Yeah just give up on that dream, bro. If they can't give us friend notifications a year into the console's life I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for something like ID changes.

I just had one of those moments where you forget it's been almost a year since the PS4 launch, and reading your post here my mind went, "holy shit, it's been a year sine launch and they don't have friends notifications working".

It's one of those things that's just amazing when you really think about it. Rather surprising these deficiencies don't get more attention.

Was going to pick a new USB stick up for this. Well that and the fact that the one I have is ancient.

Any restrictions I should know about when shopping around or will any USB drive work?


If PSN works and the update rolls out smoothly. Otherwise it'll just be the next clusterfuck.

Any USB will work, but just make sure it's not too large near the base where it connects. Otherwise it might not be able to fit since they are recessed on the PS4.

The problem with filters as opposed to folders is that if Sony don't include the same filter as the folder you'd like to make, then it's not as good. So, will there be a filter for 'Sports games' for example, for people who like to sort that way.

The second problem is that if we can't tag the games ourselves (and yes, tagging would be an optimal solution) then Sony might not judge a game to be in the same genre or filter as we would. Maybe you bought Destiny digital and want it in your 'Digital folder' but under Sony's filter it's a 'Retail' game. You just don't have the control over your content that you would with folders. I also like to have a folder I use specifically to hide content I might not use for months at a time but don't want to delete. Filtering doesn't help that either.

Not only that, but the current library display of rows of 3 tiles is super lame and needs improving. I need to see more games on the screen at once than that. We also need the ability to remove games from the library, specifically demos. It makes no sense to have the demo of a game you went on and bought sitting in your library next to the tile for the full game.

I would like the pause function but could not care less about being notified when people on my friends list log in. Especially when I have about 200 people on that list..

I have zero desire to purchase XBone without Media Extender. Leaves me in the same position where I have a 360 still sitting under my TV.

I'm actually glad Sony hasn't added folders or friend notifications yet — because I can't believe they aren't aware of the need for them so it gives me hope they're trying to do them right instead of just doing the basics.

What I'd like to see is a tagging mechanism for games and friends. Apply tags like #favorite or #rpg and then be able to filter either games or friends lists by tags. I'd want to be able to control notifications based on tags, too, like who I get notifications about while watching movies vs. playing games (or even a specific game so I can say "these are my DriveClub friends"), and allow me to never see notifications for people I haven't tagged.

The inability to pause or prioritize downloads is a complete mystery.

considering the mountain of other missing features, either already announced by Sony and MIA or implemented by their competitors (or previous products) I would agree with you.

I still can't believe that they haven't even mentioned when they're hoping to roll out this patch, it may not be until 2015 at this point, which would be crazy.

I find it hard to seriously believe that some people think not having the option to see notifications is just fine.

It's not real life. Why should you have to check your friends list to see if your friend has signed in yet or not? This isn't even a new menu option or type of technology.

The biggest issue i have with Sony coming from the Xbox 360 is why the fuck don't my notifications go away on their own for invites. WTF Sony. I have invites from 4 months ago....

If I am already in the game and wondering where my friend who should play with me is, it´s absolut frustrating not to get the message when he signs into PSN.

err...no. this is one of the most annoying things that the ps4 lacks. they have notifications already for when your friend joins someone else's party but they don't have notifications when your friend actually signs on? so dumb...

its about being in a game already and not having to continually go to the dashboard to see if your friends are online.

if their worry is due to the huge amount of friends you can now have...they should implement something similar to the follow system like on the xbone...or limit notifications to a smaller "favorites" list you can specify.

And then Joe comes online a minute just after you checked your friendslist. What are you going to do? Go back the XMB, and wait till the friendlist loads, every minute just in case Joe comes online?

Friend notification are not necessary, but they do make it one hell of a lot easier.

And to directly counter the people saying "but I've got 200+ friends on my list" Sony could use a similar approach as Microsoft uses by allowing the user to tag friends of which they want notifications.

I agree, but that's because they will never put in some of the things that created vulnerabilities, like Linux dual boot and USB openness. We already see it in that universal usb hardware such as steering wheels need actual chips to work now, rather than being plug and play.

I mean, just simply loading up your ps4 with music and video files and playing them. Or streaming from a PC. Or CD playback. Or ps1 emulation. The ps3 had all that at launch. Should be no excuse for the ps4 to not have all this ready on day one, or at least close to launch.

I mean, the ps3 launched with some crappy web store. I remember it. It took a year before it became an app. Imagine if the ps4 also launched with a web store and no proper application. There would be no reasonable excuse for that right? There is no reason to go backwards.

Sony definitely needs to add friend notifications, but maybe they are rethinking how notifications are handled. Like different type of notifications. Like when a friend is broadcasting, or begins playing a game u are already playing. Just a notification seems so simple that it should've been available at launch. This is what I'm speculating that they are doing. Any other "friends notification" ideas u guys and gals can think of?

Nice things coming in this update, I still rate my ps4 ui head and shoulders above my xbone ui any day, simplicity is better, plus the ps4 has its focus on games. I have a flagship samsung tv for streaming.

I still use my Xbox to watch Netflix or Amazon, but that's somewhat because of voice controls (iffy) but mostly because I can appear offline. Its quality me-time that wouldn't be the case on the PS4.
