PS4 Launch Thread [Thread being archived 1/1/14]

Recently my PS4 fan has been running louder than normal (it's went from whisper quiet to audible over game sound). I tried cleaning it for dust, hoovered the vents and cleaned the area around it with no luck.

I was wondering maybe because I leave it on Standby all the time and never switch it off completely? The fans still run when it's in Standby for me so maybe it's just had enough after 2 and a half weeks...

It's hard it being so loud after I know how quiet it can be, anything I can do about it?

I have moved mine to a slightly more open area in my TV cabinet, the PS4 is upright (DVD at the bottom) - the heat / fan is on the right side of the PS4, so DVD at the bottom = heat rising out. I've also added a very small, very quiet USB duct fan to my TV cabinet. I'd say my PS4 noise levels are now acceptable, before they were between level 2 and level 3 of a PS3 slim (that ain't good)

Mine is exactly the same. I saw a comment somewhere saying that they changed the fan settings in firmware 1.52 so the 'kick in' sooner but can't find confirmation anywhere and it was at the time of the update that I noticed that my PS4 got louder.

All works fine, it's just noticeably louder :s

I'm reluctant to put my PS4 inside a TV cabinet, even one with an open back. Not long after I got mine, I decided to get a feel of its heat level and was surprised by the amount of hot air getting out of the back of my PS4. And I actually put my PS4 on top of a stand in an open area of my room, so nothing actually interferes with its heat distribution. If the machine produces that much hot air in an open area, I can't imagine how hot it'd be in a more confined area, even with the back area opened.

I'm actually interested in putting mine vertical but I've seen people saying that the right hand side (the matte area) is also a place for air circulation. I can't detect any hot air coming out of there but I am guessing air actually gets absorbed from there? In that case, wouldn't making it standing vertically obscured the air flow? Even with the official stand, I'm not sure how much air it can actually get.

I have a question:
Do i need to put PS4 in Stand-by mode for the auto-update function to work?
Because with PS3 when you turn it on in the morning a window pop-up and show you what did get updated/patched also it always sync the trophies, does PS4 have similar window?

I need an answer please

My PS4 has an entire shelf to itself in a TV Stand, horizontal, completely open, with wire management. I'll try sitting it upright like yours if the noise continues but man, I hope I don't have to resort to that.

They need to change it back, mine was perfect before. Literally had no issues with the console at all. I'm trying to play Flower and all I can hear is bwwwzzzzzzzzzz, it's jarring.

Hoping it just fixes itself if I can't do anything to help it.

You know how, with the current UI, when you press the home button from a game to get back to the system UI, it just shows the icon for the game? Like this:

il6LlNDDotfh9.jpg

I was thinking it would be better/cool if, when you hit the home button, it shows the live feed for the game where the icon used to be, so you kind of know where you are in the game (like a pre-game lobby in a multiplayer game) without having to get back into it. The PS4 reserved a lot of RAM for the OS, so it shouldn't be an issue I would think. Here's a horrible mockup I made. Imagine that the game is still running in the little window:

i2dt5y4qUh0bD.png

What do you guys think?

I don't think the PS4 is capable of displaying two entirely different things (the menu and the game) running live at once like that. MS designed their console for that (with quite a lot of system resources dedicated to the OS), Sony didn't. But what they could probably at least do is put a screenshot of the game there, taken at the time you switched away from it. So it would look like your mockup, but it wouldn't be a live miniature.

It's terribly handled and ambiguous, really frustrating if you want to benchmark disks but can't tell for certain if it's copied to the drive.

It's handled in a way that's supposed to be as transparent and seamless as possible for most people. Yeah, that means us "power users" get left out of some information we might want, but I absolutely understand why Sony did it like this. Showing a progress bar for the full install, rather than just the initial one needed for the game to be launchable, would confuse more people than it would help.

And anyway, can't you just listen to the disc spinning? It will stop once the install is done.

When you're streaming your gameplay with comments enabled, this is exactly what it's doing. The game view is scaled down a bit and a system-controlled app (comments, counter, camera picture) is included. So they probably reserve some part of APU resources for the system anyway but it must be a lot less than in case of X1. I don't think that displaying a window with overlay content is much of a problem for modern GPUs. TV cards for PC worked that way 15 years ago http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_overlay

Man, I just noticed that it's Dec 16 today. Having bought in on Nov 15, I don't think Sony will sell me a warranty at this point, right?

I have an August built PS4, so I should have done it earlier. Damn. I had to rip open my ancient PS3 and reapply the thermal paste, really don't want to do that again.

That's not necessarily as demanding as running the full menu UI simultaneously, though. I just don't think the PS4 could do this.

So, I just noticed something weird. I downloaded the NBA 2k14 demo from the web store and checked my PS4 download queue. Apparently it's also downloading Trine 2, which according to my transaction history I purchased on the 1st of December for 0€..
In the web store the game does not show up as purchased.
Is this a case of hte PS4 pre-downloading stuff that I might be interested in? If so then why does it say I purchased it over two weeks ago. I've played a lot since then and it never showed up on my download list. Despite the date it still shows up AFTER my other downloads, which I started only a few days ago.

Can anyone explaint to me what happened?

Is there some kind of weird-ass requirement that your controller has to be put into controller 1 slot in order for PS+ to acknowledge you? Especially for CoD: Ghost?

I just had a weird experience where I was going to play CoD: Ghost MP but it won't allow me because "You need PS+ to play MP". But I do have PS+ and I have activated my PS4 as my primary account.

I kept trying and trying but it didn't work for me....until I read on gamefaqs about how someone had problem with the controller on the 2nd slot. So I swapped the controller from the 2nd one to the 1st one and now it's working. But isn't that weird? Why restrict players based on controllers?

Whoever is controller 1 is the "lead" player and as such would need the credentials required to play online. Might just be that game though, not tried going online as a pair.

see I'm the total apposite, Love SP but I just find the MP to be boring and dead
ACBlackflag is my most played game followed by KZ and NFSR, and TRDE is my next purchase.

What I find really disappointing is all the second screen and companion app are none existence, unless you have a tablet
AC4's on selected tablets, and NFS is iPad only at the mo
no Smartphone or Vita second screen stuff is available, the Vita not being available is annoying as it should be there day one

Are bundles easier to get hold of in the UK now? I noticed the "Mega Pack" is in stock at amazon (sold by amazon) - it's the killzone/pad/camera pack + Fifa for £470. Is this pretty much the only way to snag a unit before xmas do you think? Buying with games you potentially have no interest in? Also Gamer Pack which is same without Fifa.

EDIT: Mega Pack now gone, Gamer Pack still available.

EDIT 2: 15 minutes later and they're both gone. I guess I was wrong, it's not even easy to grab a bundle. Congrats to anyone who got one while they were there.

I just don't understand how making one controller the lead is relevant to me being a member of PS+. If I already told the console that this PS4 is my primary console and that I am a PS+ member then why would it matter that I use the controller in slot 1 or slot 2? It seems a bit too restrictive for no apparent reason.

It's also dangerous because one of the slots may stop working and you maybe forced to use the other one but if this issue continues, then we'll have problem in the future. But in general, it just seems weird and doesn't make sense. Is it likely that it's a bug?

So I got a free PS4, I believe. Basically, I had a preorder for the 29th November, but Amazon or DPD lost my package. I got a refund on that and later on, courtesy of my friend, notified that Amazon had more stock of the Gamer Bundle so I jumped on it and ordered it quickly. Now it is currently at my mums...

...now I got a PS4 right here that was delivered to myself at the accommodation today. The PS4 is still at home.

So... I got a free PS4.

You should probably contact Amazon. Don know if I would be able to keep it without it eating at my conscience.

lol.

Selling it to my friend for £300. I know I could get more, but I sell it at a loss to a friend that wanted one plus he did help me out with buying the gamer pack bundle when Amazon restocked it for a time.

It's not a loss if you got it for free. Not judging, I'd do the same.

I think there is a section in the ps store that u can purchase it from sony still.

The left handle on my bundled DS4 is a bit loose. Noticed it last night. My second controller is solid, though. Not sure if it bothers me enough to send it back just yet.

I've actually noticed this on my controller too.

When I hold it I can feel the plastic on the left side being pushed together like it wasn't screwed together tight enough.

I'll have to see if I can tighten it up.

From a system perspective, it would be hard to pull off. MS has as an OS requirement for games to run at a much lower graphical setting when windowed, so that it doesn't eat up as much system resources. So when you zoom out of a game on XB1 to the dash, lots of graphical effects in the game (like AA) get turned off, but you'd never notice it because of the window's scale.

For PS4, having an OS requirement like that is pretty much too late, and to minimize it would be quite a task since it would also eat up system resources. You could put it as a screenshot like the Vita, except that the game is still running in the background, which would give you an out-of-date picture in just a few seconds.

How much system resources it would eat up, and if the PS4 could support it, I'm not really sure. I think a small window somewhere on the screen like YouTube's apps on mobile would be great when waiting for games to load. But I dunno how feasible that is.

I have no problems with sharing images on FB, but for some reason the trophies I've earned aren't published there anymore like on the PS3, eventhough I've enabled it. Has anyone else had the same problem? I wonder if it has something to do with having "publish game events" disabled?

Score! Total opportunity buy. I went to Target this morning to look at digital cameras for my folks when I saw that they had 2 PS4s left from a morning shipment. Me and some other guy grabbed the last ones

Now to figure out how to put in my entertainment center while still keeping my PS3 (still have a backlog :/ )

Lmao at the cat!

In other news, I just went to GS to take advantage of the trade in 40 dollar special, I traded in KZSF, GTA V, Knack, ACIV, and NSFR and got 192.60. I fully paid off Infamous Second son and got 131 bucks worth of gift cards plus I donated a dollar to some childrens hospital.

All in all not bad.

Has anyone else got surface scratches on the glossy black part?

I gave mine a quick wipe with a cloth and now it looks like someone's lotto ticket.

Mine has, I wiped mine with a Canon lense cloth because it's a dust magnet and now it's covered in hundreds of scratches.

This is why I hate glossy plastic.

I think a simple screen shot would do the job, no need to have the game in motion. the console already takes automatic screens whenever we press the Share button.

Well, I have my PS4 at last, more than 2 weeks after my launch PS4 "vanished". Unfortunately it wasn't delivered until 18:30 and tonight is night work. Doubt I'll actually do anything until tomorrow afternoon when I've had some sleep. Unbelievable!

No matter what I do I have the same issue, I just gave up and decided they'd disabled it early on to ease the load or whatever. However, a friend in Germany had a few of his display a couple of weeks ago - asked him what he did to make it work and he didn't know, said it was random.

Would I be able to buy the digital code for AC4 from Amazon (currently on sale) and upgrade it to the PS4 version? I don't have a PS3 anymore.

I bought BF4 for the PS3 the other day (when it was in the EU sale) using the SEN webstore, then after that bought the PS4 upgrade off there too.

Don't think it matters if you have a PS3, it'll just see that you own the PS3 version and the upgrade should become available.

aww man! my PS4 didn't come in today.
but tomorrow is PS4 Night! (aka. updating and downloading ps+ stuff)

don't worry updates are small and fast, PS+ games are small, Resogun is under 1GB, contrast isn't much higher and PSN downloads are much faster on PS4 than PS3, not to mention you can Play whist downloading/installing other stuff. You'll get plenty of game time.

cool! I was watching the order status like a hawk today at work. but no dice since 10 am. but tomorrow I will be part of the earlier bird clan.

still thinking about what retail game to get.

I think I'm torn between AC4 and need for speed.
