PS4 Launch Thread [Thread being archived 1/1/14]

Yesterday the disc drive of my ps4 would not accept a disc, it was constantly ejecting it seemed. Had to do a hard reset before it worked again.

If this happens again I'm going to call Sony for a replacement.

How do I know when it's done copying to the hard drive? Doesn't it install the whole game? The progress bar on the XMB was done in like 2 mins.

The progress bar in the menu only shows how much it has left to install until the game can be launched. Then the rest of the game will continue installing in the background, and there's no way to tell how far it has to go unless there's an in-game progress bar showing it (some games have this, most don't). Of course, you'll notice that it's done when the disc stops spinning (the disc drive is much louder than the fan in my experience).

Progress bar is only how much needs to be there for you to play. There is no way of knowing how much it has actually transferred over as far as I know, the system tells you it's occupied the full amount just a few minutes after it starts, and that's physically impossible.

Only way is to hear if the disk is spinning up. If it is then it's not finished.

That's just how the file system used works, it allocates the full amount necessary before the install/download even starts. It will even move other stuff around first so there's a continuous area of free space for the new data (this is why PS3 downloads - and I expect the same will happen on the PS4 - sometimes take so damn long to even get going). That way you never get any Windows-like file fragmentation, except maybe if the HDD is simply so full that it cannot be avoided.

The share menu crashing consistently is starting to piss me off now.

I've had it not record properly, but never crash. Any specific game it's doing this in?

Well shit, that's weird that they hide the fact that it's still installing. I turned the PS4 off after about 10 minutes because I thought it was going to explode. Will the install pick up where it left off?

Yes. It will also just install while it's sitting at the menu IIRC.

I suppose it's not shown simply because it's irrelevant for the actual playing of the game. You can play as soon as that first progress bar vanishes.

Been playing a bunch of Resogun and AC4 (digital version) and my PS4 is super quiet. Played about 10 minutes of Killzone off the disc yesterday and it sounds like a jet engine. Is that normal?

I have the same problem.
Only different thing is that i have AC4 on disc and thats is super quiet.
If i play Killzone MP then it is also silent.

I don't think it is a problem with the PS4.

Oh ok cool. If I look at my storage management, it says 39GB for Killzone but the disc is still spinning like crazy. Guess I'll just leave it be and hopefully it works itself out. Just don't want to have to deal with returning it to a place tha. Probably doesn't have any more PS4s to replace it with.

They hide it because the entire point is that it should be transparent to the user once it has installed enough to launch the game. While being able to see how far along it really is would be interesting for us "power users" I can definitely see why they would do it like this. Why keep showing a progress bar if the game is ready to be played?

Like I said, the full amount of space necessary is allocated before the install or download even starts, so yeah, it will show the game taking up that much even though it's still installing.

Yeah it's the same for me. Killzone was loud off the disk, and AC4 was pretty quiet. Honestly it just seems to depend on the game. I don't think it's an issue with the console. NBA 2k14 has something similar as well, in the career if you leave the screen on the little break(driving your car or when you're on a plane inbetween matches) the fans turn up. Even that seems like 2k Sports just forgot to cap the FPS in those scenes though so it's just rendering an excess of frames requiring the fan to turn up to keep it cool.

The fundamental issue is, like the slim, it's compact making it generally hotter anyway, and to top it off they've used a loud fan.

Apparently the bestbuys near by are going to have a few ps4 instock. There was a small crowd infront of one closest to where I live.

This is true. AC4 is a very quiet disc. Ditto my various Blu-rays (Monsters University, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, etc). Can't say the same about Call of Duty: Ghost, however. I hope in the future the publishers are doing some checking with Ubisoft to ask what they did right with AC4.

Hmmm. Not sure if its always been like this but how come my controller lights up orange (when i charge my DS4) when i pick up the controller? And when I place it flat on the floor, it just dies? :|

Has anyone else got surface scratches on the glossy black part?

I gave mine a quick wipe with a cloth and now it looks like someone's lotto ticket.

Quick question I'm curious since I don't have two controllers. When the 2nd player clicks the home button on their dualshock. Does it bring them to their own version of the UI showing their friendlist and things of that nature or does it show the first players?

Only use microfiber to wipe electronics. Everything else is abrasive and will scratch.

It was microfiber.

Well, at least it claimed it was when i purchased it for my tv

I'm guessing it was just a shit cloth, didn't get around to using it on my tv to find out.

So besides Resogun and Contrast, if I were to get one game, what do you suggest? No AC4 because I am getting it for Xmas, and I have NFS for the XB1.

Did this actually go on sale in North America?

I'd love to find one, it looks even slicker than the other decent one that came out:

No, you'd have to import it from the UK.

Ok it's probably just me but is there anyone else out there who hasn't taken the clear plastic strips off their controller because they wanted it to remain scratch free?

After realizing I am lazy, I suddenly get the reason to DL games digitally.

I mean I have to get up and switch out assassins creed black flag disc for the kz disc just to play mp? Not liking it.

I hear ya'. I hate switching discs.

The only games I buy discs of are the that I don't think will hate much replay value. Example: I will not buy Knack digitally. Why? because I'm going to play through it once and never play it again -- so I'm going to want to sell it.

Battlefield 4? I bought that digitally because I knew I'd be playing it for quite awhile.

Anyone else's system crash whenever they try to view screenshots? I haven't been able to for like as week. How do you fix this?

Got mine at the Walmart on n monroe street at tallahassee. went there at 6 am and was second in line. They only had 4, and over 30 people showed up. I'm so happy, next gen, here I come!

So after this v1.52 update, the battery life on my DS4 seems to have improved. On Saturday I started playing AC4 around 10:30am, and had a break for lunch around 1pm. Battery are still on full charge at that stage. On v1.51 the previous week, it was nearly at half charge with almost the same duration.

Is anyone else experiencing this, or am I just imagining things?

You know how, with the current UI, when you press the home button from a game to get back to the system UI, it just shows the icon for the game? Like this:

il6LlNDDotfh9.jpg

I was thinking it would be better/cool if, when you hit the home button, it shows the live feed for the game where the icon used to be, so you kind of know where you are in the game (like a pre-game lobby in a multiplayer game) without having to get back into it. The PS4 reserved a lot of RAM for the OS, so it shouldn't be an issue I would think. Here's a horrible mockup I made. Imagine that the game is still running in the little window:

What do you guys think?

I have a question:
Do i need to put PS4 in Stand-by mode for the auto-update function to work?
Because with PS3 when you turn it on in the morning a window pop-up and show you what did get updated/patched also it always sync the trophies, does PS4 have similar window?

Great idea! And while we're at it, can we PLEASE use our own image for that empty box on the left hand side? I don't want Facebook-compressed image. BUT is it possible to have an image there and still have the PSN icon next to the name? Because I don't want the icon next to my name to be square-looking.

Killzone is trying its damnest to make me dislike the game. I'm perpetually stuck on chapter 7 'The Handler' when you're out in space protecting
Masser's container
. Near the end, the forcefield doesn't go down, the container just slides through the door and the airlock refuses to open...

Restarting the mission from the beginning doesn't resolve it.
Trying really hard to like this game, but the general lack of polish the campaign suffers and now this.. potentially leaving me with no other option than to delete my save and start over..sheesh. I guess the game's not for me. :(

Looks fantastic though.

Here's a video I took of the entire section for reference so you can share my suffering (bug is towards the end of the 3 minute clip).

It's terribly handled and ambiguous, really frustrating if you want to benchmark disks but can't tell for certain if it's copied to the drive.

I'm up to this same section, I've not made it to the force field at the end yet, the stupid containers and little space drones are kinda difficult as it is.
The game looks fucking bananas, I can't BELIEVE this is a launch game, there's a few bits which are only "kinda pretty good" but some of them are mind boggling, Guerilla are always consistent with the graphics.

I'm playing on hard btw, wanted to get the most out of it the first time, I'm enjoying it a fair bit but I will say that I'd like to see the owl and enemy ai slightly re-balanced. Sometimes he's too powerful. Overall though this is pretty fucking slick when you consider it's a launch day game, seriously..........

Anyone else have loose plastic handles on their DS4?

The plastic on the handles seem to be loose and wobbly, I contacted Sony Support and they told me to send my controller in and they'll take a look at it.

The thing is that i'll be without a controller for 10 days...

The cs rep told me if I didn't want to be without a controller for 10 days that I should just buy a new controller.

wtf

The left handle on my bundled DS4 is a bit loose. Noticed it last night. My second controller is solid, though. Not sure if it bothers me enough to send it back just yet.

That's a sucky customer service response although I'm surprised they even take in controllers

Others with similar problems have said that you can solve it most of the time by tightening the 4 screws on the back of the controller (just 4 Phillips screws)

I'd say try that before you try anything else

I tried this, but the screws are tiny! Gonna have to get hold of a tiny screwdriver.

Recently my PS4 fan has been running louder than normal (it's went from whisper quiet to audible over game sound). I tried cleaning it for dust, hoovered the vents and cleaned the area around it with no luck.

I was wondering maybe because I leave it on Standby all the time and never switch it off completely? The fans still run when it's in Standby for me so maybe it's just had enough after 2 and a half weeks...

It's hard it being so loud after I know how quiet it can be, anything I can do about it?

Got the same problem, the right handle is perfect though. Gotta try tightening the screws later..

Killzone probably squeezes more juice off PS4 than both those. Just wait for the next ND game. TLOU killed many old PS3 fats because it stresses the hardware to the highest.

I had my console put vertically because of lack of space but without a stand (it's not available to buy anywhere I looked). After it started to sound like a jet engine in KZ, I put it horizontally and it helped a lot. I'll probably need that stand anyway. I had to move my PS3 to another room but will probably bring it back to fight my backlog.
