PS4 System Software Preview – USB Music Player, New Home Screen Colors, More

looks like the last update (1.70) took two weeks to launch from the preview date.

You're right, nthose are big ticket items we've been waiting a long time for (suspend/resume since launch..), but I think it is fair to give credit for them adding useful features like background music playback.

Background music playback that is half assed.

I don't want to plug in physical media to my PS4 to listen to music, I want to be able to stream music from my laptop through DLNA.

It's fucking 2014.

True, but it actually makes sense this time.

PSN goes down

No scheduled maintenance

No update on whats going on just investigations

Instead, update on new and improved PSN 2.0

¯_(ツ)_/¯

Different people work in different departments I guess.

Do those USB hubs work for the ps4? The ones that plug into the pre existing USB ports and expand the amount to 4-5?

I'll admit my post was mostly a knee-jerk reaction, but still, the slow progress in adding the most-requested features which still are missing (e.g. suspend/resume, DLNA) is seriously bumming me out. This is definitely a step in the right direction, but at the same time, I cannot applaud them for adding the more basic stuff that has been part of the PS3 OS for ages.

I can. For two simple reasons. 1. Sony isn't a software company. 2. The PS3 and PS4 run completely different hardware architecture and system OS.

the themes and the folders/organization stuff is welcome, but I'm starting to think that the suspend/resume feature is never coming.

Any youtube details?
Just this.

The update will also add highly requested broadcast and video share features, including both uploading you game play footage and dedicated app support for YouTube, which we mentioned on stage at E3. Finally, What’s New will get enhanced real-time activity through friend-of-friend suggestions, allowing instant access to friends’ and recently played games’ broadcasts, and a real name search function will also be added. More features to come when v2.00 is made available this fall, and we will have more to announce in the coming months..

It's seems that isn't going to be this time that we will get Option Files support. I was intending to buy PES 2015 in hope that OF support would become available. So Fifa 15 this year.

How is it any different / better than just "buying" (but not downloading) the titles?

It isn't haha, but I suppose some people think the transaction isn't complete until the download starts.

It's much easier just to "purchase" them on the browser store, that way you can get the PS3 and Vita titles into your library at the same time.

Nice workaround the music player thing, and I dont mind using USB

Thank GOD for themes and colours, but please, we shouldn't have to wait another year for:

-folders
-pause downloads
-friend notifications/friend grouping
-improved UI functionality (one press invites, smaller/minimal in-game XMB that doesn't take up the whole screen!)
-Suspend/Resume

MS is just trouncing them on this end

Well, it's not the "blow it up and start over every two years, in a good way" type of update the 360 had, but it's something I guess. I expect iterations of 2.XX through 4.XX by next spring.

MUSIC WOOOO.
Give me DLNA and Suspend/Resume and I'll stop complaining.
Edit: Uggghh I can't save it to the system? Guess I need a bigger USB.

USB music player is hardly custom soundtracks, unless I missed something.

it says you can play music while gaming right here. unless "custom soundtracks" are something completely different?

USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.

It's decent but I was expecting a little more from this update in all honesty.

Using USB for music playback just seems bizarre when so many people want DLNA and even more so since the PS3 can already do it.

Not being able to pause and/or queue downloads either really sucks for someone like me with a dire download speed as well.

- Yes USB hubs work with PS4, I use one to charge the controller and Pulse Elite headphones at the same time while the wireless dongle for the headphones is plugged in.

- Yes you can charge your controllers and any peripheral off a different USB port if you have a computer nearby.
