PS4 System Software Preview – USB Music Player, New Home Screen Colors, More

Nice update but where's

Saving music and videos the HDD
Suspend resume

I have tons of videos and music on my PS3 and would like to build up a library on PS4.

Also, they say anything about changing the background color to black? It's not listed.

I thought recent versions of the PS4 browser had problems with that. No?

What kind of settings do you use for transcoding, etc.?

I only set mine up last week and it's working as I type. I use whatever the default settings with the direct link to my PC, web login also works.

Videos that he/ you legally own? I ask because I literally ask them to everyone I hear complain about DLNA and no one has yet to respond that they actually own the content they are streaming.

Well for me, it's primarily DVD rips that I own, along with audio CD's that I also own. For content I don't own, I have the following subscriptions:

Netflix
Amazon Instant Video
NowTV
Wuaki (they're shutting down their subscription service this month though... which sucks because I got in on the £2.99 a month early adopter deal)
Cruncyroll
Xbox Music

If it turns out something I want to watch isn't available on any of these services, I tend to get rent them off Xbox Video.

Not that any of this should matter really, as we shouldn't have to justify why we'd like standard features on our devices.

The question is why didn't they allow pairing bluetooth headsets like the ps3 did when there seems to be enough bandwidth to do it through the controller anyhow. Maybe there is some kind of security concern that I am unaware of but it seems to me 3.0 or 4.0 doesn't add much for them.

its brand new OS, so probably no drivers.

As to list, keep in mind this is to the addition of other 2.0 features they announced - Share Play which sounds awesome, plus youtube app and uploading to youtube.

Share Play beats anything else on the list easily...

I consider "custom soundtracks" to mean muting the in-game music and overlaying your own music, but keeping the sound effects in tact.

Unless specified otherwise, "play [your] own music in the background while playing a game" could function in a number of ways. Maybe they mute just the game music. Maybe they mute the whole game. Maybe they don't bother muting anything.

I really do hope that it's the "custom soundtrack" feature I truly desire, but I can only hope for the best and expect the worst. It's my nature. :(

it sounds very basic in the description. we'll probably have to go in and mute the in-game music.
or not in Destiny's case

However it works, it will likely do the same thing that Music Unlimited does with its player seeing as it is mentioned as not being available when using the USB Music Player. So the question I have is how does Music Unlimited work, does it mute just game music or just play over the top of it?

Well yeah I do a heavy amount of traveling and A LOT of those files are stored on my Nas and every time some friends or family come over we have a "media party".
Older DVDs are my ripped ones qhich I have stored for random movie nights.
The music is straight from CDs and I want to listen to them via my home cinema system.

Like synth above me also said, for content I do not own I currently have a subscriotion for incl. Netflix, Music Unlimited, Viaplay(Scandinavian 'netflix' with a license for nhl gamecenter)

Idk where else to post this but if I was to buy a used PS4 for a good price, would I be able to buy a warranty or something for it from somewhere else?
If it breaks any time after I buy it, would I be fucked?

Until someone actually uses Music Unlimited, we won't have any way of knowing.

I've just never seen the big need for DLNA. The only people who I've ever known to be big into streaming media were huge on downloading pirating stuff.

It's cool to know there are actually people who use it legitimately. I just wonder who is in the minority, you guys or the pirates.
I think we both know which category is the vast majority.

That doesn't mean Sony shouldn't have the functionality it's last generation console and current competition have.

Talk to better people? That's kind of a broad brush, the same kind that people use in the custom firmware threads.

I buy CDs so I can rip them to FLAC and then stream that to wherever in my house I'm listening. Or I put the file onto my Sansa. If I could use the background music feature on my PS4 using my streaming media, I'd not have to bother with a USB drive. As it is I'll have to use mp3s, anyway.

I usually don't rip my DVDs and Blu-rays though because it's not worth the storage required and I don't do it s frequently.

Of course I won't know til I find out more/actually try it, but on the surface using the library to find content sounds worse than what we have. It'll be full of uninstalled games I'm done with, old betas/demos, games that I don't own but grabbed limited-time free DLC for "just in case", and in some cases multiple different language versions of the same game, only one of which is actually installed (I'm looking at you Diablo).

I really hope there's a way to order and hide stuff arbitrarily within the library. But I'm fearful there might not be since Library is actually the console's download list.

Did you not see the February PS4 reveal? The OS looked like it was going to slaughter everything a console had ever seen. Now we're just hoping to get our PS3 and 360 shit back.

Yeah, I remember Sony having some cool features to announce at the event as part of their OS plans, but what was so great compared to what Microsoft showed after that, apart from a few network related stuff, like streaming or game sharing?

As I said, if someone actually thought for a second that Sony (or Nintendo for that matter) could challenge Microsoft in the OS department, they must have not been thinking straight. They never did, they don't and they most likely never will.

It does sound worse. Hopefully the library is improved to the point where its not a hassle.

For my uses (games) I still prefer the PS4 OS. Its quick and to the point - its just missing features. I prefer the scrolly bar of recent games and apps to the Xbox pins, and between the option of keeping the DLNA player snapped at all times like the Xbox or the PS4's coming USB background music, I prefer the USB method.

Right now I still think the PS4 has the best setup for me, but its rapidly losing ground to the Xbox's blistering pace of updates.

it plays over top. 30day trial so I didn't pay for that garbage

- No DLNA
- No Suspend / Resume
- No Who Logged In notifications
- No PS1 / PS2 emulation
- No support for BD remote controllers (so can't control w/ harmony remote for blu ray playback)

I love the PS4 OS but Sony is dropping the ball. Fire the guys in Japan and create an OS dev group here in NA or EU. The guys in Japan are really bad at this.

It really bugs me that I can't just put a cool desktop image on a USB stick and use it as my PS4 background.

I don't want to pay for the privilege of purchasing what someone else thinks looks nice (themes), I want to put a picture I like on my console.

Apparently it's not all folks:

Why be so secretive about the feature set? It's not more exciting to be secretive. It's just frustrating.

Yes, I know this. I was just explaining to him that "background music" is not the same as custom soundtracks.

I wish more games would have it. Unfortunately, it's never been a common feature.

Yeah, Sony sucks at this. Coming from 360 and Steam, it's amazing how much better Microsoft and Valve are when it comes to updates and adding new features. I know both have the advantage being software companies and all, but come on.

Sony has to develop those features from scratch whereas MS can count on windows kernel foundation to get them rapidly. Add to this that the Xbox OS team is probably way bigger than Playstation's with less platforms to support...

So instead of being able to choose themes and add wallpapers they are letting us only choose the background color?? 😅😅😅
Please...

I want to know if there will be a 'follow' button added to Twitch so that people who are watching on their PS4 consoles can start following my channel.

That's insane. I'm amazed that Sony still hasn't copied features of the original XBox like integrated soundtrack replacement.

Maybe Microsoft still has the patent on that or something. I have no idea what kind of deal Sony and MS do or don't have on patent licensing between the two of them for things like that.

I hope this is just a pretty basic first attempt at incorporating proper custom soundtracks. I shouldn't have to plug in a pen drive just to listen to music. ps3 didn't have custom sountracks (barring some exceptions like gt5 and bad company 2,for example) and yet, you could store music, images and videos on the hdd.

I have one port alteady assigned to my astros, the other is usually the recharge cable, since ds4 has such a short battery, so this solution isn't ideal. and how will it work? will it automatically mute in game music? will it mute everything or just overlay it?

will i be able to open up Nuclear on the iDroid while playing ground zeroes? can i add other songs to WD's playlist,in game?
cause that shit would be dope, but I'm keeping my expectations in check.

For those asking, Music Unlimited works nicely, and allows you play music in the background (including games).

I'm sure MP3 playback will work the same way.

Sorry for the huge screen shot

Yeah, it's a pretty good music player at this point. At PS4 launch it was rough.

I guess just to be flexible? Not including things they aren't 100% sure will make it might allow them to push back features that end up causing issues or take too long.

That'd be the only logical thing I can think of - doing it thinking it drums up interest to tease features over time doesn't make any sense to me.

Except if you have in game music still turned on it all plays at the same time as one big mess. At least it did in MLB, so I had to turn off the in game music(thank god!) and it wasn't half bad using MU.

MU plays on top of the game and it has it's own volume slider independent from the games music sliders.

Does it replace the game's music or play over the top and lower the games music like on Vita?

I do wonder about a few things...I wonder who at Sony owns a 360 and has seen the beautiful way in which, if you're playing a game that has music, and you play your custom music, the 360 will fade out/in certain game music for your custom music...or do we have to worry about overlapping music lol...? (Pretty much what KalBalboa asked) Please Sony...it seems simple but I'm definitely no software engineer. This was such a beautiful feature of the 360 when it came to custom music.

Giant difference between today's version against the one I had on release - out of a 100 tries to login only 5 would go through. And if you got a Sony phone/tablet like me - z2 and z2 tablet - then the Walkman app is probably the best reason to buy a Xperia phone, such a joy to use that app.

It's not that what Sony showed before looked better than what MS showed after. It's that it looked like it'd be comparable. I liked that MS had the snap multitasking, but it didn't seem like other than that (and the TV stuff) there would be much of a difference.

Now I have the machine, and I can't even pause downloads or get notified of my friends coming online... let alone resume games from standby... and this is almost a year in. It's not quite what I was expecting.
