though. I tried to go back in and it told me it was under maintenance.
It works.. yeah. I can look around the menus, I can't download and play any of the games I pre-ordered though. A competing console did it just fine, I don't care how many people bought either of them, Sony should be ready to provide basic functionality.
I'm not surprised, but I shouldn't have to expect something I buy to not properly work when I buy it.

Im not too knowledgeable on how these games are compressed to fit on the disc but is it reasonable to assume that as the gen goes on the average install for each game will be significantly lower? Or will they pretty much always be in the 30+ range for the generation?
One thing I found interesting was that Madden 25 for Ps4 has an install of only 16 MB and not even a gigabyte. Considering sports games have to include commentary, all the teams, players, logos, etc I wonder why it is so low. For comparison NBA 2k14 is almost 40 GB.

This does not provide me with confidence for the future of PSN on the PS4 (at least not initially). One of the things that pleased me about Sony finally charging for online multiplayer was the fact that they would take those funds to reinvest in their network infrastructure to make it more or as robust as Xbox Live. So far PSN has already been down multiple times, even with the staggered launch of in US and European territories. Why were they not prepared for Europe after seeing what happened in the US?

Urgh what a damn mess. You would think they would keep the territories on different servers or something. They must do it with Vita because I can use the store on that, although it's a bit sluggish right now and it wouldn't take my 1 year PS+ card. Hopefully it didn't "use" the code in the process.

Did you get Resogun for free from PS+? If so, then you should expect to have to connect to the internet in order to validate your PS+ subscription.

IMPORTANT SUGGESTION FOR DIGITAL ONLY EUROPEANS:
Do not put all the downloads you have available on the queue at once, it will download everything simultaneously and you can't pause them. DL one at a time.

Do MS and Sony have the exact same type and number of servers?
If there are more PS4's out there then surely Sony has more cash to beef up it's network resources?
They know how many units they have to sell in each region and what the network load will be as people try to sign up/download or whatever.

I have stupid license verified notifications come up all the damn time while I'm in the app it's verifying. Even if I've been it in for a while. Netflix, Crackle, a downloaded game. Very annoying. Guess I'm gonna have to turn all notifications off to make it go away.

Sony expected the Ps4 to be popular based on the reception it was getting leading up to the launch but I dont think they were prepared for this type of success.

Can't speak for others, but in my experience with the console (6+ years) I've only had issues with the network during a period when they released new dashboard updates. Not to turn this into a console war thread, but from what I've been hearing there have been no such issues with Xbox Live during the X1 launch.

The Xbox One has been perfect online stability wise for me since I got it on launch.
How can they not be prepared? It was pretty much guaranteed to sell out the initial shipments and they know exactly how many are out there. They had time to prepare the infrastructure for this load

I believe the first time it's launched it verifies the license terms (PS+ etc)
